You should choose the best answer among A, B, C and D.Passage 1Like many other small boys, I was fascinated by cars, not least because my oldest brother was a bit of a car guy and subscribed to cool magazines like Car and Driver and Motor Trend. Every so often, one of those magazines would run a article on the “Car of the Future.” They featured unconventional styling and things like small nuclear reactors as power sources. Yet, frankly, my car doesnt do anything that my brothers Studebaker didnt do. It goes, it stops, it burns gasoline, it plays music. I still have to steer it, and it still runs into things if I dont steer it carefully. But guess what? All of these things are subject to change in the not-so-distant future. It will still go and stop, but it may not burn gasoline, I may not have to steer it, and it may be a lot better at not running into things.Airbags arent the be-all and end-all in safety. In fact, considering the recent news about people occasionally being killed by their airbags in low-speed collisions(碰撞), they obviously still need some development. But they arent going away, and in fact, you can expect to see cars appearing with additional, side-impact airbags, something some European car manufacturers already offer.Better than systems to minimize injury in the event of an accident, however, are systems that minimize the likelihood of an accident happening in the first place. Future cars may be able to eliminate many of the major causes of accidents. Including drunk-driving, tailgating and sleepiness. Cars could be equipped with sensors that can detect alcohol in a drivers system and prevent the car from being started, for example. Many accidents are caused by people following the car in front too closely. As early as next year, youll be able to buy cars with radar-equipped control systems. If the radar determines youre closing too quickly with the car in front, it will ease up on the throttle. For city streets, expect other radar devices that will give advance warning that the car in front of you has slowed abruptly(突然地) and you should step on the brakes-or that may even brake for you. Will cars eventually be able to drive themselves? Theres no reason to think it wont be technically possible, and Mercedes is working on a system that can brake, accelerate and steer a vehicle down a highway on its won. Nobody really expects people to give up all control to their cars, but such systems could be used as failsafe systems to keep cars on the road and bring them safely to a stop even if the driver suddenly became disabled.21. The author was fascinated by cars because_.A. other small boys liked to own a car of their own, too.B. he read exotic things about cars in his brothers magazines.C. his oldest brother loved to take him to places in his car.D. he subscribed to cool car magazines.22. By saying “my car doesnt do anything that my brothers Studebaker didnt do”, the author means that_.A. my car is far better than my brothers was.B. my car is not as good as my brothers was.C. not much has changed in the performance of cars so far.D. much improvement has been made in the design of cars recently.23. Which of the following statements is true of airbags?A. They are in need of further improvement.B. They are going to disappear gradually.C. They kill people instead of protecting them in low-speed collisions.D. They are a standard feature of European cars.24. What will future cars do if the sensors detect alcohol in the drivers system?A. They will give a warning in advance.B. They will brake automatically.C. They will ease up on the throttle.D. They will not start.25. Which of the following statements is true according the last paragraph?A. People will give up all control to their cars.B. Cars will be able to drive themselves.C. Not cars will ever break down on the roads.D. Cars will all be equipped with failsafe systems.Passage 2Kidnappers are rarely interested in animals, but they recently took considerable interest in Mrs. Eleanor Ramsays cat. Mrs. Ramsay, a very wealthy old lady, has shared a flat with her cat, Rastus, for a great many years. Rastus leads an orderly life. He usually takes a short walk in the evenings and is always home by seven oclock. One evening, however, he failed to arrive. Mrs. Ramsay got very worried. She looked everywhere for him but could not find him.Three days after Rastus disappearence, Mrs. Ramsay received an anonymous letter. The writer stated that Rastus was in safe hands and would be returned immediately if Mrs. Ramsay paid a ransom of 1000 pounds. Mrs. Ramsay was instructed to place the money in a cardboard box and to leave it outside her door. At first, she decided to go to the police, but fearing that she would never see Rastus again-the letter had made that quite clear-she changed her mind. She drew 1000 pounds from her bank and followed kidnappers instructions. The next morning, the box had disappeared but Mrs. Ramsay was sure that the kidnapper would keep his word. Sure enough, Rastus arrived punctually at 7:00 that evening. He looked very well, though he was rather thirsty, for he drank half a bottle of milk. The police were astounded. In their wild search for fulfillment, theyve gotten themselves into situations in which they feel like theyre on a treadmill(踏车) and cant get off.Among many couples, both husband and wife work because they claim they have make ends meet. Granted, in this society with its wide difference of income, it often takes two breadwinners in a family to survive. But in other cases, what people are really saying is that they have to pay for the luxuries to which theyve grown accustomed-the extravagant vacations, boats, new cars, brand-name clothes, expensive houses, costly memberships in the golf club, the motor homes. But as Paul reminds us in the Bible, we didnt bring anything into this world, and we wont take anything with us when we leave. People who want to be rich fall into all sorts of traps and temptations. They are caught by foolish and harmful desires that drag them down. Many of us pride ourselves on never having an idle moment. Yet when there is no time for quiet, there is no time for the soul to grow. The man who walks through the countryside sees much more than the one who runs. The British philosopher Bertrand Russell said once, “A certain power of enduring boredom is essential to a happy life.” He pointed out that the lives of most great men have not been exciting except at rare moments. Nor did the great men of the past travel widely. Kant, the famous 18th century German philosopher, never got more than ten miles from his home in Konigsberg in Prussia. Darwin, after going around the world, spent the rest of his life in his own house. Socrates would mainly just take a walk in the afternoon and meet a few friends along the way. Jesus, accordingto the Bible, never left the confines of tiny Palestine.A happy life, said Russell, must be to great extent a quiet life “for it is only in an atmosphere of quiet that true joy can live.”31.
