After having room service three nights at a hotel in Houston, however, I needed to get out of my room. Although the restaurant opened at 6:30, I arrived at 6:25. The waiter at the front desk made a ment (评论) about my “being there really early”. I explained my dislike of eating alone in restaurants. He then seated me at a lovely table and asked me whether I would mind if he sat down with me for a while. I was glad! He sat and talked with me about his career goals and the difficulty of being at work on nights, weekends and holidays. He said he hadnt enough time to be with his family. After 15 minutes, he saw some customers at the front desk and excused himself. I noticed that before he went to the front desk, he stopped in the kitchen for a moment. Then another waiter came out of the kitchen and had a wonderful chat with me. Before I left that night, some other waiters, even the cook, had e out of the kitchen and sat with me! When I asked for my bill about one hour later, all the people who had sat down with me came over in a big group to my table, and presented me with a red rose. And I cried! What had begun as a lonely night ended as a beautiful experience. 21. The author asked for room service because _. I felt in my pocket for a box of matches, but could not find any. “I havent got any either,” said John. Sitting opposite us was a man whose face was hidden by a newspaper. “Excuse me, sir,” said John, leaning across. “Could you give me a light, please?” The newspaper was lowered to reveal a rather elderly man with a stern(严肃的) face. “This is a no-smoking partment,” the man said. He indicated (指向) the notice near the window. We apologized and put away our unlit cigarettes. The man went on, in a rather more kindly fashion, to warn us against the dangers of smoking. “I speak as a doctor,” he concluded, and after that he went back to reading his newspaper. When he got out a few stations later, he left his newspaper behind him. We picked it up, eager(渴望) to find out what had happened while we were on holiday. “Just look at this,” remarked John, pointing to a photograph. “Its the man who was sitting opposite us.” Underneath his photograph was an account of a lunatic(精神病人)who had recently escaped. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours. It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City. Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very mon name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momands series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years. People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead. 27.Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they _.
