He was most wellknown for his brushwork and the way in which he connected with the human soul. His life, however, was not happy. He was born on July 15, 1606 in Leiden, the Netherlands. His father wanted him to have a real, learned profession but Rembrandt left the University of Leiden after being bored. He began studying art under a local teacher but soon left and studied in Amsterdam where he mastered all his lessons in six months! At the age of 22, he moved back to Leiden and began to get his own students. One of his students was the famous artist Gerrit Dou. In 1631 he returned to Amsterdam where he became the most popular portrait painter in Holland. Rembrandt met Saskia and married her in 1634. She was a cousin of a very successful art dealer and she helped him to meet wealthy people who missioned(委任制作)many paintings from him. He used her as a model in many of his paintings.Rembrandts private life, however, was very unfortunate. He had four children with Saskia but only one, Titus, survived. Saskia died in 1642 at the age of only 30. In 1649, his housekeeper became his second wife and was also a model for many of his paintings. Even though Rembrandt was very successful as an artist, art dealer and teacher, he lived in a careless way and had to declare bankruptcy(破产)in 1656. He even had to sell his whole art collection and his house to pay off his debts. His unfortunate life, however, didnt affect his art. He painted many great paintings during that time. His new love, Hendrickje, died in 1663 and his 27yearold son, Titus, died in 1668. Eleven months later, on October 4, 1669, Rembrandt died in Amsterdam. He produced more than 600 paintings and over 2,000 drawings! 1Which of the following is the reason that made his business fail?AAs an extraordinary Dutch painter, he knew nothing about business.BHe spent most of his time on art, leaving no time to care his business.CAll his children but Titus died, which made him very sad.DLike other famous artists, he was thoughtless. 由第四段中的“.he lived in a careless way and had to declare bankruptcy(破产)in 1656.” 2From the passage we learn that Rembrandt_.Agraduated from the University of LeidenBbegan his teaching career in 1628Cmarried Saskia when he was 22 years oldDwas good at drawing animals and flowers答案:B细节理解题。根据第二段的“He was born on July 15, 1606.”和第三段的“At the age of 22, he.get his own students”可推算出他是在1628年开始他的教学生涯的。 3How many members of Rembrandts family died before him, not including his parents?AFour.BFive.CSix.DSeven. 4Whats the best title for this passage?AA brief biography of RembrandtBA great Dutch painterCThe greatest painter in the worldDRembrandts unhappy family答案:A主旨大意题。 BThe greatest artistic creative geniuses Ive ever seen, have been those who can turn garbage into art. Not just gluing together junk, but really making waste into something unique, cool, and well, something youd put into your home for instance. Theres something to be said about recycling of those items we monly throw away. The ability to take trash and garbage and turn it into art, or something intriguing that is fascinating to look at is a skill all of its own. I have often said that the tree geniuses of our time, that is to say the creative genius artists of our era are those who can do this, create art that can mand a high price tag from junk. Over the years while traveling through the United States I had stopped into museums in many parts of the country. Some of the best art Ive ever seen in my life has e from garbage, trash, or junk that has been reworked and recycled into something spectacular. Best of all the artists dont spend much on material costs, therefore it is mostly profitable. In fact they are using their minds to do a lot with very little. Just think if we all used our minds to do this, how little we might actually throw away, and how more efficiently we could run our factories, production, and even households. After all, anything that is not used is waste, and it is thrown away. It ends up in a landfill, or a dump somewhere, and eventually it decays in the soil, causing perhaps ground water pollution. However, if we can rework these items for a couple of more rounds, and waste less, then we are providing efficiency for our civilization, and thats a good thing. Any artist who can do this is not only one caring the environment, but he is also one with humanity, and using his brain power and creative genius to make us all better. 5What would be the best title for the passage?A.
