Warming up by introducing Hello, class, today were going to learn Unit 1. This unit is about a famous author named Jane Austen and her novels. Now I will introduce the author and the novel briefly to you. Listen to me carefully please.Jane Austens life and backgroundJane Austen lived a quiet life. She was born on December 16th, 1775. Jane was the youngest child in the family of eight children. Her father was a country minister in Steventon, a small Hampshire town in South central England. Her mother was a housewife and interested in literature and could write stories and poems. Miss Austen attended several schools until the end of her formal education, when she was only eleven. Then she was educated by the model of “country ministers daughter” at home. Jane Austens lively intelligence and keen interest in human relationship appeared to have been shared by all her family. As a teenager, she showed wit and liveliness in her writings. Her stories were shared by all her family.Jane Austen enjoys high prestige in literature. The qualities of her style - the delicate precision, brisk description which often marks subtlety, the lucidity and vitality and ironic wit - won her great fame as one of the best English novelists. Her inner humor, skillful writing and her own personality made her works attract numerous readers. One of her representatives, Pride and Prejudice was probably the most popular of her finished novels. From this novel, we can have a plete and objective knowledge of Jane Austen.2. What type of people did she write about?Keys for reference: Jane Austen focused on middle-class provincial life with humor and understanding. She depicted the life of minor landed gentry, country clergymen and their families, in which marriage mainly determined womens social status. Jane Austens six plete adult novels were written in two distinct periods. In her first period, from 1796 to 1798, she wrote Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), and Northanger Abbey (1818). These novels did not find a publisher for several years after their position. Austens second period of productivity began in 1811 after the publication of Sense and Sensibility. She produced in quick succession her last three novels: Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1816), and Persuasion (1818). In all of Austens novels her heroines are ultimately married.2. Talking about one of her novels Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice is the best known of Jane Austens works and the most widely read in China through translation. It tells of the love story between a rich, proud young man Darcy and the beautiful and intelligent Elizabeth Bennet. At a party, Darcy, with his pride and seemingly cold disposition(气质), makes a bad impression on the local people. He slights Elizabeth and hurts her dignity by refusing to dance with her. Their relationship is worsened by Wickhams ill words to Darcy. He describes Darcy as a cold-blooded, bad guy. In their later meetings, however, Darcy begins to admire the girl in spite of himself, but Elizabeth, on account of her prejudice against him, tries to bring down his pride and has the satisfaction of refusing him a dance too. Things dont get well until Elizabeth has read after a sincere letter from Darcy. Elizabeth finally recognizes Wickhams true face and reveals that it is the arrogant Darcy who has arrangedher younger sister Lydias marriage and saves the reputation of the Bennet family. As the title indicates Austen intends to create two vivid portraits out of the hero and heroine, with the former typifying “pride” and latter “prejudice”. And, the author seems to say, if to form good relationships is our main task in life, we must first have good judgment. Our first impressions, according to Jane Austen, are usually wrong, as is shown here by those of Elizabeth. In theprocess of judging others, Elizabeth finds out something about herself: her blindness, partiality(偏见) , prejudice and absurdity(荒谬). On the other hand, Darcy, too, learns about other people and himself. In the end, Darcy and Elizabeth bee engaged, as false pride is humbled and prejudice dissolved(消失), and love prevails. He told of different men and of strange civilizations(文明), broken up by long dark ages in between . In his view, what is called the present time is no more than a moment in human history and we are just the First Men. In 2,000 million years from now there will be the Eighteenth or Last Men.However, most of our ideas about the future are really very short-sighted. Perhaps we can see some possibilities for the next fifty years. But the next hundred? The next thousand? The next million? Thats much more difficult. When men and women lived by hunting 50,000 years ago, how could they even begin to picture modern life? Yet to men of 50,000 years from now , we may seem as primitive(原始的)in our ideas as the Stone-Age hunters do to us . Perhaps they will spend their days gollocking to make new spundels, or struggling with their ballalators through the cribe, These words, which I have just made up, have to stand for things and ideas that we simply cant think of.So why bother even to try imagining life far in the future? Here are two reasons. First unless we remember how short our own lives are pared with the whole human history, we are likely to think our own interests are much more important than they really are. If we make the earth a poor place to live on because we are careless or greedy(贪婪) or quarrelsome, our grand-children will not bother to think of excuses for us.Second, by trying to escape from present interests and imagine life far in the future, we may arrive at quite fresh ideas that we can use ourselves. For example, if we imagine that in the future men may give up farming, we can think of trying it now. So set you imagination free when you think about the future.1. A particular mention made of Stapledons book in the opening paragraph _.A. serves as a description of human history B. serves an introduction to the discussionC. shows a disagreement of views D. shows the popularity of the book2. The text discusses men and women 50,000 years ago and 50,000 years from now in order to show that _.A. human history is extremely long B. life has changed a great dealC. it is useless to plan for the next 50 years D. it is difficult to tell what will happen in the future3. Spundels and ballalators are used in the text to refer to _.A. tools used in farming B. ideas about modern life C. unknown things in the future D. hunting skills in the Stone Age4. According to the writer of the text , imagining the future will _.A. serve the interests of the present and future generationsB. enable us to better understand human historyC. help us to improve farming D. make life worth living Keys: 1-4 BDCAStep 5: Homework1. Study the new words in the text and spell them correctly. You may have a dictation with your desk mate.2. Finish the exercises on page 11 in reading practice.
