Taras apologyCI live in rural Virginia, and my high school was in between two farms. Although I was never much into sports, I had a few friends who were on the cross-country running team. The course for the cross-country track took a meandering path around the school. One part of the course took the runners past an old farmhouse, deserted on the top of a hill overlooking the school. There were rumors that it was haunted, but to my knowledge no one ever saw or heard anything there. It was just a big, old, deserted house. That being said, I shall relate the story of my friend on the CC run, and the discovery made by myself and some panions one day.Her name was Candy, and she was on the CC team. She was hardly the star member, and would, unfortunately, often find herself running alone. One day, when as usual the pack had left her far behind, she found herself alone in front of the old house. Glancing up, she saw someone walk past an upstairs window. She was scared. She told this to us, and wedecided to check the place out the following day. What we found there was the typical old falling-apart farmhouse. Empty rooms, creaky floorboards, beer bottles, and cigarette butts.enread./story/shuangyu/103864.html - _w_10. Then we rounded the corner from the old living room to go upstairs, and each of us stopped dead in our tracks. There were no stairs. Obviously, the stairwell had collapsedlong ago. We explored the house more carefullybut there was no way to reach the second floor. As in the middle of our exploration we heard a big noise outside, and we all beat a hasty retreat out the back.I dont know if it was a ghost she saw, or if it were someone who could climb like an orangutan(猩猩), but its all a moot point now. That house was pulled down only one year later, and a nice shiny new modern house was built in its place. I wonder if the owner of that house have any late night visitors.28. Its a belief that people hold.DTowards the end of Middle English, a sudden change in pronunciation started, with vowels (元音) being pronounced shorter and shorter. From the 16th century the British municated with people frequently from around the world. This means that lots of new words and expressions entered the language. The invention of printing also meant that there was a mon language in print. Books became cheaper and more people learned to read. Spelling and grammar became fixed and the dialect of London became the standard. In 1604, the first English dictionary came out. Early Modern English and Late Modern English are mostly different in the number of words. Late Modern English has a lot more words, mainly because of two reasons: firstly, the Industrial Revolution led to the need for new words; secondly, the British Empire covered one quarter of the earths surface, and the English language took in foreign words from many countries. From around 1600, the English colonization (殖民地化) of North America led to the creation of American English. Some English pronunciations and words froze when they reached America. In some ways, American English is more like the English of Shakespeare than modern British English. Some expressions that the British call “American English” are in fact from British expressions. They were kept in the colonies but were lost for a time in Britain. Spanish also had an influence on American English. For example, words like “canyon” “ranch” “stampede” and “vigilante” are from Spanish. They entered English by the people of Spain who settled in the American West. French words and West African words also influenced American English. Today, American English has a greater influence because of the USAs movies, television, popular music, trade and technology. 32.
