So it came as no surprise to learn that researchers believe crying and laughing come from the same part of the brain. Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering that so, too, does crying. Whatever it takes for us to reduce pressure is important to our emotional (情感的) health, and crying seems to study found that 85 percent of women and 73 percent of men report feeling better after crying. Besides, tears attract help from other people. Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendly and they are more ready to provide support and comfort. Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we dont even know we re very sad until we cry. We learn about our emotions through Crying, and then we can deal with them. Just as crying can be healthy, not crying - holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering - can be bad for physical health, Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illnesses. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, dont fight it. Its a natural and healthy -emotional response (反应).25. A New Scientific DiscoveryC It seems like just yesterday that you had to persuade your daughter to bathe. But then she turned 11 and started spending hours in the bathroom and looking at her image in every mirror she passes. She is concerned about her looks. What happened? And is it healthy? As kids approach their teen years, it is common and natural for them to become more interested in appearance - their own and others. Their bodies are going through some big changes as they grow and go through adolescence. As teens change physically they become more aware of how they look. Growth and adolescence affect more than a teens outward appearancebody image is affected, too. Having a healthy body image means that most of the feelings, ideas, and opinions about the body and appearance are positive. It means accepting and appreciating their bodies and feeling mostly satisfied with their appearances. Developing a healthy body image happens over time. It can be influenced by experiences and shaped by the opinions of others and by cultural messages. Preteens and teens often compare their looks with others or with media images of the “right” way to look. In cultures in which looks seem to matter so much and ideal images are so unrealistic, it is all too common to be dissatisfied with some aspects of appearance. Being criticized for appearances can be particularly hurtful at this age. As teens try to have different looks, parents can help by being supportive, providing positive messages, and encouraging other qualities that help judge the importance of looks correctly. Keep in mind its important for preteens or teens to eat healthy food, limit junk food, and get plenty of physical activities, but its not advisable for them to diet. Being overly concerned about weight, limiting the amount of food, or exercising too much can be signs of an eating disorder. Talk to your doctor if you notice any of these signs in your kids.Still, parents may feel upset when looks seem to matter so much to kids. Its important to encourage teens to take pride in their appearances and pay attention to the deeper qualities that matter more.28. People who keep a regular sleep routine have a lower body fat than those who keep irregular sleep hours, says a new study. Led by Bruce Bailey, professor of exercise science, researchers followed 300 female college students aged 19 to 26, who were given activity trackers(跟踪器) to watch their movements and activities, including waking and sleeping times . Researchers also measured their body composition (成分)before and after the one-week study period. What the researchers found: Body fat varied with sleep quantity. Women who slept between 8 and 8.5 hours a night had the lowest body fat. While those who slept less than 7 hours or over 9 hours had higher body fat. High quality sleep was associated with lower body fat while poor sleep was connected with higher body fat. Waking and going to sleep at the same time every day was most strongly linked with lower body fat. The difference in body weight was greater with more variation(变化) in sleep pattern. Women whose sleep patterns varied by 90 minutes a night had higher body fat than those whose sleep patterns varied by 60 minutes or less on average. The study followed up on a body of research conducted over the last few years that ties quality and quantity of sleep to weight loss and better weight control. While researchers dont know exactly how sleep schedules affect body weight and fat, other studies have shown that sleep has an effect on physical activity, appetite(胃口), and the hormones(荷尔蒙)that control metabolism(新陈代谢), and the signals that tell us were full.32.
