These stories are often considered as folk tales (民间传说)rather than real experiences. However, the large number of sightings and the use of modern technology are changing this attitude, making us wonder if those men were telling real experiences. The following are some of the most well-known cases about sea monsters living in the oceans. On August 6, 1848, in the Atlantic Ocean, seven men reported that they saw a creature about 60 feet long. The creatures body was dark brown in color except for its white throat area. The creature was swimming at a speed of 15 miles per hour with its head above the water. In 1961, Mrs. Stoudt and her sister were walking with their children along a strait in Washington D.C. when they saw something like a tree branch in the water. As the object moved closer to them, they saw a creature, which had a snake-like head and 3 humps(峰). They said it looked like some sort of dinosaur. Then it moved even closer to them. Its frightening look made one of Mrs. Stoudts children cry. On December 12, 1964, French photographer Robert Serrec was having a holiday in Queensland, Australia. He was out off the coast in small boats with his family and friends. Suddenly, they noticed a creature, about 75-80 feet long. They described it as a tadpole-like(像蝌蚪的)creature with a snake-like head. They took pictures of the creature before it swam off. 56. Which of the following statements about the 1848 sea monster is NOT true?A. It was about sixty feet long. B. It kept its head above the water when it swam.C. Its whole body was dark brown. D. It was found in the Atlantic Ocean.57. It can be inferred from the passage that _.A. the 1848 sea monster swam faster than the 1961 and the 1964 sea monstersB. the three sea monsters mentioned in the passage each had a snake-like head C. the 1964 sea monster was longer than the 1848 sea monsterD. Robert Serrec went to Australia in order to see a sea monster58. The writers purpose in writing the passage is _.A. to show people the danger of traveling by sea B. to tell us that sea monster stories might be trueC. to explain why people are afraid of sea monstersD. to tell people where they can find sea monsters BHave you ever gone to Yellowstone National Park? Actually, this only amounts to a small percentage of the total 1.6 billion tons of oil shipped around the world each year. However, this spilled oil has terrible effects on ocean life, including the coastlines where the off washes up onto shore. Some of the largest spills in history were caused by oil tankers running into each other or by an oil tanker sailing into shallow water and hitting the bottom of the ocean. After these spills, officials try to discover who or what was at fault to help prevent similar accidents in the future. One of the worst oil spills in history occurred along the Alaskan coastline in 1989. In this accident, 42,000 tons of oil spilled from a tanker which resulted in terrible damage to this sensitive natural area. In this spill, the tankers captain, who was tired from overwork and drinking alcohol, had gone to take a rest. He gave control of the ship to the third mate. The third mate was unfamiliar with the path the ship took, and he ran the ship onto Blighe Reef. Blighe Reef is a natural underwater rock wall near the Alaskan coast. Damaged by the reef, the ship leaked oil out into the ocean. More than 1,600 kilometers of coastline were affected by the oil spill. Some scientists who studied nature in the area guessed that 580,000 birds and 5,500 otters died when the oil from the spill covered their skin. As well, smaller shellfish and other sea creatures were later eaten by seals, whales, and other animals. The most oil ever spilled was actually dumped on purpose as an act of ecological warfare. The term ecological warfare means to fight by doing harm to nature in the area under attack. In 1990, Iraq sent soldiers into Kuwait and set off the Persian Gulf War. As part of the Iraq war plan, 900,000 tons of oil were let out into the Persian Gulf Way Iraq. This oil covered 1,500 square kilometers of water in the Persian Gulf. The oil also damaged 650 kilometers of the coastline of both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. In some places, oil floating on the water was measured to be 43 centimeters thick. Water birds, water plants, and baby fish were all seriously affected by the oil. The long-term effects of this act on the food chain in the area are bound to cause problems tar into the future.67. Which cause of oil spills is described in the second paragraph? A. Dumping B. War C. Accidents D. Throwing about carelessly68. The creatures affected by the oil spill near Alaska were_. Good study habits lead to good grades, and good grades lead to applications for better colleges and universities. This in turn will lead to a great career. To be successful, the first thing you need to do is to take responsibility for your actions. You are the only one who can decide your own important things and how to use your time. Your actions today will decide what will happen tomorrow and even in the near future.Your success rests in your own hands. Do not be influenced by others. Be a leader, not a follower. Do not allow your friends to tell you what is important. Keep friends who lead you towards your goals, not away from them. The most important thing to learn to succeed in the classroom is to make full use of your time outside the classroom. Review your class notes and the proper chapters (章节) in your textbooks. Different people work better at different times. Some students work better in the morning, while some can study better in the afternoon, or at night. Nightly review of your notes is a great idea and will help you understand your lessons to a much greater degree. This review will save time in the long run. If you study in the morning, plan to study your hardest subjects first. If you prepare for your lessons in advance, you will be more relaxed in classes.Set the more important things into your plan, have a to-do list and put the most important project first. Once this is done, move to the second most important project. Crossing off each project as you finish will give you a sense of achievement.Choose a study place where you can be comfortable and pay attention to other things that help to improve your productivity (效率). For example, can you study well with soft music in the background?Always challenge yourself. Do not be satisfied with your own school textbooks. Ask questions and do your own research.
