But it is thought that emotions such as anger, or joy, typically make Americans feel unfortable and embarrassed. The shedder of tears(落泪者) is likely to apologize, even when a great tragedy was the cause. The observer of tears is likely to do everything possible to put an end to the emotional tears. But judging from recent studies of crying behavior, both those responses to tears are often inappropriate and may even be counterproductive (适得其反). Humans are the only animals clearly known to shed emotional tears. Since evolution has given rise to few purposeless physiological responses, it is logical to assume that crying has one or more functions that increase survival. Although some observers have suggested that crying is a way to ask for assistance form others (as a crying baby might from its mother), the shedding of tears is hardly necessary to get help. Vo-cal (出声的) cries would have been quite enough, more likely than tears to gain attention. So, it appears that there must be something special about tears themselves. Indeed, the new studies suggest that emotional tears may play a direct role in easing stress. University of Minnesota researchers who are studying the chemical position of tears have recently separated two important chemicals from emotional tears. Both chemicals are found only in tears that are shed in response to emotion. Tears shed because of exposure to cut onion would contain no such substance. Other researchers are looking into the usefulness of tears as a means of diagnosing human ills and monitoring drugs. At Tulane Universitys Teat Analysis Laboratory Dr. Peter Kastl and his colleagues report that they can use tears to detect drug abuse, to study the causes of dry eye syndrome(综合症) and the effects of eye surgery, and perhaps even to measure exposure to environmental pollutants. 56. What does the phrase both those responses in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. Crying out of sorrow and shedding tears for happiness. B. The embarrassment and unpleasant feelings of the observers. C. Linking illness with crying and finding the chemical position of tears. D. The tear shedders apology and the observers effort to stop the crying. 57. It is known from the first paragraph that_. A. shedding tears gives unpleasant feelings to Americans B. crying may often result in tragedyC. crying usually wins sympathy from other peopleD. one who sheds tears in public will be blamed58. From the passage we can infer that_. A. it is unnatural for people to shed tearsB. we can reduce our stress by shedding tearsC. shedders of tears can t get help by crying loudlyD. unlike animals, humans can shed tears for survivalB Did you know that womens brains are smaller than mens? The average womens brain weighs 10% less than mens. Since research has shown that the bigger the brain, the cleverer the animal, men must be more intelligent than women. Right? Wrong. Men and women always score similarly on intelligence tests, despite the difference in brain size. Why? After years of study, researchers have concluded that its whats inside that matters, not just the size of the brain. The brain consists of “grey matter” and “white matter”. While men have more of the latter, the amount of “thinking” brain is almost exactly the same in both sexes. It has been suggested that smaller brain appears to work faster, perhaps because the two sides of the brain are better connected in women. This means that little girls tend to learn to speak earlier, and that women can understand sorts of information from different sources at the same time. When it es to talking to the boss on the phone, cooking dinner and keeping an eye on the baby all at the same time, its women who e out on top every time. There are other important differences between two sexes. As white matter is the key to spatial(空间的) tasks, men know better where things are in relation to other things. “A great footballer always knows where he is in relation to the other players, and he knows where to go,” says one researcher. That may explain one of lifes great mysteries: why men refuse to ask for direction and women often need to! The differences begin when fetuses(胎儿) are about nine weeks old, which can be seen in the action of children as young as one. A boy would try to climb a barrier before him or push it down while a girl would attract help from others. These brain differences also explain the fact that more men take up jobs that require good spatial skills, while more women speech skills. It may all go back to our ancestors, among whom women needed speech skills to take care of their babies and men needed spatial skills to hunt, according to one research. If all this disappoints you, it shouldnt. “The brain changes throughout our lives according to what we do with it.” says a biologist. 59. Which of the following is true according to the first paragraph?A. Womens grey matter is 10% less than mens.B. Grey matter plays the same role as white matter. C.
