I got a taste of that dream in xx,when my husband arranged for me me ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull. Around that time ,I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement munity(社区)announced that they were having an essay petition and the topic was anexperience of a lifetime that you wanted to have, I decided to write about my dream. In the essay, I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating George Brush Sr. did it at age 80.Why not me? I was just 84 and in pretty good health. A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a munity party in late April xx, they announced that I was one of the winners. I just couldn t believe it. Inspired by this, I decided to realize my dream, even though some of my family members and my doctor were against it. One June 11, xx, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to whereI would land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructor, Jay, guided me through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in, but I wasnt frightenedI was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. When we first hit the air, the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” But then everything got calmer. We were in a free fall for about a minute before Jay opened the parachute(降落伞), then we just floated downward for about five minutes. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever feltmuch better than the hot air balloon. I was just enjoying it.Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope other people will look at me and realize that you don t stop living just because you are 84 years old. He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank at the South Street Seaport museum. He handed the girl to her father, David Anderson, who had dived in after him. “ I didnt think at all,” Duret told the Daily News. “ It happened very fast. I reacted very fast.” Duret, an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the pier (码头) when he saw something falling into the water. He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he approached the river. In an instant, he took off his coat and jumped into the water. When he reached the girl, she appeared lifeless, he said. Fortunately, when she was out of the water, she opened her eyes. Anderson said his daughter slipped off the bank when he was adjusting his camera. An ambulance came later for her, said Duret, who was handed dry clothes from onlookers. Duret caught a train with his girlfriend shortly after. The rescue happened on the day before he left for France. CFor many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do? Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents plete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped. In this article, Ill describe three no-win situations that monly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teens hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the childs failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesnt matter what the topic ispolitics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an eggthe point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authoritysomeone who actually knows somethingand therefore to mand respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, theyll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.9. Why does the author pare the parent-teen war to a border conflict?A. Both can continue for generations. B. Both are about where to draw the line. C. Neither has any clear winner. D. Neither can be put to an end.10. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?A. The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict. B. The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict. C. The teens accuse their parents of misleading them. D. The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.11. Parents and teens want to be right because they want to _.A. give orders to the other B. know more than the other C. gain respect from the other D. get the other to behave properly12. What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?A. Causes for the parent-teen conflicts. B. Examples of the parent-teen war. C. Solutions for the parent-teen problems. D. Future of the parent-teen relationship.DModern inventions have speeded up peoples lives amazingly. Motor-cars cover a hundred miles in little more than an hour, aircraft cross the world inside a day, while puters operate at lightning speed. Indeed, this love of speed seems never-ending. Every year motor-cars are produced which go even faster and each new puter boasts (吹嘘) of saving precious seconds in handling tasks. All this saves time, but at a price. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across the world in an airplane, our bodies tell us so. We get the unfortable feeling known as jet-lag; our bodies feel that they have been left behind in another time zone. Again, spending too long at puter results in painful wrists and fingers. Mobile phones also have their dangers, according to some scientists; too much use may transmit harmful radiation into our brains, a consequence we do not like to think about. However, what do we do with the time we have saved? Certainly not relax, or so it seems. We are so accustomed to constant activity that we find it difficult to sit and do nothing, or even just one thing at a time. Perhaps the days are long gone when we might listen quietly to a story on the radio, letting imagination take us into another world. There was a time when some peoples lives were devoted simply to the cultivation of the land or the care of cattle. No multi-tasking there; their lives went on at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much that we might envy about a way of life like this. Yet before we do so, we must think of the hard tasks our ancestors faced: they farmed with bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and had to fashion tools from wood and stone. Modern machinery has freed people from that primitive existence.13. The new products bee more and more time-saving because _.A. our love of speed seems never-ending B. time is limited C. the prices are increasingly high D. the manufacturers boast a lot 14. What is the authors attitude towards the modern technology?A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Negative.15. What does the passage mainly discuss?A. The present and past times. B. Machinery and human beings. C. Imaginations and inventions. D. Modern technology and its influence. .第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Many people find they consistently lack energy and always feel tired. Im writing to tell you something about a meaningful volunteer activity that I participated in last week. To make riding the subway in Beijing a pleasant and fortable experience for passengers, the students of our class decided to do something to make a difference. Last Friday, we gathered at the station near our school in the afternoon and began doing different jobs. Some of us remained on the platform, calling on passengers to help keep the surroundings clean. Others, meanwhile, entered each car to pick up litter on the floor and seats. Tired as we were, everyone felt a sense of achievement upon seeing the tidy subway cars.Through this activity, I have realized that with every individual doing their part, we will create a better world. Have you had a similar experience? Just let me know. Sincerely,Li HuaPossible version 2Dear Jeff, How is everything going? Im writing to tell you something about our pleasant spring outing last week.
