Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place. The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between xx and xx. It now makes up a third of a typical households waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are ing round to the idea that this cannot continue , encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But is also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary. There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realise just how much unnecessary material are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.56. The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show _.A. the tendency of cutting household wasteB. the increase of packaging recyclingC. the rapid growth of super marketsD. the fact of packaging overuse57. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4? A. Unpackaged products are of bad quality. B. Supermarkets care more about packaging. C. It is improper to judge quality by packaging. D. Other products are better packaged than food.58. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Fighting wastefulness is difficult. B. Needless material is mostly recycled. C. People like collecting recyclable waste. D. The author is proud of their consumer culture.59. According to the text, recycling _. A. helps control the greenhouse effect B. means burning packaging for energy C. is the solution to gas shortage D. leads to a waste of land60. What does the underlined phrase “over-consumption” refer to? A. Using too much packaging. B. Recycling too many wastes.C. Making more products than necessary.D. Having more material than is needed.BParents are often amazed at how fast their child grows and develops. New research has determined that the ability to quantify may develop much sooner than most parents realize.Kristy vanMarle, professor of the University of Missouri, has determined that contrary to what previous studies have shown, infants(婴儿)are able to quantify substances(物质)like sand or wateras early as 10 months. As long as the difference between the two substances is large enough, infants will choose the larger amount, especially when it es to food. With the assistance of her team researchers, vanMarle tested the quantifying skills of babies by presenting them with two cups: one containing a small amount of food, and one containing a larger amount. Consistently, the babies chose the larger amount.“Several studies throughout the last 15 years have shown that infants are very good at telling how many objects they see; however, infants dont seem to count things like water or sand,” vanMarle said. “What were saying is that they can quantify substances; The infants can see how much food goes into each cup and pare that in their memories. They decide which amount is larger, and they almost always select the larger one.”This information further refutes(驳斥)the long-held idea that babies “know nothing of the world,” vanMarle said.“Since psychologists have begun studying infants with sensitive measures, weve discovered a lot of early abilities. I think for parents, it should be exciting to know that theres somebody there that has some fundamental and basic knowledge of the world, and that knowledge is guiding their development,” vanMarle said.In the future, vanMarle says this kind of study could be linked to a childs progress in math-related skills, although programs marketed to increase those abilities, such as “Baby Einstein,” still have mixed reviews when it es to academic study. 61. Babies choose the larger amount of food .A. by saying numbersB. with the help of parentsC. on personal preferenceD. through their natural abilities62. The quantifying ability refers to the ability to .A. choose between different substancesB. get much knowledge of the worldC. describe the quantity of somethingD. obtain math-related skills63. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4?A. The process of doing research.B. The scientific findings.C. The final choice of infants.D. The observation of infants behavior. 64. We can learn from the text that .A. some parents dont care about their kidsB. people used to think the world is known to babiesC. little research has been done on infantsD. scholars disagree on baby-training programs65. Whats the best title of the text?A. Breakthrough in Baby StudiesB. Amazing Baby-training IdeasC. Early Human AbilitiesD. Unique Quantifying MethodsC.The Ivy League is an athletic conference prising eight private institutions of higher education in the Northeastern United States. The term is most monly used to refer to those eight schools considered as a group. The term is also connected with academic excellence, selectivity in admissions, and social elitism(精英主义).The term became official, especially in sports terminology, after the formation of the NCAA Division I athletic conference in 1954, when much of the nation polarized around favorite college teams. “IV” was used because originally the league consisted only of four members. The use of the phrase is no longer limited to athletics, and now represents an educational philosophy inherent to ( 固有的,内在的)the nations oldest schools. In addition, Ivy League schools are often viewed by the public as some of the most prestigious (著名的)universities worldwide and are often ranked amongst the best universities in the United States and worldwide. The eight institutions are Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University. All of the Ivy Leagues institutions place near the top in the U.S. News & World Report college and university rankings and rank within the top one percent of the worlds academic institutions in terms of financial endowment(捐助). Seven of the eight schools were founded during Americas colonial period; the exception is Cornell, which was founded in 1865. Ivy League institutions, therefore, account for seven of the nine Colonial Colleges chartered before the American Revolution. The Ivies are all in the Northeast geographic region of the United States. All eight schools receive millions of dollars in research grants and other subsidies from federal and state government.Undergraduate enrollments among the Ivy League schools range from about 4,000 to 14,000, making them larger than those of a typical private liberal arts college and smaller than a typical public state university. Ivy League university financial endowments range from Browns $2.01 billion to Harvards $26 billion, the largest financial endowment of any academic institution in the world.66. Which meaning can the term “the Ivy League” convey today? A. The largest enrollment. B. The strongest government support. C. The most expensive schools.D. First-class education. 67. From the passage, we know the word “Ivy” in “the Ivy League” was first chosen to refer to _. A. a plant B. a number C. a sport D. a spirit 68. Which of the following statements is true? A. There is no longer sports petition in the Ivy League. B. Seven colleges were set up before the USA was founded. C. Brown University has the smallest number of students. D. Typical public state universities are larger than the Ivies. 69. What is special about Cornell University in the League? A. It is the oldest one. B. It was founded by colonists. C. It has the smallest endowment. D. It is the youngest one. 70. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A. The ABC of “The Ivy League” B. Best Universities in the USA C. The Financial Ine of American Universities D. How to Apply to an Ivy League University D The xx London Olympics had enough problems to worry about. But one more has just been added - a munications blackout caused by solar storms. After a period of calm within the Sun, scientists have detected the signs of a flesh cycle of sunspots that could peak in xx, just in time for the arrival of the Olympic torch in London. Now scientists believe that this peak could result in vast solar explosions that could throw billions of tons of charged matter towards the Earth, causing strong solar storms that could jam the telemunications satellites and interact links sending five Olympic broadcast from London. The Suns activity has a strong influence on the Earth. The Olympics could be in the middle of the next solar maximum which could affect the functions of munications satellites, said Professor Richard Harrison, head of space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. At the peak of the cycle, violent outbursts called coronal mass ejections (日冕物质抛射) occur in the Suns atmosphere, throwing out great quantities of electrically-charged matter. A coronal mass ejection can carry a billion tons of solar material into space at over a million kilometres per hour. Such events can expose astronauts to a deadly amount, can disable satellites, cause power failures on Earth and disturb munications, Professor Harrison added. The risk is greatest during a solar maximum when there is the greatest number of sunspots. Next week in America, NASA is scheduled to launch a satellite for monitoring solar activity called the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which will take images of the Sun that are 10 times clearer than the most advanced televisions available. The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory helped to make the high-tech cameras that will capture images of the solar flares (太阳耀斑) and explosions as they occur. Professor Richard Hold away, the labs director, said that the SDO should be able to provide early warning of a solar flare or explosion big enough to affect satellite munications on Earth If we have advan
