While his heroic stand against the Nazis is well know, there are still a few facts about the popular politician that might surprise you.His Cigars The classic image of Winston Churchill includes a giant cigar stuck between his lips. Churchill developed his love of cigars as a young man, when he traveled to Cuba. For he rest of his life, he smoked eight or nine cigars every day. However, he almost never took a puff(吸,抽), preferring to chew on the end until it went out, then relight it and start again. To prevent the cigar being soggy (湿软的), Churchill invented the “bellybando”, a strip of brown paper which could be glued around the end. At any given time, Churchill had 3,000 to 4,000 cigars in his house, mostly his favorite Romeo & Juliet brand. On one occasion, the president of Cuba presented Churchill with 2,400 top-quality cigars, although his security team insisted one cigar from each box be sent off and tested for poison. Perhaps the story that best shows his love of cigars occurred during World War II, when he had a special oxygen mask designed so hat he could still smoke his cigar on a high-altitude flight. His Black DogThroughout his life, Churchill probably suffered from depression, which he called his “black dog”. At times, his depression was so severe that he didnt like standing close to a passing train or looking at the ocean from a ship because he feared that he would mit suicide. When he was depressed, Churchill would almost spend a great deal of time in bed and lose his ability to concentrate. However, when not depressed, Churchill was full of energy, usually working and talking until the early hours of the morning. He often described how “all the colors e back into the picture”.4. Why did Churchills security team insist on checking the cigars? A. To test if they were safe for Churchill B. To see if they were of the best quality C. To make sure were Churchills favorite D. To guarantee they were not out of date5. Which of the following best shows Churchills love of cigars?A. He fell in love with cigars at a young age B .He smoked many cigars every dayC. He invented the “bellybando” D. He had an oxygen mask specially designed for smoking6. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean? A. Churchill became energetic again B. Churchill remained depressed C. Churchill drew colorful pictures D. Churchill liked to talk about colors7. What is probably the best title of the passage? A. Achievements of Churchill B. Anecdotes about Churchill C. Personalities of Churchill D. Hobbies of ChurchillCScientists have found living organisms trapped in crystals (晶体) that could be 50,000 years old.The organisms were found in a hot, but beautiful cave system in Naica, Mexico. These ancient life forms can be seen only with a microscope. Penelope Boston, who leads the Astrobiology Institute at NASA, the space agency of the United States, says the ancient microbes were able to live by eating minerals such as iron. She spoke about the discovery recently at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. If the findings are confirmed, they will show how microbes can survive in extreme conditions. Forty different kinds of microbes and some viruses were found in the underground area. The genetic structures of these organisms are 10 percent different from those of their nearest relatives. The caves in Naica are 800 kilometers deep. They were once used for mining lead. Before the miners began working in the caves, the area was separated from the surface and the outside world. Some of the caves are as big as the large religious centers built during Europes Middle Ages. There are crystals covering the walls. The caves are so hot that scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool. The clothing keeps the crystals safe from human germs (病菌) or other damage. Boston said the researchers could only work for about 20 minutes at a time before they had to go to a room that was 38 degrees Celsius to cool down.NASA officials would not let Boston share her findings with scientific experts before last weeks announcement. So scientists could not say much about the findings. But Norine Noonan, a biologist with the University of South Florida, said she believed them. “Why are we surprised?” Noonan asked. “ As a biologist, I would say life on Earth is extremely tough and extremely colorful.”Boston is also studying microbes monly found inside caves in other countries, such as Ukraine and the United States. These microbes appear to be impossible to kill. Boston said they show how difficult life on Earth can be.8. The existence of the ancient microbes relies on _.A. surrounding insects B. eating mineralsC. diverse plants D. absorbing air9. What can we infer about the caves in Naica from the passage?A. The temperature in the caves is quite low.B. The environment in the caves is difficult to adapt to.C. The walls are covered by crystals.D. The caves have been explored since they were formed.10. What is the biologist Norine Noonans attitude towards the findings?A. Neutral. B. Doubtful.C. Positive. D. Indifferent.11. Whats the main idea of the passage?A. Living organisms bring hope to scientific research.B. Caves provide living environment for living organisms.C. Microbes show great power to survive in terrible conditions.D. Scientists Discover 50,000-year-old “super life” in Mexico.D Is beauty something always positive? Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive(主管的) circle, beauty can bee a disadvantage. While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman. Handsome male executives were considered having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success. Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck. All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the manly qualities required. This is true even in politics. “When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently,” says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 college students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them. The results showed that attractive males pletely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.12. In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness _. A. makes women look more honest and capable B. strengthens the manly qualities required C. is of no importance to women D. often enables women to succeed quickly13. Bowmans experiment shows that when it es to politics, attractiveness _. A. affects men and women alike B. has as little effect on men as on women C. is more of a disadvantage to womenD. turns out to be a disadvantage to men 14. According to the last paragraph, peoples views on beauty are _. A. practical B. one-sided C. old-fashioned D. supportive15. The passage is mainly about _. A. the disadvantages of being attractive B. the advantages of being attractive C. equal rights for women D. the importance of appearance第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Four Habits to Help You SucceedWeallwanttosucceed, whetheritisin losingweightorlearningtheguitar.
