Translation is the process of good understanding of the original language and proper conversion from the original into another language. It is usually composed of the two stages: comprehension and representation. Comprehension of the original through the context clue is crucial. It is necessary for us to make a careful analysis of the grammatical relation and the logical layout of the context. In order to achieve faithfulness of the original, we must pay attention to two points: Firstly, a correct understanding of the exact meaning of the difficult words. The meaning of a word is not gained simply from the dictionary or textbook. The context and collocation have great influence upon the meaning of words. Secondly, we must make a careful analysis of the grammatical structure and the logical layout of the sentence, as well as its relation with other parts of the paragraph. Having settled the problem of understanding of the original, we must try to express it in the target language and have a faithful translation as well as a smooth version. Owing to the fact that English and Chinese are two entirely different languages, “faithfulness” does not mean the complete conformation of the superficial phenomena of the parts of speech and word order. As a rule, we could not add or cross out at random the meaning of the original.
