The format can press large video content into a relatively small document while keeping its quality. They named it MP4 mainly because it was regarded as an update from MP3. MP3 only presses audio documents. After MP3 players became popular, some technology panies started thinking about making videos that fit into peoples pockets. In fact; most PDAs and some hand-held mobile phones already have video function. Since then, manufacturers worldwide have joined in the rush. Among them are big panies like Sony, Microsoft and Apple, although they dont call their products MP4 players. Sony called its product with video function the PMP (Portable Media Player). Microsoft prefers PMC (Personal Media Centre), while some others call the gadgets PVPs (Personal Video Player). But, basically, these products all have the same core function-playing video content. An MP4 player is not just an MP3 player with an extra video function. In fact, MP4 players must be able to play, record, and transform large video content. That requires an overall change in both hardware and software. Storage must be enlarged, display strengthened, speakers powered, software upgraded, and appearance redesigned. Since video function enriched the players, other functions such as games, cameras can be added. Sonys PSP (Play Station Portable) was originally built for video games. In this case, PMP or PMC is more accurate a term than MP4.56. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. MP4 can press large video content into a relatively small document while the picture of the video is not so clear. B. Every product with video function launched by big panies is called MP4. C. It is only with an extra video function that makes an MP4 differ from an MP3. D. PMP or PMC has more functions besides video function.57. What does the last sentence in-the passage mean? A. PMP or PMC is not called MP4 players because they can not play video content.B. PMP or PMC is not called MP4 players because they have the same core functionplaying audio content.C. PMP or PMC is not called MP4 players because they have other function besides playing video content.D. PMP or PMC is not called MP4 players because the manufacturers regard them as outdated procducts.58. The passage tells us what MP4 players are except that _. A. MP4 must be able to play, record and transform large video content. B. MP4 must have more space to store documents. C. Software has to be required to be changed instead of hardware. D. Display of MP4 is better than that of MP3.59. Whats the best title of the passage? A. MP4s Update MP3s B. Whatre PMP and PMC? C. MP3 Is Outdated D. MP4s ing Out B Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are over concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such unfortable feelings must affect people unfavourably. A persons self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person themselves has a deep affect on all areas of their lives. Shy people, who have low self-esteem( 自尊), are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing the right thing . Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑). They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: Youre just saying that to make me feel good, I know its not true. It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be pletely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overe shyness with determination. It is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths, for example, not fair for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths, for example, not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have to be realistic. Living on the i.mpossible leads to absence of inferiority. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it bees to live up to our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.60.The first paragraph is mainly about _. A. the thoughts of shy peopleB. the cause of shyness C. the effect of shyness on peopleD. the questions in the minds of shy people61. According to the writer, self-awareness is _. A. harmful to people B. a weak point of shy people C. the cause of unhappiness D. a good characteristic62. What is the shy peoples reaction to praise ? A. They are pleased by itB. They feel it is not true C. They are very sensitive to itD. They feel they are worthy of it63. We can learn from the passage that shyness can _. A. help us to live up to our full developmentB. enable us to understand ourselves better C. block our chances for a successful lifeD. have nothing to do with lack of self-esteem C Once I mentioned the story of a friend getting something made for me to give my daughter as a present, and then not letting me pay her back. Writing about that made me think about the problem of municating feelings, particularly in cross-cultural situations. Let me explain. If I say to a fellow English-speaker , 1 know how you feel, what I am actually saying is that I can imagine myself in the same position, and therefore can imagine how I would feel. But my friend could perfectly correctly reply, No you dont! you cant. in truth we can municate how strongly we feel, but we cannot municate exactly what we feel. But if we e from the same linguistic and cultural background, the match can be closeenough. Culture and language cannot be separated, and 1 think that we have the feelings that are recognized in our culture and therefore represented in our langrage. One might say that we feel the things that our language allows us to express. So when it es to trying to explain feelings to someone of a different mother tongue, the difficulties are huge. I could not explain to my friend how I felt about her not letting me repay her because Chinese culture, it seems, does not recognize the same feelings on such occasions. She could understand the words that I was using, but could not understand what I was trying to say. Some time ago, I was going up in the lift, and a colleague with whom I merely have a nodding acquaintance was offering round some sweetmeat. 1 knew that I really could not eat it, so I refused politely, only to be told that I was making her lose face. I have no idea how serious the colleague was being. I sincerely hope that her ment was more of the nature of a standard response in that kind of situation. Causing someone to lose face is a serious social mistake. We have to do all we can to learn the types of situation in which it happens, and to try to avoid them. But we can only know about losing face, we cant feel losing face, as the term is merely a literal translation of Chinese, not onethat is native to English.64. What does the author intend to express in Para.2? A. The authors friend does not understand English. B. The author and her friend can municate feelings with each other. C. The authors friend cant understand the real meaning of the author. D. The authors friend feels insulted if other people know how she feels.65. What does the author mean by saying the match can be close enough(Para.3,1ine 1)? A. There can be some petition between them.B. They can make a perfect couple. C. They can share similar opinions and thoughts.D. They are even in a match.66. According to the author, it is _to explain feelings to someone of a different language. A. very difficult B. a little bit difficultC. not difficult at all D. impossible67. This passage is focused on _.A. cultural differences between the east and the westB. how to avoid making people lose faceC. the importance of ones cultural backgroundD. how to be acquainted with Chinese cultureD Learning disabilities are very mon. They affect perhaps 10 percent of all children. Four times as many boys as girls have learning disabilities. Since about 1970, new research has helped brain scientists understand these problems better. Scientists now know there are many different kinds of learning disabilities and that they are caused by many different things. There is no longer any question that all learning disabilities result from differences in the way the brain is organized. You cannot look at a child and tell if he or she has a learning disability. There is no outward sign of the disorder. So some researchers began looking at the brain itself to learn what might be wrong. In one study, researchers examined the brain of the learning-disabled person who had died in an accident. They found two unusual things. One has something to do with cells in the left side of the brain, which control language. These cells normally are white. In the learning-disabled person, however, these cells were gray. The researchers also found that many of the nerve cells were not in a line the way they should have been. The nerve cells were mixed together. The study was carried out under the guidance of Norman Geschwind, an early expert on learning disabilities. Doctor Geschwind thought that learning disabilities resulted mainly from problems in the left side of the brain. He believed this side of the brain failed to develop normally. Probably, he said, nerve cells there did not connect as they should. So the brain was like an electrical device in which the wires were crossed. Frank Duffy experimented with this technique at Childrens Hospital Medical Center in Boston. Doctor Duffy found large differences in the brain activity of normal children and those with reading problems. The differences appeared throughout the brain. Doctor Duffy said his research proves that reading disabilities result from damage to a wide area of the brain, not just the left side.68. Scientists found that the brain cells of a learning-disabled person differ from those of a normal person in _.A. size and shape B. color and shapeC. size and arrangement D. color and arrangement69. It is NOT mentioned in the passage that learning disabilities may result from_.A. the unknown area of the brainB. damage to a wide area of the brainC. unusual organization of brain cells D. problems in the left side of the brain70. Doctor Duffy believed that the problem of learning disabilities _.A. was limited to the right side of the brainB.
