Do you get excited by the idea of falling in love with the man or woman of your dreams? Does watching a romcom or a period drama on TV make you cry? Or are you someone who thinks romance is based on an idealized view of reality that doesnt really exist? Well, you could be right!Im no romantic and more of a realist taking a more practical approach to love maybe thats why I never had many girlfriends! But if you really are expecting the kind of love that makes your heart beat fast with happiness you may be disappointed. Our expectation of what romance is, probably originated from the Romantic period - an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe in the 18th Century. The concept of falling in love, getting married and living happily ever after was culturally held ideas formed during this period and still exists today.Of course theres nothing wrong with liking the idea of romance; it makes us feel good but we must be careful not to use it as a standard for our own relationships. This idealizedversion of love leaves out the nitty-gritty of real-life relationships. Theres usually work, finances and other stresses of everyday life to deal with. You cant expect romantic gestures like a bunch of red roses every day there are bills to pay! Many popular love stories end at the point where the characters get together or tie the knot. That puts the focus on finding someone special. But very few show us how to keep that perfect catch over a long period of time. A relationship is hard work. Its frustrating, messy and can be emotionally damaging. If youre still convinced romance isnt dead, how will you ever find it? Historian and TV presenter Lucy Worsley thinks nowadays, any idea of romance is dying because it has become too easy to meet new people via dating apps. She told the BBC the slow exquisite torture of love in Jane Austen novels no longer existed in the age of Grindr and Tinder apps. Perhaps romance is best left to the movies a fantasy that makes us feel good and instead, please concentrate on finding a good and healthy relationship with its ups and downs but one that is full of love.Do you believe romance really exists?53. Because romance which can be appreciated in Jane Austins novels isnt dead.55. Which opinion might the author agree with? A. True lovemeansmarrying someone of your dreams and living happily ever after.B. To some degree, keeping a good and healthy relationship counts more than romance.C. At present romance based on an idealized view of reality does really exist.D. Its more than a romantic gesture to pay daily bills with a bunch of red roses. 56. What is the authors purpose of writing the passage?A. To introduce the origin of romance.B. To show the effects of being romantic or realistic.C. To call on people to seek love and romance bravely and actively.D. To convince people of a slim chance of romance in modern society.CPresident Faust, members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, members of the faculty, proud parents, and, above all, graduates. The first thing I would like to say is thank you. Not only has Harvard given me an extraordinary honor, but the weeks of fear Ive endured at the thought of giving this commencement addresshave made me lose weight. A win-win situation!More than 20 years ago, I was striking an uneasy balance between the ambition I had for myself, and what those closest to me expected of me. I was convinced that the only thing I wanted to do, ever, was write novels. However, my parents, both of whom came from poor backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college, took the view that my overactive imagination would never pay a bill. I would like to make it clear that I do not blame my parents for their point of view. There is a coming-to-an-end date on blaming your parents for guiding you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. What is more, I cannot criticize my parents for hoping that I would never experience poverty. They had been poor themselves. Poverty involves fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand humiliations and hardships. Now I am not dull enough to suppose that because you are young, gifted and well-educated, you have never known heartbreak, hardship or heartache. However, the fact that you are graduating from Harvard suggests that you are not very well-acquainted with failure. Remember the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it. I myself had failed on an epic scale. An exceptionally short-lived marriage, jobless status and a lonely parent. I was the biggest failure I knew. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one area where I believed I truly belonged.I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life. You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all in which case, you fail by default . Failure gave me an inner security that I had never gained by passing examinations. Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more discipline than I had suspected. The knowledge that you have appeared wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity . Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more to me than any qualification I ever earned.Personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement. Your qualifications, your CV, are
