资源描述
Unit 4 Sharing. .阅读理解 Job sharing refers to the situation in which two people divide the responsibility of one full-time job. The two people willingly act as part-time workers, enough hours between them to fulfill the duties of a full-time worker. If they each work half the job, for example, they each receive 50 per cent of the jobs wages, its holidays and its other benefits. Job sharing differs from conventional part-time work in that it occurs mainly in the more highly skilled and professional areas, which require higher levels of responsibility and employee commitment. Job sharing should not be confused with the term work sharing, which refers to increasing the number of jobs by reducing the number of hours of each existing job, thus offering more positions to the growing number of unemployed people. Job sharing, by contrast, is not designed to address unemployment problems; its focus, rather, is to provide well-paid work for skilled workers and professionals who want more free time for other activities. As would be expected, most job sharers are women. A survey carried out in 2010 by Britains Equal Opportunities Commission showed that 78 percent of sharers were female, the majority of whom were between 20 and 40 years of age. Subsequent studies have come up with similar results. Many of these women were reentering the job market after having had children, but they chose not to seek part-time work because it would have meant lower status. Job sharing also offered an acceptable shift back into full-time work after a long absence. The necessity of close cooperation when sharing a job with another person makes the actual work quite different from conventional one-position jobs. However, to ensure a greater chance that the partnership will succeed, each person needs to know the strengths, weaknesses and preferences of his or her partner before applying for a position. Moreover, there must be a fair division of both routine tasks and interesting ones. In sum, for a position to be job-shared well, the two individuals must be well matched and must treat each other as equals.1.In what way is work sharing different from job sharing?A.Work sharing requires more working hours.B.Work sharing is aimed at creating more jobs.C.Work sharing provides a more satisfactory salary.D.Work sharing depends on the employers decision.2.According to Paragraph 4, young mothers preferred job sharing to conventional part-time work mainly because_.A.they sought higher social statusB.they were over ideal working agesC.they had difficulty finding full-time jobsD.they had to take care of both work and family3.In job sharing the partners should_.A.enjoy equal social statusB.have similar work experienceC.keep in touch with each otherD.know each other very well4.The main purpose of the passage is to_.A.recommend job sharing to womenB.discuss how to provide more jobsC.describe job sharing in generalD.compare job sharing with work sharingAmericans use many expressions with the word “dog”. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. 5 However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dogs life, describes a person who has an unhappy existence. Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. 6 They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.7 This means that even the most unimportant person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.8 People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. 9 A. Still, people say every dog has its day.B. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.C. Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways.D. Dogs are their best friend and they are loyal to people.E. There are many other expressions waiting for you to explore.F. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs.G. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care.完形填空Two extremes in lifeIt has been so bitterly cold here in Pennsylvania.
