It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not. In my first literature class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.” She glanced down at me through her glasses, “You are no different from your classmates, young man.” I tried, but I didnt finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home. In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldnt get much education. But Louis didnt give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind. Wasnt I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I pleted the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up? I didnt expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day-with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: “See what you can do when you keep trying?”4. The author didnt finish the reading in class because _.A.he was new to the classB.he was tired of literatureC.he had an attention disorderD.he wanted to take the task home.5. What do we know about Louis Braille from the passage?A.He had good sight.B.He made a great invention.C.He gave up reading.D.He learned a lot from school.6.What was Mrs. Smiths attitude to the author at the end of the story?A.Angry.B.Impatient.C.Sympathetic.D.Encouraging.7.What is the main idea of the passage?A.The disabled should be treated with respect.B.A teacher can open up a new world to students.C.One can find his way out of difficulties with efforts.D.Everyone needs a hand when faced with challenges. C Two recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behavior. One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study. They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoners Dilemma. The game is based on the tension (紧张气氛) between the interests (利益) of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players, at a cost to the punisher.Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded it the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded it the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings were. The group with the most punishment earned twenty-five percent less than the group with the least punishment. The study appeared last month in the journal Science. The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on violence and abuse. Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children aged two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children aged five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study pared the results with the first test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not. The study says the IQsor intelligence quotientsof the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points.Murray Strauss from the University of New Hampshire worked with Mallie Paschall from the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation. Professor Strauss has written extensively about physical punishment of children. He says the more they are spanked, the slower their mental development. He also looked at average IQs in other nations and found them lower where spanking was more mon.8. According to the first study, we mainly infer that _. A. the game is called Prisoners Dilemma B. the less a group punished itself, the lower its earningsC. adults are much more cooperative if rewardedD. the game is introduced in the journal Science 9.The underlined word “spanked”in fifth paragraph probably means .A.wonB.punishedC.testedD.praised10.Which could be the best title of the passage?A.PunishmentB.The Best Way to Influence Behavior.C.Punishment or Reward: Which Works Better on Behavior?D.Two Recent Studies.11.The author develops the passage _. .A.in order of timeB.in order of importanceC.by describing his experiencesD.by using quotations and statisticsD The flying car has been talked about for many years, but now it appears to bee a reality. An international pany has built a two-seater plane that, at the touch of a button, transforms into a car perfectly suitable for driving on public roads. It takes 15 seconds to switch between flying and driving. With its wings fully open and the propeller(螺旋桨) spinning, it can take off from any airfield. Flying cars are quicker than traditional ones, and they can run on ordinary fuel. Another big advantage is that they are cool, like something you would see in an action film. At the moment, however, the flying cars wheels are illegal to leave the ground. That is not because of technical reasons or problems with the design. It is because the various road and aircraft authorities simply cannot agree on whether it is a car or a plane. Nevertheless the pany hopes to produce and deliver its first flying car soon. The pany already has orders for 40 of them. The majority potential customers are older and some are retired. There have even been orders from some people who have no pilots license. The flying car will cost around $ 200,000. “For an airplane, thats a very reasonable price, but for a car, its quite expensive,” explains Alan. “But it just is not possible to make a $ 10,000 flying car yet.” This latest means of transport will not bee a mass-market item in the near future, but in the long term it has the potential to change the way you travel. It will bee no more expensive than driving your car on the motorway. Travel time could be reduced by more than half. So the next time you are told to fasten your seat belt, it may be to prepare for take-off. 12、We know from the passage that the flying car _. .Ahas to run on special fuelBwill replace traditional planesCis popular with the richDcan shift between two forms13、The flying car is presently forbidden to take off because _. .Amany people think driving is not very safeBits hard to decide whether its a car or a planeCthe government and the authorities accept itDthere are still some technical problems to be solved14、According to the passage, we can learn _. .Ain the future few people will be able to afford a flying earBowning two kinds of driving licenses is of great importanceCbecause of the appearance of the flying car, traffic jams will disappearDflying cars may share the market in the future15、Whats the best title of the passage?AYour Car Is Ready for Take-offBFlying Car Will Be the Leading Means of TransportationCAffording a Flying Car Is a NecessityDThe Advantages of Flying Cars第二节:根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,注意其中两项为多余选项。 School safety issues involve more than violence.
