2009-2010 (the 1st Term) 2009-12-28English Test Paper (A卷) Paper One 试卷一Part I Reading Comprehension (40 points: 2 x 20 = 40)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on proceeds at once. All going well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyones satisfaction. Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look around”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lookout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rack to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands. 1. When a man is buying clothes, _. A. he buys cheap things, regardless of quality B. he chooses things that others recommend C. he does not mind how much he has to pay for the right things D. he buys good quality things, so long as they are not too dear2. What do men care about before they buy the new clothes? A. They care about the size. B. They care about the price. C. They make sure a thing fits before they buy it. D. They make sure that the style is right. 3. What does the passage tell us about women shoppers for clothes? A. They welcome suggestions from anyone. B. Women rarely consider buying cheap clothes. C. Women often buy things without giving the matter proper thought. D. They try to buy clothes for more than its real value. 4. When women go on trying new clothes on, their husbands _. A. stay with them and sit on the chairs waiting B. stay and wait outside the shop C. go window shopping around D. go to buy something for themselves 5. What is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers? A. The fact that men do not try clothes on in a shop. B. Women bargain for their clothes, but men care less about money. C. Women buy more than men. D. The time they take over buying clothes.Passage TwoQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:Many Chinese students who have learnt English more than ten years are still unable to speak English properly and fluently when they encounter a foreigner. They have been able to master the basic language structure and many other things grammatically, but a conversation in English will make them feel uneasy. They are afraid other people might laugh at their mistakes or they think those to whom they are speaking might not understand them. It is not uncommon that many students, who are bad speakers of English, write beautiful and fluent English. This proves perfectly that they do have the ability to organize their ideas in English. The problem is that they do not have enough practice and confidence. Maybe they are afraid of speaking English openly. The best way out, as a result, would be a bit more confidence and practice. No one would laugh at you even though you make some mistakes for they understand English is a foreign language to you. Dont care too much about the small mistakes you may make in your conversation because you can correct them easily if you practice enough. But you do have to take great care to make people understand what you are trying to say. If you keep practicing English all the time, you will surely find that talking with a native speaker is not at all difficult. 6. The problem that most Chinese students have in learning English is that they are unable to _. A. master the basic structure B. write beautiful English C. learn difficult grammar D. talk to a foreigner 7. Many Chinese learners of English are weak at speaking because _ . A. they havent studied long enough B. they cant organize ideas in English C. they dont have enough confidence and practice D. they dont feel like talking to an English speaker 8. The best way to solve this problem, according to this passage, is by _. A. practicing more B. listening more C. learning more grammar D. making more friends 9. The passage implies that _. A. Chinese students usually fear to have a conversation with a foreigner B. foreigners are patient when a Chinese makes mistakes in conversation C. Chinese students should speak more to improve their spoken English D. foreigners are very good and polite listeners 10. In practicing speaking, Chinese students should _. A. pay no attention to the mistakes they make B. take care of their mistakes and try to correct all of them C. focus more on making themselves understood D. care more about the sentence structure and grammar Passage ThreeQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:Why do Westerners love their pets so much, almost as if they were their children? I suppose one reason is that for more than one hundred years many childrens books in England and in America were animal stories. By this we mean stories that gave the animals human names, human voices, human emotions, and even faces that look almost human. Many of these stories taught a moral lesson, like honesty or kindness or hard work. My mother read animal stories to me as a child, and my wife and I read some of the same animal stories to my boys when they were small, and now they read animal stories to their children. Some are the same stories about dogs and cats and rabbits and horses. So children in America grow up with good feelings toward animals. Many families would like to have a purebred dog or cat. That is an animal whose parents come from a single kind of animal. But purebred animals are expensive. And those that are registered with a special dog or cat club are even more expensive since there is a written record of their ancestors for many generations. What often happens is that a familys first pet will come from some friend whose pet has had babies. Or they may get a pet from an animal shelter. Every city and many smaller towns have a humane society which cares for animals that are found and for animals which people no longer want. They try to find the owner of lost pets and to find homes for the others. Over the years my wife and I and our children have gotten some very nice dogs for our family from animal shelters, usually at no cost. But some families do not want a house dog or a house cat. They want an outside dog or cat. So the animal stays outsides the house most of the time. Special dog houses are made for such dogs to use, especially at night in the colder parts of North America. 11. Why do Western people love their pets so much? A. Because they regard pets as their children. B. Because their children dont have many friends. C. Because they have leisure time and enough extra money.D. Because they are very much influenced by animal stories.12. Since they have heard a lot of animal stories, American children tend to be brought up to _. A. love animals when they grow up B. live and play with animals C. treat animals rudelyD. dislike animals 13. A purebred dog refers to a dog _. A. which is brought up by one family B. which is bred in a pure housedog club C. whose parents come from the same area D. whose parents belong to the single kind of dog14. How do most American families often get their first pet? A. They buy it from a pet shop. B. They get it from their friendsC. They pick up one from the streets.D. They always get one from the animal shelter. 15. Not all pets stay with their masters in the house all the time for _. A. people think the dogs are dirtyB. they dont like dogs to stay in their masters dog house C. its good for them to stay outsideD. some people dont want to keep a house dog or a house cat Passage FourQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:Nancy got a job as a secretary in a big company.
