After inventing dynamites(炸药), Swedish-born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he foresaw its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Originally there were five awards: literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, and peace. Economics was added in 1968, just sixty-seven years after the first awards ceremony.Nobels original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is used for the awards which vary from $ 30,000 to $125,000.Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobels death, the awards (gold medal, illuminated diploma, and money) are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an important role in the judges decision. Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively few literature prizes. No awards were presented from 1940 to 1942 at the beginning of World War II. Some people have won two prizes, but this is rare; others have shared their prizes. (from nmet168)1. What did the first award ceremony take place?A. 1895. B. 1901. C. 1962. D. 1968.2. The agreement or treaty which created the organization that eventually became the EU,the Treaty of Rome, stated that each country s language must be treated equally. The original six countries had only three languages between them:French, German and Dutch/Flemish.However,there are now 15 countries in the EU,with a total of 12 languages.EU documents must be translated into all these languages, and at official meetings the speeches must be translated into all the languages by interpreters. All this translating is very expensive and time consuming(费时的)It is said that nearly half of all employees of the EU are engaged in translating documents and speeches, and nearly half of the EUs administrative(管理方面的)costs are spent on this task.In the near future it is probably that several more countries, most of them having their own languages, will join the EU,thus making the situation even worse. The problem is not just cost:there are practical difficulties as well. With 12 languages, there are 132 possible “translation situations” that might be needed. It is often difficult to find people in the right place at the right time who can translate from (for example) Danish into Greek,or Dutch into Portuguese,at a high professional standard. In practice the problem has been made less severe by the use of English in many contacts between EU officials, since almost all of them speak some English. However, any move to reduce the number of official languages(perhaps to four or five)would be a blow to the price of the smaller countries.Another monly suggested solution is to make English the official language for all EU business. However, this is strongly resisted by powerful member countries like France and Germany.1Whats the main purpose of this passage?A. To give a solution to a problem.BTo find out a problem and show how severe it is.CTo criticize the European Union for ill efficiency.DTo show that the problem cannot be solved. D。2According to the writer, the use of English in contacts among EU officials has_.A. angered the officials who dont speak EnglishBreduced the number of official languagesClessened the effect of the problemDbeen opposed by powerful member countries答案:C推理判斯题。 C。3The writer mentions “Danish into Greek”as an example of_.A. a situation that might be difficult to deal with Ba situation that occurs oftenCone of the 12 situations that require an interpreter Dlanguages easily being interpreted答案:A细节理解题。 4The writer suggests that if the number of official languages was reduced_.A. the EU would not know which official languages to choose Bcountries whose languages were not used officially would be unhappyConly languages which are easy to translate would be used officiallyDthe smaller member countries would be pleased答案:B推理判断题由文章最后一段第二句可知本题选B。 The song that has meant the most to me since I was the age of five, watching the movie Space Jam,is called “I Believe I Can Fly” by RKelly.Every time I listen to the song,it_1_me that as long as I believe,I can be or do_2_I want in life even with a disability.I didnt know much of what the song_3_a long time ago but as I grew older,I still loved the song and started to listen to the_4_more and more.Every time I listen to it,I think about all the obstacles I have_5_.When I was little,I had to_6_a wheelchair because I have a disability. The doctors told my mother I had a slim_7_of ever walking but I was_8_to walk because I disliked that wheelchair.I knew that I had to believe in myself to_9_my goal to walk someday. One day the doctor told my mother that he could make a(n)_10_that would help me walk._11_when I was seven and onehalf,I had my first surgery.I_12_the cast because it was a half body cast, with a bar in the middle of my legs.I was a very_13_kid so being in a bed for six weeks, not being able to move,I felt horrible.I knew after all the_14_and the crying it would be worth_15_it in the long run._16_,at the age of eight,I got my cast off.I felt free when I finally_17_all the therapy (治疗) and learned how to_18_.The song_19_,“I see me running through that open door.” Thats what I felt like.Like the song says,“There are miracles in life I must achieve, but first I know it starts inside of me,oh.” 1.
