(A)It is hard to predict how science is going to turn out, and if it is really good science it is impossible to predict. You either have science or you dont , and if you have it you are obliged to accept the surprising and disturbing pieces of information, along with the neat and promptly useful bits. The only solid piece of scientific truth about which I feel totally confident is that we are profoundly ignorant about nature. It is not so bad being ignorant if you are totally ignorant, the hard thing is knowing in some detail the reality of ignorance, the worst spots and here and there the not so bad spots, but no true light at the end of the tunnel nor even any tunnels that can yet be trusted. There are probably no question we can think up that can be answered, sooner or later. Within our limits we should be able to work our way through to all our answers, if we keep at it long enough , and pay attention. What is the authors attitude towards science?A) He is depressed due to the ignorance to the scienceB) He is doubtful due to the difficulty in the scientific studyC) He is confident though he is aware of enormous difficulties in scientific researchD) He is puzzled that science can not be predicted (B)Sugar is so much a part of our modern life that we only really think about it when, for some reason, we can not obtain it. Until quite recently it was considered as a medicine and as a luxury for the very rich only. Sugar is, then, very important to our civilization. But what exactly it is? But there are in fact many types of sugar, and the chemist recognizes hundreds of different varieties, coming from a different source. About 90% of the sugar produced as food. Only 10% is used in industry for purposes other than food production. In the future these potential uses will certainly be developed more then at present and in the past. There are many reasons why we should increase the production of sugar. So three acres of land growing wheat and potatoes give only slightly more energy than one acre of sugar. What is the main idea of the article?A) What sugar isB) Sugar in different agesC) The advantages of sugarD) The presence and future of the sugar (C)Hardly a week goes by without some advance in technology that would have seemed incredible 50 years ago. Another change will make thousands, of not millions, redundant. (剩余劳动力)Even people in traditional professions, where expert knowledge has been the key are unlikely to escape from the new technology. Children will still go to school until another place is created where they can make friends and develop social skills. What can we do to avoid the threat of unemployment? Strangely enough, there will still be jobs like rubbish collection, cleaning and so on as they are tough to program tasks which are largely unpredictable. What is the best title of the article?A) The threat of unemploymentB) Technology and unemploymentC) How to avoid the unemploymentD) Some shortcomings of the technology (D)Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together, they will learn to live together. Not only was there the tragic incident involving the murder of athletes, but the games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused by minor national contests. One country received its second place medals with visible indignation after the hockey final. The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension of the team for at least three years. The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable end to their contest. The game ended in disturbance. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals. Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. But in present organization of the Olympic there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism. What conclusion can we draw from the article?A) The organization of the Olympic Games must be improvedB) Athletes should compete as individual in the GamesC) Sport should be played competitively rather than for the lover of a gameD) International contests are not liable for the Spirit of Olympic Games (E)When a new movement in Art attains a certain fashion, it is advisable to find out what it advocates are aiming at, for, however far-fetched and unreasonable their tenants may seem today, it is possible that in years to come they may be regarded as normal. However, for whatever the futurist(未来派) poetry may beit can hardly be classed as literature. This, in brief, what the futurist says: for a century, past conditions of life have been continually speeding up, till now we live in a world of noise and violence and speed. Instead of describing sounds we must make up words that imitate them; we must use many sizes of type and different colored inks on the same page, and shorten or lengthen words at will. Certainly, their descriptions of battle are vividly confusing. “Pluff! Pluff! A hundred and eighty-five kilograms”, which is the theme of futurist poetry. This, though it fulfills the laws and requirements of futurist poetry, can hardly be classed as literature. The whole question is really this: “Have we essentially change?”The title of the article could be :A) How new movement influences literatureB) How to evaluate futurist poetryC) What futurist poetry means.D) Where futurist poetry will lead literature to? (F)Communications technologies are far from equal when it comes to conveying the truth. The fact that emails are automatically recorded and can come back to haunt you appears to be the key to the finding that fewest people tell lies by e-mail.Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, asked 30 students to keep a communications diary for a week. He found that lies make up 14 percent of emails, 21 percent of instant messages, 27 percent of face-to-face interactions and a astonishing 37 percent of phone calls. His results, to be presented at the conference on human computer interaction in Vienna, have surprised psychologist. Other expected people to lie more in face-to-face exchanges because we are most practiced at that form of communication. But Hancock says it is also crucial whether a conversation is being recorded and could be recorded, and whether it occurs in real time. This is why fewer lies appear in email than on the phone. People are also more likely to lie in real time than if they have time to think of a response, says Hancock. He found many lies are spontaneous responses to an unexpected demand, such as: “Do you like my dress?” Hancock hopes his research will help companies work out the best ways for their employees to communicate. But given his results, work assessment, where honesty is priority, might be best done using e-mail. What does the article mainly talk about?A) Peoples honesty levels vary in different media communicationB) The consequences of telling lies by media communicationC) Peoples preference of choosing proper media communicationD) Honest changes in various media communication and relevant causes13a教育试题
