When I was introduced to Volunteering Matters, I was particularly interested in the handyperson service. I was a bit nervous though as it was brand new to me. After chatting with the project coordinator, I signed up and went through some initial training, which was really relaxing and enjoyable. In February, I took up the role as a handyperson organizer, which means it is my responsibility to speak to older people who require our service. After that, I assign the job request to the most appropriate volunteers, based on their location and skills. It usually takes about one hour per evening to plete my task.Having done this role now for six months, I have learned a great deal and am very proud to be a part of this project. I have seen first-hand how important it is to help older people, who would really struggle without our service. I really feel that I am doing my bit to help others and give something back. It has helped me to believe in myself and I have learned some new skills, which I didnt believe I could ever do, especially my munication, organization and interpersonal skills. Its great to be able to build a relationship with our clients and volunteers and it is also a lot of fun. My confidence has increased and I absolutely love my volunteer organizer role. Most recently, I have also been helping the project coordinator with administration tasks and publicity(宣传) work for the service, which means I am improving my IT knowledge as well. It means a lot that I have received help and support from Volunteering Matters. At the same time, I am helping the organization and its beneficiaries(受益者) too.1.Why did the author turn to Volunteering Matters?A. To meet new friends.B. To make more money.C. To make himself a better person.D. To get rid of depression and anxiety.2.After receiving some training, the author felt _.A. a little tenseB. pleasedC. anxiousD. proud3.Paragraph 4 is mainly about_.A. what the author is supposed to doB. the reason why the author volunteersC. how this project benefits the authorD. why the author loves the volunteer organizer role4.It can be inferred from the text that the author thinks_.A.it is worthwhile to do voluntary workB. the old are badly in need of volunteersC. volunteering will leads to employmentD. being a volunteer requires IT knowledgePassage 2As a person who always please others, your typical response to any need or request is yes. Much of the time, this strategy may work reasonably well. You feel good about helping others. And, for the most part, other people like you. But in some ways by doing something like this, not only do you want to please people, but you feel excessively guilty and anxious when you cant. You fear the disapproval of others. You dont want to make any trouble. And having someone angry at you can be pletely terrifying.Because it doesnt seem OK to let anyone down, you say yes to more tasks and mitments(许诺) than you can handle. This can lead to overwork, being angry, and being extremely tired. And you may eventually end up letting other people down because you are too overextended to keep all of those mitments. If you are hearing an internal warning, saying, This is wrong. or This is just too much. or Youll regret this later. do yourself a favor and at least listen before immediately saying yes. If you are feeling cautious about saying yes, try to give yourself some time to think carefully and deeply what it will lead to before deciding.Try to distinguish between your desire to be kind, which will usually make you feel peaceful and positive, and the thoughts that lead to fear, guilt, or a sense of pressure. Its great that you have a strong desire to connect with others and to respond to peoples needs. No ones asking you to give that up. But if you are able to say no when it really counts, youll have more time, energy, and focus to really make a positive difference in other peoples lives.1.What does the author say about people used to pleasing others?A. They can receive more approvals and praises.B. They may spread positive energy among the people around them.C. They may get into negative emotions in a way.D. They can reduce the risks of being misunderstood.2.What does the underlined word overextended in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Taking on too much responsibility.B. Having munication frequently.C. Hiding their feelings and weaknesses.D. Offering everything that are required.3.What does the author advise people to do before saying yes?A. Be aware of the people.B. Reflect on the possible effects of the decision.C. Learn to say no to some excessive demands.D. Feel greatly relaxed and calm down pletely.4.Which of the following can best describe the tone of the author?A. Critical.B. Doubtful.C. Objective.D. Positive. 故选A。 people from all walks of life是个固定搭配,意思是“各行各业的人们”;a new Tianjin泛指“一个新天津”,a表示“一”的意思。故选A。 I was looking for something to do in my spare time that would also help to increase my skills and confidence可知,作者做这份工作是为了增加自身技能和自信,即使自己成为一个更优秀的人。 I signed up and went through some initial training, which was really relaxing and enjoyable可知,作者经过训练后,感觉很放松、很开心,因此选B。 It has helped me to believe in myself and I have learned some new skills可知,本段主要讲述这份工作给作者带来的好处, 故选C。
