Its not easy to explain why one person is intelligent and another is not, or why one is cooperative and another is petitive.Social scientists are, of course, extremely interested in these types of questions. They want to explain why we possess certain characteristics and exhibit certain behaviors. There are no clear answers yet, but two distinct schools of thought on the matter have developed. As one might expect, the two approaches are very different from each another, and there is a great deal of debate between proponents of each theory. The controversy is often conveniently referred to as nature vs. nurture. Those who support the “nature” side of the conflict believe that our personalities and behavior patterns are largely determined by biological and genetic factors. That our environment has little, if anything, to do with our abilities, characteristics, and behavior is central to this theory. Taken to an extreme, this theory maintains that our behavior is predetermined (注定) to such a degree that we are almost pletely governed by our instincts (本能). Proponents of the “nurture” theory, or, as they are often called, behaviorists, claimed that our environment is more important than our biologically based instincts in determining how we will act. Behaviorist see humans as beings whose behavior is almost pletely shaped by their surroundings. Their view of the human being is quite mechanistic; they maintain that, like machines, humans respond to environmental stimuli (something that helps sb./sth. to develop better and more quickly) as the basis of their behavior. The social and political connections of these two theories are significant. In the United States, for example, blacks often score below whites on standardized intelligent test. This leads some “nature” proponents to conclude that blacks are genetically worse than whites. Behaviorists, in contrast, say that the differences in scores are due to the fact that blacks are often robbed of many of the educational and other environmental advantages that whites enjoy, and that, as a result, they do not develop the same responses that whites do.Neither of these theories can yet fully explain human behavior. In fact, it is quite likely that the key to our behavior lies somewhere between these two extremes. That the argument will continue for a long time is certain.59. The author is mainly concerned about solving the problem .A. why our personalities and behaviors differB. what makes different stages of intelligenceC. how social scientists form different theoriesD. what causes the “nature/ nurture” argument60. Which of the following statements may be supported by the “nature” school?A. We are born with certain personalities and behaviors.B. Environment has nothing to do with our personalities.C. Abilities and characteristics are showed by behaviors.D. Only extreme behaviors are determined by instincts.61. What can we learn about the behaviorists?A. They believe human beings are mechanical.B. They pare our behaviors to the machines.C. They suggest that we react to the environment as the machines do.D. They agree that the mechanistic theory can be applied on us as well.CFour years ago ray sweet mom went to be with her Lord. She did it her way.I got 1he call at work, and I headed home quickly. Mora and Dad lived on a small farm that they had owned since I was seven. I hated going there every weekend. There was nothing for a young girl to do but watch the one station on the old TV set, if the weather allowed reception. My mom, on the other hand, loved the peace and quiet of the land and loved to work in the garden among her flowers and vegetables. The place was rustic, with no indoor plumbing or heat. We had a big wood stove in the kitchen that did its best to heat the little farmhouse, but it always seemed cold and too quiet to roe.In the evenings, my mom and I would sit for hours singing in the little kitchen. I sang the melody and Mom harmonized. Her favorite song was “Moon River” and we sang it over and over. Mom told me stories about how when I was a little girl, I could sing before I could talk. She loved to tell how my playpen (婴儿圈栏) sat in the kitchen next to the radio and there was one song I particularly loved called “Ivory Tower”.As time passed, I had my own children and went to visit every week or two. The kids loved the farm and the tractor rides with my dad. Me, well, I still hated the silence of the farm. While my mom loved to sit at her kitchen table and look out at her garden and flowers and retell ail the old stories, I missed the hustle and bustle (喧闹) of my life at home. But I sat there listening quietly as she reminisced. Now, I sat back in the silence and the silence was deafening so I finally leaned over to turn on an old radio. Music always forted me.My heart skipped a beat. “Moon River” was playing on the radio. I sat there stunned, with a tear running down my cheek, as I listened to every familiar note. Then the radio announcer of this oldie station came on. “Heres one we havent heard in a while,” and an unfamiliar song began. I began to cry harder as I heard the words sung over the airwaves. “e down, e down from your Ivory Tower.”62. The writer didnt like staying in the farm for the following reasons EXCEPT that .A. it was too cold and quietB. she could only sing one song in the small farmC. there was nothing more that could make her excitedD. Moms music第二卷(共35分)第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题0.5分,满分5分)请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填1个单词。Living in a foreign country is fun, but it isnt always easy. There are many differences between cultures and although some of these differences are unimportant, they can cause a lot of embarrassment. I spoke to a few foreign friends about how they experienced culture shock in China.Aubin arrived two months ago from Europe to take part in a language programme in Shanghai. Before he left, he was actually taught the differences between European and Chinese cultures, including everything from table manners to classroom behavior. However, some things have still taken him by surprise. For example, he couldnt understand why waiters did not want to accept the tips he gave them after meals in restaurants. I had to explain to him that people dont usually tip in China and that this es from the Confucian idea that one must avoid accepting any undue ine.Another friend, Julia, came to Guangzhou from London to teach at a language school. After a month, she told me that she was really let down by her students. I asked her why and she told me that they were so quiet that she was the only person talking in class and it felt like the children were punishing her by making her talk to the walls! I explained to her that the children were simply respectful, but she said that it would be more respectful if they answered her questions. And it is not only the West and the East that have cultural differences. Even Korea and China, two countries that are very close to each other, have differences too. “I thought Chinese and Korean people were similar in some ways,” said my friend Ji-Hyun in perfect Chinese, “but I was wrong. In ancient times the Chinese used to take their shoes off before entering a house. They dont do that anymore, but Korean people still do! I keep getting that wrong even though Ive been here for five years!”Luckily, whether we take our shoes off or not, or leave unnecessary tips, the world still runs perfectly. In my opinion, cultural differences should simply be seen as a way of making life interesting. Imagine how boring it would be if we all did everything in exactly the same way! Learning to understand and respect differences is, after all, what life is all about.Living with differencesThemePeople will meet a (66) culture while living in a foreign country, which can make them feel (67) .(68) of foreign friends in ChinaAubin couldnt understand why waiters (69) to accept the tips he gave them after meals in restaurants.Julia felt really (70) because no one talked in class except herself and thought that if the students (71) her, they should answer her questions.Ji-Hyun believed there were some (72) between Chinese and Korean people and thought it was wrong that people (73) their shoes when they entered a house.ConclusionWe should (74) cultural differences as a way to make life interesting. We would be (75) with life if we did everything in the same way.第五部分:根据句意,单词填空,使其符合句意(共30小题,每小题0.5分,满分15分)76.
