Unit 4 Astronomy- the science of the stars课时作业Learning about language. AThe Boy Made It!One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didnt have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed out. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didnt, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could. By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldnt lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could he huddled(蜷缩) in his cave and slept. The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldnt find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved. Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls survival show Man vs Wild. Thats where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode(一期节目) of Man vs Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out. When Grylls heard about Nicholas amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.【文章大意】本文讲的是一个小男孩在暴风雪中迷路,他不畏艰难,利用在电视中学到的野外生存知识逃脱困境的故事。1. Its in the top 15 percent of the driest languages. This fits with our hypothesis (假说). Its perfectly possible that the English language could adopt tones in areas that are now more humid,or as the climate changes,”says Sean Roberts, who works on global differences in geophonetics(地理语音学)The research changes how language evolution is understood, with data drawn from over half the worlds tongues. “Broadly, this suggests another nonconscious way in which humans have adapted to their very different and extremely cruel environments,” says Caleb Everett, the researcher on the project.“Also, there may be some health benefits to certain sound patterns in certain climates, but more research is needed.”Breathing in dry air may cause a speakers voice box to lose too much water, decreasing voice range.“Theres a hypothesis several anthropologists, who study people, society and culture, have put forward that languages in warmer climates such as Kenya tend to have higher rates of mouth opening,” says Everett. “Languages do gain and lose tones, and can do so quite quickly. Ancient dialects of Chinese had no tone, and Korean is currently undergoingtonogenesis (gaining tones),” adds Roberts. At present, its very difficult to say whether very early languages had tones or not.“One of the things well be researching next is whether languages gain or lose tones when entering or leaving dry climates,” says Roberts.“This will involve reconstructing linguistic history using statistical methods. Effectively, this will also involve modelling climate change.”【文章大意】新研究发现气候能够改变人们的说话方式。5What may be Robertss hypothesis?AThe wetter the area is, the simpler the tone is.BThe drier the area is, the fewer tones the language has.CThe warmer the climate becomes, the simpler the tone is.DThe hotter the climate becomes, the more complex the tone is. This fits with our hypothesis. 6According to the research, language evolution shows _. So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spend in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule:1. Think ahead. The moments when I think cooking is a pain are when Im already hungry and theres nothing ready to eat. So think ahead of the coming week. When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials already? _2_ 2. Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread?_3_ It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal.3_4_ This may surprise you, but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work well with your appetite and schedule. The more you learn and the more you try, the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule. Hopefully that gives you a good start._5_ And dont let a busy schedule discourage you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live!ATry new things.BAbility is easily improved.CMake three or four instead.DUnderstand your food better.E. Cooking is a burden for many people.F. Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden.G. A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on.【文章大意】作者就如何在紧张的时间里做一顿好饭给出了一些建议。1解析:B根据第一句中的关键信息.three main reasons.ability, money, and time. Are you making one loaf of bread?(你在做一片面包吗?) 故选A项。
