While there are plenty of authors who seem to be paid by the word and are only concerned with expanding volume, there are many authors producing fantastic works that are worthy of the word literature. While there were many worthy petitors, here are what we consider to be the great work of the greatest fantasy series of all time.1. The Dark Tower by Stephen KingThe Dark Tower actually shares some similarities with The Wheel of Time. In both series the first four books are the strongest, and you also get the sense with both Robert Jordan and Stephen King that they didnt quite know how to end their creation, which led to a very controversial ending in The Dark Towers case along with some questionable decisions by King like his self-insertion in the story.King has created one of the most iconic fantasy characters of all time in the Gunslinger Roland and the world he creates, with all of its similarities to our reality, is a prosperous one. Its too bad that Stephen King doesnt dabble(涉猎) more in fantasy, because he clearly has a talent for world building. Not to mention everything he writes seems to be phone book sized, which would fit right in with the fantasy genre.2. Harry Potter by J.K. RowlingWhen considering a ranking of the greatest fantasy series of all time, the question of Harry Potter is a tricky one. Theres inevitably opposition when something is as popular as Rowlings work, and add to that the fact that the series is seemingly meant for children and you have a case that naturally inspires a lot of debate. Im not sure I believe Rowling did anything particularly new with Harry Potter, but a work doesnt necessarily have to be innovative for it to be great. Nearly every fantasy series owes a debt to Tolkien for instance, but that doesnt mean Tolkien has written the only work of fantasy that matters. Rowling didnt really e up with anything new, but the connection she made with tens of millions of readers is praiseworthy. People will be reading Harry Potter for decades to e, and Im not sure a better introduction to fantasy could be found.56. What do we know about the two books? A. Kings work The Wheel of Time has a controversial ending. B. People have debate on J.K. Rowlings book because of her innovation. C. King is blessed with a gift for world building. D. Tolkien has a great influence on J.K. Rowling.57. The passage is most probably taken from _. A. a news report B. a book review C. a history book D. a research paperB Scientists are much more likely to produce innovative research when using longterm grants that allow them unusual freedom in the lab, according to a new study cowritten by MIT economists. The work shows that biologists whose funding encourages them to take risks and tolerates initial research failures finally produce about twice as many highly influential papers as some other life scientists whose funding is dependent upon meeting closely defined, short-term research targets. If you want people to branch out in new directions, then its important to provide for their long-term horizons (时间范围),to give them time to experiment and potentially fail, says Pierre Azuay, an associate professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management, and an author of the study. The researcher has to believe that shortterm failure will not be punished. The researchers believe their evidence shows it is possible to manage lab work in a way that increases the chances that scientists will produce breakthrough findings, not just gradual advances within an established pattern. You can make changes, but the details matter, says Azuay. What you want to provide encouragements for is future performance, not performance today. The researchers arrived at their conclusions after paring researchers using two types of funding: HHMI and NIH. The HHMI support lasts five years and is often renewed; the program urges its researchers to take risks. even if it means uncertainty or the chance of failure. The NIH grants last three to five years, have more specific aims, and cease immediately if not renewed. Their findings show that pared to the early-career prize winners with NIH grants, the HHMI-funded scientists produced twice as many papers in the top 5 percent in terms of citations (被引用),and three times as many in the top 1 percent. pared to the NIH-funded scientists, the HHMI group produced about the same quantity of papers in the top 5 percent by citation, but 50 percent more papers in the top 1 percent. 58. What might happen if biologists receive a long-term fund? A.They might not be punished even if their research ends in failure. B.They might produce controversial papers on their research results. C.They might risk their health to carry out some dangerous research. D.They might extend the range of their research for a detailed study. 