These drivers know too well how bad the traffic can be. “Therere too many cars, and you cant move around a lot.”Professor Cyrus Shahabi also knows about traffic jams. He lives more than 65 kilometers from his office at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He is always late even with the help of a navigation (导航) system. He decided to develop a program called ClearPath for that. He says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house. “Whats unique is that we use a lot of data thats currently bee available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict whats going to happen in front of you when you leave home.”Professor Shahabi says his system does more than just respond to current traffic conditions. With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give the fastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road. Professor Shahahi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities.“I always thought that Los Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediately use this.”Professor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with panies that already have navigation systems, such as Google and Apple. 1Drivers in Los Angeles were mentioned in order to _.Ashow care for themBintroduce their lifeCsolve traffic problemsDraise the topic答案:D推理判断题。 2What is unique about ClearPath?AIt can use a lot of information all over the world.BIt can ensure that you will never be late for work.CIt helps drivers see clearly what happens on the road.DIt helps drivers know the road conditions ahead of time. 根据第四段“Whats unique is that we use a lot of data thats currently bee available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict whats going to happen in front of you when you leave home.” 3The underlined word “hits” in the fifth paragraph probably means _.Ahave an accidentBget toCturn left or rightDcollect traffic data答案:B词义猜测题。 由此推断,before the driver hits the road意为“在司机上路之前”,hit意为“到达”。故选B项。4Whats Professor Shahabis attitude toward his invention?ADisappointed.BProud.COptimistic.DWorried. BDrunken drivingsometimes called Americas socially accepted form of murderhas bee a national epidemic (传染病). Every hour of every day about three Americans on average are killed by drunken drivers, adding up to an incredible 250, 000 over the past decade.A drunken driver is usually defined as one with a 0.10 blood content or roughly three beers, glasses of wine or shots of whisky drunk within two hours. Heavy drinking used to be an acceptable part of the American man image and judges were tolerant (宽容的) in most courts, but the drunken slaughter (残杀) has recently caused so many well publicized tragedies, especially involving young children, that public opinion is no longer so tolerant.Twenty states have raised the legal drinking to 21, reversing a trend in the 1960s to reduce it to 18. After New Jersey lowered it to 18, the number of people killed by 18 to 20yearold drivers more than doubled, so the state recently upped it back to 21.Reformers, however, fear raising the drinking age will have little effect unless acpanied by educational programs to help young people to develop “responsible attitudes” about drinking and teach them to resist (抵抗) pressure to drink.Tough new laws have led to increased arrests and tests and, in many areas already, to a marked decline in fatalities (灾祸). Some states are also penalizing (处罚) bars for serving customers too many drinks. A tavern in Massachusetts was fined for serving six or more double brandies to a customer who was “obviously intosxicated (喝醉的)” and later drove off the road, killing a nineyearold boy.As the fatalities continue to occur daily in every state, some Americans are even beginning to speak well of the 13 years of national prohibition (禁止) of alcohol that began in 1919, what President Hover called the “noble experiment”. They forget that legal prohibition didnt stop drinking, but encouraged political corruption (腐败) and organized crime. As with the booming drug trade generally, there is no easy solution.5Drunken driving has bee a major problem in America because _.Amost Americans are heavy drinkersBAmericans are now less shocked by road accidentsCaccidents attract too much publicityDdrinking is a socially accepted habit in America答案:D主旨大意题。文章开头作者即指出,酒后驾驶已经成了美国一种“尚可忍受的谋杀”,又在第二段中说,“Heavy drinking used to be an acceptable part of the American man image.” D。6Statistics issued in New Jersey suggested that _.Amany drivers have not reached the legal driving ageByoung drivers were often bad driversCmore people took no drinking in the 1960sDthe legal drinking age should be raised答案:D细节理解题。 D。7Laws recently introduced in some states have _.Areduced the number of convictionsBresulted in fewer serious accidentsCprevented bars from serving drunken customersDspecified the amount drivers can drink答案:B细节理解题。文章第五段开头说,“Tough new laws have led to increased arrests and tests and, in many areas already, to a marked decline in fatalities.” B。8The problem of drunken driving is difficult to solve because _.Aalcohol is easily accessibleBdrinking is linked to organized crimeClegal prohibiting has already failedDlegislation alone is not sufficient答案:C细节理解题。 The benefits of keeping a journalIf you want to grow, one important thing you should do is keeping a journal. It may seem simple, but it can make a big difference in your life.I have been keeping journals for years.Writing all the lessons I learn and all the ideas I get has been a habit for me._1_ Here are some benefits you will get by keeping a journal. It prevents you from losing an idea.Have you ever forgotten an idea only to lose it later because you didnt write it down?_2_ But then I developed the habit of writing down every idea that came into my mind as soon as possible. If Im away from my puter, I usually write it down on a piece of paper that I bring wherever I go.I will then transfer the idea to the journal in my puter. It helps you review all the lessons youve learned.By reviewing your journal, you can quickly see the lessons youve learned and the ideas youve forgotten._3_You can use the ideas to propel (鞭策) yourself forward._4_ After keeping a journal for years, you can look back at it and see how far youve gone.Things that were big problems in the past might seem small today. The raw ideas you had in the past might have been realized today. It helps you expand (详述) your ideas. When you try to end up with a sentence to express an idea, you are thinking actively about it._5_At the end, you will expand your ideas.AI often experienced that myself.BIt trains you to express your thoughts.CIt allows you to see your progress over time.DJust use whatever tool you feel affordable with.EThinking actively helps you connect your idea to another idea.FAnd to be honest, I cant imagine what my life would be like without it.GThen you can do whatever necessary to avoid repeating the same mistakes.答案:FAGCE
