Students and parents are invited to spend a whole day in Oxford, attending events, talking to staff and students and getting answers to any questions which remain after examining prospectuses(简章)and websites. To book or not to book Unlike many other university open days, it is not necessary to book to attend an Oxford open day. Many events are offered on a drop-in basis. What to expect on the day Many departments run their main open day events in the morning so you may choose to start with a visit to your subject department. Here you may attend a talk or sample lecture and chat to tutors and students. Over lunchtime and in the afternoon, colleges offer a range of events, tours and opportunities to meet students and tutors. This is a great time to visit those colleges on your shortlist.Getting around There is no central campus at Oxford University, so events will happen at colleges, departments, museums and libraries all around the city. Most visitors manage this easily on foot, as all open day venues(会场) are within 15 minutes walking distance from the city center, but it is important that you plan your day in advance taking travel time into account. Many events will be very busy and lateers will not always be able to join. Please do not try to drive between venues - there is no parking available and traffic on open days is typically extremely heavy.Disabled visitors Anyone with a mobility impairment(损伤) may borrow a free wheelchair to travel around Oxford city center via Oxford Shop mobility. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me. I was told it would mean a great deal to him, so I agreed. During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩症). When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to five, and then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overing obstacles(障碍)and going for my dreams. I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he plain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didnt mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me. When we had finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I had won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overing obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.” Last summer I received a letter from Matthews parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before:Dick,My mum said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I dont have long to live any more, but I still smile as much as I can.I told you someday that I would go to the Olympics and win a gold medal, but I know now I will never get to do that. Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice as much for goods with organic labels (商标). However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious and safer product, you might want to save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products arent necessarily more nutritious, and theyre no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either. The latest results, published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. “We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,” says Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford. “So consumers shouldnt assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer.” For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that pared health outes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats. While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends. Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesnt always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that “whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste.” Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.8. The new research questions whether organic food _. A. should replace traditional food B. has been overpriced by farmers C. is really more nutritious and healthierD. is grown with less harmful chemicals9. Smith-Spangler and her colleagues found that _. A. organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease B. traditional food was grown with more natural methods C. both organic and traditional food they examined were safe D. there was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food10. Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage? A. Organic chicken and pork.B. Organic milk and chicken. C. Traditional chicken and pork.D. Traditional fruit and vegetables.11. What is the authors attitude toward organic food? A. Grateful. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned.D. Approving. DI have always been somebody who often alternated(交替)between hoping to be alone and hoping to be with others. The thing was, I only wanted to be with others in a very particular way. I wanted to feel warmth between me and the other person. I wanted to feel safe and fortable. I wanted to feel close. If my relationship with someone didnt have closeness, it tended to make me feel lonlier than just being alone.I found most of the advice out there about how to get over loneliness futile. “Put yourself out there more!” the experts said. “Meet more people and you will finally find good friendships.” That only sounded reasonable. Most of us already have people in our lives with whom we feel that spark(火花)of connection, and we just dont know how to properly fan the flames. We dont know how to move from mon interacting with someone to being close. In other words, Ive found that most of us who fight against loneliness do not lack access to other people. Thats not the source of the pain. The source of the pain is the lack of a certain feeling in our relationships. And that feeling is closeness. This feel of closeness is what you really want when you are lonely. The feeling of closeness arises between two people when they both feel that the other understands them well and cares about them deeply. I call these two important qualities of closeness “knowing and caring”.Taken together, knowing and caring are a powerful bination. They say to the other person, “Not only do I see the real you, but I want to keep the real you well.” This is the message you will give and receive from close relationships. Getting to know others in the way that improves closeness means ing to understand them from their own perspective(角度). Closeness doesnt have to be something that happens by accident- it is within your control to create. Starting now, you really can stop being lonely.12. What does the underlined word “futile” mean?A. Unhelpful. B. Wonderful. C. Useful. D. Unbelievable.13. According to the author, most people who feel lonely _ A. should make more new friendsB. dont lack chances to contact other peopleC. dont know how to express their feelingsD. refuse to change their attitudes toward others14. According to the passage, the feeling of closeness is _ .A. what we really need in our daily lifeB. something we cant control or createC. based on understanding and valuing each otherD. the most important for building a good relationship15. To build a close relationship with others, we should _ .A. learn to look after othersB. share our thoughts and feelingsC. spend more time staying with othersD. think more from otherss points of view第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。(如果所用的答题卡没有E、F、G选项,则选E涂A、B,选F涂A、C,选G涂A、D。) We all face quantities of stresses in day-to-day living, whether at work, in the home, or anywhere in between. 16 Heres how stress can help us on an everyday basis. Sharpening your memory. Did you ever notice that sometimes when you are stressed, your memory seems to improve? Remember that test you passed where the answers seemed to e out of nowhere? 17 Its because of stress hormones (荷尔蒙) that increase your alertness when its most needed. 18 Successful employees turn stress into motivation. Have you ever noticed that you get the least amount of work done when you have the fewest deadlines? Too little stress can affect how much you actually get done. When you take risks and choose to get over the difficulty, it improves your mental toughness and self-confidence. Helping you resist the attack of illness. 19 Believe it or not, the right kind of stress can help your bodys defenses against illness. When you get sick, stress causes you to make hormones that battle threats to your health. That burst of stress is helpful to your immune system when your body faces a threat. Making your life more interesting. Think about some stressful situations that we consciously put ourselves in to make life more interesting and enjoyable, like asking someone out on a first date, conquering a known fear, or learning something new. These may not immediately e to mind when you think of stress because of the positive outes. 20 A. Helping you get an advantage at work. B. Helping you get through difficult times. C.