59. What can we infer from the passage? A.Researches supported by HHMI last much longer than those by NIH. B.Biologists funded by HHMI are more outstanding than those by NIH. C.The HHMI support is partly more effective than that offered by NIH. D.The HHMI programs dont set specific goals as the NIH programs do. 60. By presenting two types of funding, the author intends to tell us how to . A. get proper funding B . encourage big ideas C. allocate special funds D. evaluate life sc1ent1stsCThe majority of the parents we talk to are not eagerly looking to provide their children with a rich, self-directed learning environment. Sadly, most of the parents we talk to are trying to save their children from the traumaa mental state of extreme shock caused by an upsetting experiencewhich is so often associated with schooling (e. g., testing, sleep deprivation, depression, bullying). One of the greatest challenges we face when talking to those parents about Emancipated (解放的) Learning as an alternative to school is that it is often the first time that they have heard of an educational environment that does not rely on using force or threats. Most of them have never been introduced to the concept of self-directed education, or they believe that self-directed education can be achieved by allowing a student to pick a topic they are expected to write a report about. They might have heard of homeschooling, but have never heard of unschooling. Instead of being able to emphasize how we are creating a psychologically safe learning space where young people can have deep and meaningful learning experiences that will allow them to lead remarkable lives, we are left trying to educate them on human psychology, the history of schooling, and the science of learning. Needless to say, a 30-minute conversation covering such deep topics is typically not enough to make parents take meaningful action to improve their childrens learning experiences in the订 current schools, or to move them to alternative schools that better meet their childrens needs. Meanwhile, there are a lot of teachers and administrators who know that something is not working at their schools, but do not know what they can do to improve the situation. They have most likely never been introduced to much of the research that proves that self-directed learning is the best way to deepen learning, promote lifelong learning, and remove much of the trauma associated with forced schooling. It is not their fault, as the organizations they work for and the education schools that they attended go out of their way to ignore these topics, and instead focus on minor reforms while pushing the assumption that young people need to be forced to learn, and that schooling environments are where that happens. In an attempt to spur (促成) the necessary conversations around education that are currently not being had, we will be hosting the Smart Schooling Book Group at the Laura Bush munity Library. We will read one book each month that focuses on education, with an emphasis on the psychology that would ideally inform how we approach education. 61. According to the passage, the author probably thinks that . A.it is abnormal for parents to neglect a learning environment B.it is wrong of parents to try to free their kids from trauma C.it is a pity that few parents know of Emancipated Learning D.it is absurd for parents to adopt homeschooling or unschooling 62. During a 30-minute conversation, . A.abstract theories will be dealt with B.alternative schools will be discussed C.effect of self-directed learning will be explored D.suggestions on how to enjoy learning will be made 63. What does the author emphasize in the passage? A.Parents should change their kidslearning styles. B.Students should be independent of their teachers. C.Schools should encourage self-directed learning. D.Administrators should promote teaching research. 64. The passage is aimed at .A.persuading people to change their ideas B.inviting parents to join in their activity C.criticizing the present educational system D.making a new concept known to the publicD UN scholars have calculated that within the next 10 years the degradation(退化) of farm and grassland could turn 50 million people into migrants. Another UN agency calculated that in the last 25 years, another 3% of the planets forests had been burned or cut down.Once you have read Gaia Vinces book, you start to register the scale of change in a fast-changing world. Adventures in the Anthropocene holds a mirror up to humanity and says: look what you have done to the world, they only world you will ever have. The Anthropocene-the Age of Man-is a proposed new name for the quaternary (第四纪) period that we now live in, and it includes what has e to be called the Great Acceleration, in which during the last 65 years, whatever humans did, they did it faster and more effectively, and on a greater scale, while at the same time reproducing more and dying much less.Did it take 50,000 years to reach a population of one billion? Just in the last 10 years, another billion people appeared on the planet, and by the end of this century, it could be home to 9, or 10, or 11 billion souls, each of which will hope for the minimum to sustain health and contentment. Many of them will demand a lot more, which is where the problems begin. To build cities, pave highways and establish factories, humans decades ago became the greatest earth-moving force on the planet: they each year shift more rock and soil than the wind and the rain, the rivers and the glaciers(冰川) bined.Cities now cover 2% of the planets land: by 2030, this will be 10%. Over the next 80 years, the species will build a city for one million people every 10 days. To keep these cities functioning, humans will consume 18 terawatts of energy and by 2020, around 5 billion of them will have smartphones, and internet access, and already people who are miserably poor can see, at a fingers touch, what they are missing, and want it for themselves, and in the course of trying to get it, consume more resources and cause destruction to ecosystem.Anyone who reads this book will have no excuse for not thinking about it. Vince doesnt just collect the statistics of exploitation and destruction, she goes to see for herself what
