Here are some suggestions on destinations you can hit on your next vacation. Yogyakarta, Indonesia Many people go to Yogyakarta to watch the sunrise in Borobudur, the largest Buddhist(佛教的)monument in the world. But Yogyakarta has much more to see. There are endless rice fields, many small villages and plenty of roads, ready to be explored. You can also visit the famous Hindu temple Prambanan. Luang Prabang, Laos Walking in the streets of Luang Prabang, you will be approached by travel agents offering package tours. Say no and enter the first stop where there is a motorbike to rent and a good map to sell. It is much more fun to tour by yourself. You can take your time and go to Kuang Si and Tad Sae, two amazing waterfalls. The road cuts through forests and mountains, offering you surprising landscape along the way. Chiang Mai, Thailand Chiang Mai is right in the middle of the highest mountains of Thailand, so its not surprising that the citys surroundings display amazing natural beauty. Forests, strawberry fields and rivers are all around you. Another good option is to climb 9 miles up the mountain to visit the holy temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of the most famous temples in the city. Lake Maninjau, Indonesia It just takes several hours to tour the whole Lake Maninjau, the huge lake formed by a volcano crater(火山口)in Sumatra, Indonesia. Around the lake, there is nothing but small fishermens villages, rice fields and schools, and the road is never busy. Get ready to see many smiles and curious faces.21. If you go to Yogyakarta, you can _. A. watch some famous waterfalls B. see many smiles and curious faces C. visit the largest Buddhist monument D. experience a very busy city life in Asia22. What advice does the author give you if you are taking a trip to Luang Prabang? A. Ask travel agents for information. B. Avoid shopping in the local shop. C. Travel with someone else. D. Turn down package tours.23. Where should you go if youre interested in the temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep? A. Yogyakarta. B. Luang Prabang. C. Chiang Mai. D. Lake Maninjau. B A friend asked me if I would join her in a 5km marathon(马拉松). My first reaction was “What? A 5km marathon? Are you kidding?” I am a try-anything-at-least-once kind of girl, even if I end up regretting it later. It sounded like a 5km marathon might have been one of those “regretted it later” things, but it was not! I signed up for (报名参加)the 5km marathon. The marathon benefited a local charity and it meant that you would help a local organization while you had fun. This was a win-win event for me. The 5km marathon seemed fun and it was like nothing I had ever done. We arrived early in the morning to line up for the race and there was music from a cool stage. People were throwing colorful balloons around and the atmosphere was telling of a fun period. The staff let runners go in waves, groups of about 1000 people. Before letting them run, they counted down. You could hear them shouting 1098 So exciting! When we were about to run next, we ended up being in the front row. We were getting pounded with colored powder and loved every second of it. We counted down and ran! I, together with other four kids, didnt have much time to train. The good news was that I was not alone. A lot of people walked. Some walked fast. Some walked slowly, but they still walked. I felt not so bad after all. The best part was that I became more active and had fun while I was doing it. When we arrived at the destination, we were greeted by staff handing out colored packets. If you are considering getting more active and experiencing a 5km marathon without the pressure of winning, this is the run to sign up for. You will be so glad you did.24. What do we know about the author? A. She often regrets what she did. B. She doesnt like taking exercise. C. She likes trying something new. D. She always wants to win a game.25. C. she didnt give up and won first place D. she ran fast and got a colored packet.27. What is the authors attitude towards the 5km marathon? A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive D. Cautious CThe Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and entertainment. We can find new recipes on the Internet or advice on staying healthy. We can even use it to learn a new language. We can use the Internet to keep in contact with family and friends and stay in touch with issues we care about. The list goes on and on. So, there may be no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure in an unlikely group-teenagers. So, try to be a responsible guardian(监护人). The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week online were more likely to have high blood pressure. High blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels work too hard. Over time, this extra strain increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke. High blood pressure can also cause heart and kidney disease. It is also closely linked to some form of dementia(痴呆), or a brain disease. The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. It involved 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old. One hundred thirty-four of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. Researchers say the study is the first one to connect heavy web use with high blood pressure. Other research has connected that heavy Internet use with health problems including anxiety, depression and obesity. The lead researcher of the study is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. For the purpose of the study, she explains, teens considered heavy Internet users were online on average 25 hours a week. It is important for teens to take regular breaks from their computers or smart phones and to do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents limit their childrens use of the Internet to two hours a day, five days a week. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, 70 million, or 29%, of American adults have high blood pressure. The CDC estimates that high blood pressure costs the United States 46 billion each year.28. The author mainly wants to tell us _. A. how to prevent high blood pressure. B. too much Internet use may be bad for teenagers. C. its necessary for teenagers to avoid the Internet. D. heavy Internet use will worsen teenagers memory.29. The first paragraph of the text is used to _. A. introduce the topic B. analyze the causes C. offer some opinions D. make some suggestions.30. According to Casssidy-Bushrow, teenagers use of the Internet should be limited to_. A. 25 hours a week B. two hours a week C. ten hours a week D. five hours a week31. The text is mainly intended for _. A. parents B. teachers C. web-designers D. students DAdopting a new pet should be an exciting and rewarding experience. But just as all families are different, so are all pets. You need to learn what to consider before you find your new family member. All pets require their owners time. Kirsten Theisen, director of pet care issues, says how much time they have to give is the top thing that they should consider when they want to adopt a pet. “If you adopt an 8-year-old cat, she is not going to need the same amount of care as a 9-week-old-dog,”says Theisen.Like finding the perfect partner, you want a pet that reflects your interests and activity levels. “Particularly if you want to adopt a dog, consider activity levels in the household,” says Theisen. “If you are a couch potato(老泡在电视机面前的人), or if you are a homebody, look for a pet that matches that activity level.”Some dogs, like terriers, can be loud and noisy and demand a more active lifestyle and room to be outside. They might not fit as well in apartments as more sedentary pets. The Humane Society of the United States suggests potential owners search for information on the Internet and talk to other pet owners when considering what kind of pet works well with their home environment. Some unusual pets, like tortoises(乌龟), have long life spans, which means they will probably outlive dogs and cats-and even their human owners. They can also grow to be much larger than they were when they first came to live with you. Owners should accept the fact that they need to continue to provide room for these animals and also prepare for the animals futures.Theisen encourages families with children to adopt a pet. If parents teach children loving pet care, the lessons of responsibility will come naturally to children. All animals require daily care. At the very least, there will be days or weeks when children fail to take care of their new pet and the parents have to step in.32. According to Teisen, when people plan to adopt a pet, they should first consider_. A. whether the pet is lovely or not B. whether the pet is active or not C. the money that the pet will cost them D. the amount of time they need to provide33. The underlined word “sedentary” in Para. 4 probably means “_”. A. inactive B. boring C. interesting D. impolite34. Parents should adopt a pet for their children to _. It is not a good idea to adopt unusual pets. B. If you are a quiet person, you should adopt an active pet. C. Pet owners should consider the future of some long-lived pets. D.
