They tried different ways as they could think out. They chose a quiet place, dug a deep hole and buried(埋藏) the treasure in it. Then they made a map of where the treasure was or wrote down other clues(线索)that would help them or someone else to find it again. In Britain a few years ago, a writer wrote about some treasure that he had buried. He put clues in the story to help readers find it. Thousands of people hunted for the treasure. They dug holes all over Britain, hoping to find it. One of the most popular adventure stories ever written is Robert Louis Stephensons “Treasure Island”, an exciting story about a young boy, Jim Hawkins, who is captured by pirates(海盗) and later finds some buried treasure. Then there is a true story about a man who had to travel overseas for a year. He did not trust banks, so he buried his life savings in a park. Then he went away. On his return, he went straight to the park. But the park was no longer there. In its place there was a huge building. And then there was a woman who buried her savings, all in bank notes, in a waterproof(防水的)bag. When she dug it up years later, there was nothing left. Worms and insects had eaten the bag and everything in it. And of course, these are stories about people who bury things and either forget where they have buried them or lose the map. Although it is true that people sometimes lose their money because a bank fails, banks are still the safest place to keep our savings and treasures. 1.People who bury treasure usually .()A.try to keep others from taking itB.have a little moneyC.want to live in a quiet placeD.expect to leave it to others2.What could help them or someone else to find it again?()A.Making a map of the place and writing down some clues.B.Digging another hole and writing some clues.C.Coloring the place and making the map.D.Asking someone else and numbering the place.3.The man who buried his money in a park .()A.thought his money was safer there than in a bankB.stayed away longer than he expectedC.got his life savings back againD.traveled on the sea for a year4.From these stories we can learn that .()A.we cannot trust banksB.we should not trust anyoneC.it may not safe to bury D.insects can keep anything valuable Passage 2At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper. It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of Internet-connected computers, although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the printers start working overtime. “I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down,” says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organization.Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet the greater demand for printers.Does all this mean environmental concerns have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away. “I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling,” said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.5.The growing demand for paper in recent years is largely due to .()A.the increased use of the InternetB.the opening up of new marketsC.the printing of high-quality copiesD.the rapid development of small businesses6.Environmentalists believe one possible way of dealing with the paper situation is . ()A.to encourage printing more quality documentsB.to find new materials for making paper C.to develop new printers using recycled paperD.to plant more fast-growing trees7.Hewlett-Packard Co. has decided to develop new technologies because . ()A.people are concerned about the environmentB.printers in many offices are working overtimeC.small companies need more hard copiesD.they see a growing market for printers8.What would be the best title for the text? ()A.Computers and PrintersB.E-mail and the Business WorldC.Internet Revolution and EnvironmentD.Modern Technology and New Markets【参考答案】. Once there was a very helpful and kind-hearted man. 根据前半句 the man saw a wallet, 和后半句 But then he found it was可知他从地上捡起了钱包。 根据下文“Please give it back to me, and its my sons tuition(学费)”可知女人问的是钱在哪。 上文妇人说钱是她儿子的学费,下文说so he handed over all his money,推断出她应该是非常伤心。 He wasnt the thief that day, but having heard about your situation he 11 you all his money.” She thought that he might rob her, 可知后面有人跟着她。 He looked very weak这样的状况让她感到非常惊讶。 前半句sometimes it shocks you和后半句sometimes it may also surprise you. 故应用and。 1.A2.A3.A细节理解题。 He did not trust banks, so he buried his life savings in a park可知A项正确。 And of course, these are stories about people who bury things and either forget where they have buried them or lose the map. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.与本题选项中B项to find new materials for making paper. 题干中HP Company是找到答案的线索,在第三段中有该公司 develop new technologies 的原因在于:enable people to print even more。 As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet the greater demand for printers.
