They settled in at a fortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table. “Hey, arent you from Mississippi?” the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. “Im from Mississippi too.” Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair. “They began telling me all the news of Mississippi,” Welty said. “I didnt know what my New York friends were thinking.” Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Weltys new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi state reunion(团聚) . “My friends said: Now we believe your stories, ” Welty added. “And I said: Now you know. These are the people that make me write them. ” Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation. “I dont make them up,” she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. “I dont have to.” Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Weltys people e from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves longterm scars on childrens bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing changes that are equal to seven to ten years of premature aging.Scientists measured this by studying the ends of childrens chromosomes(染色体), called telomeres, says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.Telomeres are special DNA sequences(序列) which prevent the DNA in chromosomes from separating. They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres, including smoking, radiation and psychological stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking care of a chronically ill person. In this study, researchers examined whether exposure to violence could make childrens telomeres shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at ages 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the youngsters had been exposed to domestic violence between the mother and her partner; physical maltreatment by an adult; or bullying. Researchers measured the childrens telomeresin cells obtained by swabbing the insides of their cheeksat ages 5 and 10.Telomeres shortened faster in kids exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless that pattern changes, the study suggests, these kids could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years earlier than their peers.Shalev says there is hope for these kids. His study found that, in rare cases, telomeres can lengthen. Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction are three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he says. The study confirms a smallbutgrowing number of studies suggesting that early childhood adversity(不幸) imprints itself in our chromosomes, says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics and neuroscience(小儿神经科) at Harvard Medical School.61. According to the text, telomeres _.A. are at the ends of peoples chromosomesB. can make a cell die quicklyC. can help prevent DNA from separating D. bee shorter before they die62. All of the following things can shorten telomeres EXCEPT _.A. doing exercise B. cell divisionC. maltreatment D. smoking63. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the text?A. Researchers measured the childrens telomeres from their legs in the study.B. Violence can cause quick cell division in childrens body.C. Children who have shorter telomeres may have a heart attack earlier.D. Being treated badly will make a childs telomeres shorten faster.64. What is the best title for the text?A. The Function of TelomeresB. Childrens Changing DNA PatternsC. Violence and TelomeresD. Violence Aging Childrens DNA DGiven all the heated debates about how Americas children should be taught, it may e as a surprise to learn that students spend less than 15% of their time in school. While theres no doubt that school is important, a series of recent studies remind us that parents are even more so. A study, for example, finds that parental involvementchecking homework, attending school meetings and events, discussing school activities at homehas a more powerful influence on students academic performance than anything about the school the students attend. Another study, reports that the effort put forth by parents has a bigger impact on their childrens educational achievement than the effort devoted by either teachers or the students themselves. And a third study concludes that schools would have to increase their spending by more than $1,000 per pupil in order to achieve the same results that are gained with parental involvement . So parents matter a lota point made clear by decades of research showing that a major part of the academic advantage held by children from wealthy families es from the “concerted cultivation(协作培养)of children” as pared to the more laissez-faire style of parenting mon in working-class families. But this research also reveals something else: that parents, of all backgrounds, dont need to buy expensive educational toys or digital devices for their kids in order to give them an edge. They dont need to chauffeur their offspring to enrichment classes or test-prep courses. What they need to do with their children is much simpler: talk. But not just any talk. Although well-known research by psychologists Betty Hart and Todd Risley has shown that professional parents talk more to their children than less-affluent parentsa lot more, resulting in a 30 million “word gap” by the time children reach age threemore recent researches are raising our sense of exactly what kinds of talks at home contributed to childrens success at school. For example, a study conducted by researchers at the UCLA School of Public Health and published in the journal Pediatrics found that two-way adult-child conversations were six times as effective in promoting language development as interludes in which the adult did all the talking. Engaging in this reciprocal back-and-forth gives children a chance to try out language for themselves, and also gives them the sense that their thoughts and opinions matter. As they grow older, this feeling helps middle- and upper-class kids develop into confident supporters for their own interests, while working-class students tend to avoid asking for help or arguing their own case with teachers, according to a research presented at American Sociological Association conference earlier this year. The content of parents conversations with kids matters, too. Children who hear talk about counting and numbers at home start school with much more extensive mathematical knowledge, which predicts future achievement in the subject. Psychologist Susan Levine, who led the study on number words, has also found that the amount of talk young children hear about the spatial properties of the physical worldhow big or small or round or sharp objects arepredicts kids problem-solving abilities as t
