It all appears to boil down to the length of structures called telomereswhich protect the DNA on the chromosomes(染色体), the researchers from Kings College London wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Many studies have shown telomeres get shorter over time, suggesting the cells are ageing or dying. The study, which extracted a DNA sample from their volunteers, found people who exercised more each week had longer telomeres. Exercise lowers the risk of a range of problems such as heart disease, diabetes(糖尿病) and cancer, the researchers said. “It is not just walking around the block. It is really working up a sweat,” said Tim Spector, a genetic epidemiologist(流行病学家) who led the study, in a telephone interview. The study found people who exercised vigorously 3 hours each week had longer telomeres and they were 9 years biologically younger than people who did under 15 minutes. Spectors team, who also adjusted for body weight, smoking, economic status and physical activity at work, also said moderate exercise for 1-1/2 hours each week provided a four-year advantage. The reason why exercise has this effect is not clear but we believe physical activity somehow defends against the natural process.1. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A. It can be inferred from the passage that .A. peoples health is decided by their body weight and economic statusB. scientists have known why exercise affects the ageing processC. the more violently one exercises, the healthier one getsD. the longer telomeres one has, the more slowly one gets oldB Now scientists believe that global warming affects hibernating animals, causing them to wake up earlier. While this may seem a little concern, it is in fact a significant environmental problem. The shortened hibernation period could actually lead to significant declines in the populations of several species Some of the first concrete evidence of the phenomenon came from Colorado, where researchers at the Rocky Mountain Biological lab have been observing marmot(旱獭)hibernation behavior since the 1970s. In the early days of their studies, marmots generally hibernated several weeks into the month of May. Nowadays, however, temperatures in the area have risen by 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit, and the marmots are waking up about a month earlier. At least the marmots are still hibernating. Several other animals have not been hibernating at all recently. Brown bears in the Spanish Cantabrian Mountains did not hibernate last year. In parts of the United States, chipmunks(花鼠)also skipped the hibernation period. The bears seem to have survived without losing many individuals. The chipmunks, however, were not so lucky. Many of the animals died of starvation during the winter. The problem with animals waking up early, or skipping hibernation altogether, lies with the creatures metabolism(新陈代谢). When an animal hibernates, their metabolism drops significantly. The animals heart rate slows, and they require very little energy to live. When the animals awake from their winter slumber, their metabolism returns to normal. But while their metabolism may be as active as it was before hibernation, food sources arent as available as they were before. A marmot may wake up when temperatures get warmer, thinking its spring, but plants will not have gotten the amount of sun they need to signal their spring period of growth. So until the plants grow, the marmots have no reliable food source. Many scientists believe the problem will continue to get worse. In addition to changes in hibernation patterns, some believe that other animals will also begin to change their migration patterns or begin to give birth earlier. For many biologists, thats a scary prospect. Terry Root, an animal expert at Stanford University, said: “I do think what we will be facing is the extinction of many species.6. What is the viewpoint of the writer?A. Global warming will continue to get worse as time goes on.B. Global warming will lead to shortened hibernation of some animals.C. Because more and more animal species skip hibernation now.10. Terry Root holds a(n) _ attitude towards the future of animals.A. optimisticB. doubtfulC. pessimisticD. sensitiveCRock and roll music developed in the United States in the early nineteen-fifties. It was based on the music called rhythm and blues that was performed by African American musicians.Early rock and roll singers developed their own kinds of music. Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan were the most popular rock and roll musicians in the early 1960s. All were American. Then, in 1964, a new rock and roll group from England invaded America: the Beatles. Some people say the Beatles music shook America like an earthquake. The Beatles changed rock and roll forever. Their early songs were influenced by American rock and roll musicians, including Chuck Berry. But the Beatles looked different and sounded different from any musical group before them. The Beatles released their first album in the United States in 1964, when all of the top five records in America were by the Beatles. In 1967, they released an album called “Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.” It was one of the first “concept” albums. That is, all the songs were linked by a mon story or idea. The popularity of the Beatles led the way for more rock and roll bands from England to bee popular in America. The Rolling Stones was the most important of these bands. The Rolling Stones is one of the few groups from the 1960s that is still performing and recording today. In 1965, the group recorded one of its most famous songs, “Satisfaction”.The musical instrument most linked to rock and roll is the guitar. Experts say Jimi Hendrix was one of the most influential guitar players in rock and roll during the late 1960s. His “Purple Haze” was liked by many people.By the 1970s, rock and roll music became known as rock music. It expanded into many new forms. For example, there was country rock, hard rock, acid rock, and heavy metal rock. Punk rock, jazz rock, and glitter rock. In the middle 1970s, experts say rock music regained some of the energy of early rock and roll. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band became popular with their album “Born to Run”. Springsteens music was like the lively rock and roll music of the early nineteen-sixties. Many of his songs were about social issues. He sang about the effects of unemployment and the war in Vietnam. 11. Shopping when not hungry, sticking to a grocery list, and following a few simple rules will cut down the grocery bill.Shoppers should visit the grocery store on a full stomach by scheduling their trip immediately after a large meal. If thats not possible, they should find something healthy to eat while preparing a grocery list. Most shoppers are less tempted to buy extras when they are not bothered by hunger. Although having a list and sticking to it is the most important factor in saving money, shoppers must prepare lists wisely in order to save. A carefully planned list should include in-season produce and any items on sale or discounted through coupons. Many special buys are announced through the local newspapers, so buying the “grocery issue” is worth the investment. However, its important to remember that many newer, more expensive products first offered through coupons may not yield enough savings for shoppers to give up the product they usually buy. Now that the shopper has pleted the grocery list, its time to the store. However, no preparations are plete without a pocket calculator or piece of paper and pencil to figure costs.Once at the store, the shopper who wants to save money should follow a few more rules. The shopper should not stay longer than necessary, because bills go up each minute the shopper is in the store. So, setting a time limit and a cost limit can hold down the bill. Of course, the shopper should stick strictly to the shopping list and resist impulses to buy additional items. If the grocery list is a short one, some shoppers resist impulse buying by using the small hand-held basket instead of the roomy grocery cart.1. What does the first paragraph tell us?
