The novel depicts the Heroine, Scarlet, with her life course from 16 to 28.During the short ten years , the writer concentrated the whole history of the war. In the long 10 years, Scarlets life was rewritten. he war also shaped an arrogant and imperious Scarlet to a firm and tenacious woman. After cleansed by the war, her image has became brighter and vivid. This paper mainly presents Scarlet OHaras character in Gone wind. The subject is approached from four different angels-vanity, rebellion, ignorance and fortitude .First, her vanity. In her careless girlhood, she was eager to be the public focus; being an adult , she concealed her humble parts; and then, after becoming rich, she showed off her wealth to her friends. In return, it cost her high price for them. She ruined her marriage, mocked by Rhett and repelled by her friends. Second, her rebellion. In her childhood, she disobeyed her mothers guidance. Later , forced by life, to support her family, she broke the traditional feudal ethnic. Third, ignorance. Love of the bubble elaborated an imaginary love until she really got , and she had been ignoring an ingenuous feeling until she really lost it Fourth, her fortitude. One was facing the gloomy reality; the other was overcoming difficulties she met. Whatever the situation was, she stood straight and held her head high. With these temperaments, which can be seem the Scarlet OHara was not only an arrogant and innocent beauty, surrendered full of energy and passion, but a woman who dare face life and never surrendered herself to difficulties. Scarlet OHara was from South America; her father was an owner of a plantation. She had an arresting face, pointed of chin, square of jaw and slanted brow In this face were blended the delicate features of her mother, a coast aristocrat of French descent and the heavy ones of her Irish father. But, under the pretty face, her complicated characters were more impressiveChapter 2 Vanity2.1 Eager to Be the Public focusWith the pale green eyes and white skin, she looked sweet, charming and giddy, But in reality, she was vain and obstinate . Until sixteen years old, she learnt little grace and had no sense to learn it . What all she concerned was good appearance, for which could help her to won her popularity in the public . She was the belle of her county. With the truth, she had not one girl friend , including her sister .But that never disturbed her, for it could be made up among boys. She never endured any long conversation of which she was not the chief. Whatever she said thus-and-so, men would respond with the same thus-and-so. However , this temper sometimes failed her , ever threw her on the abyss of despair which changed her whole life .At the party Twelve Trees , the idiot of boys plucked up all her courage to express her feeling to her beloved boyAshley. Unexpectedly, she was refused. The result shocked her .All of her heart was prevailed by vanity and there was no room to be left in her for anything. She immediately slipped his face with all of her strength. To save her face, she promised a marriage with a shy boy without a second hesitation to show Ashley that she had just played a joke with him. The rush act not only ended her girlhood, but had herself wear a heavy yoke around her neck.2.2 Concealing the Hours in NeedAlthough she suffered a lot from her marriage, she learnt a little lesson from it. After the war , Tara became impoverished. They neither had enough food to eat , nor had warm clothes to protect them from cold. Misfortunes never come singly. Starlet was threatened to pay taxes for Tara. At the end of Starlets tether , she came to see the imprisoned Rhett and wanted to borrow money from him. Even at that time , she wore a pretty dress which was made of her mothers curtains. With a look “everything is fine” .She met Rhett. Talking friendship and thinking money , but the thick callus in her hand betrayed her, the purpose of her visit and hard work were clearly written on her hands. As a result , nothing she borrowed but was fumigated by Rhetts sharp words2.3 Showing off her WealthAfter becoming rich , she built a house rather to live than dwarf her neighbors. On the day the building was completed she had prepared a party and invited all her friends and acquaintances , even those she didnt like. She by no means shared her happiness with them, but for making a display of her wealth. To her embarrassment , few guests came to visit her grand mansion.She was so supercilious that she looked down upon everyone , she was so vain that she preferred to be the envy of people rather than to be given pity .Her expanded vanity made her fall into the trap. She had thrown , threw herself from the top to the bottom of despair. What she received was a free-love marriage , personality insult and separated by her friends ,but she changed a little. She was unwilling to lag behind. She was eager to excel in everything , which was destined that she wasnt admitted by her people. Chapter 3 Rebellion3.1 Disobeying her Mothers GuidanceIn Starlets day , it was a mans world. The man owned the property, the woman managed it. Women were demanded not to interrupt gentleman when they were speaking , even if they knew more about matters. Women were always expected to be kind , gracious and forgiving .Starlets mother was a well educated woman, it followed that Scarlet was reared in the tradition of great ladies. But Scarlet was totally different .Just as she said ,“Im tired of saying ,How wonderful you are!” to fool men who havent got one-half the sense Ive got ,and Im tired of pretending I dont know everything ,so men can tell me things and feel important while they are doing it .Some day Im going to do and say everything I want to do and say ,and if people dont like it I dont care”, she did what she had said. Her preferred playmates were not her sisters or other well-born girls , but the Negro children and the boys in the neighborhood when her mother was out of sight.3.2 Breaking the Social RoutineAfter being a widow , she was told that the conduct of a widow might as well be dead ,although it was really not .Wrapped in a plain black dress ,she was almost chocked to death , she escaped to Atlanta ,where she took part in the parties and danced in her mourning dress. Knowing that being criticized by the public , she didnt change her conduct to cater to she surrounding for she paid a little attention to it. Her life would go back to the Hell again. Most of the joy of her life would be missed and life was too short to miss such pleasant things.Later ,to protect Taras plantation ,she had to go out and run her own business ,which run counter to the principle of.” women should stay at home,” She became objective of angry public criticism. But she didnt care or couldnt afford to care , for if I had stayed in my home ,I wouldnt have had any home left to stay in .”After all, Tara was deserved her pay.It is unfortunate that a person is not herself , but it is difficulty for one to keep her inherent quality. A comparison of Scarlet and her people , she was an exception she was innocent ,so she could be one sister of Negro and all kinds of hierarchy were out of her mind. She was sincere , so she own mistress ,so she stuck to her stand and thought the matters for herself .She was casual and elegant ,so she could say and do what her will wanted Chapter 4 Ignorance4.1 Love of the BubbleScarlet was so clever that she could appeal to boys but Ashley ,so clever that she thought Ashley should be elegant ,courageous and openhearted ,so clever that she thought he should be her ideal partner. With the idea , she poured all her emotion to him the and spared no effort to do everything for him without complaint-when he was in the battle, she took care of his wife and son. As her own business was becoming more prosperous every day , she arranged a position for him. What was Ashley like?He was a young master of Twelve Oaks , he was proficient in hunting ,gambling ,dancing and politics as other men ,but he was different from the rest of them. Because world and loved the peaceful country life. He was loyal to the old life. He hated war , but he joined the army to fight for a lost war which he knew clearly. After the war ,he saw the world totally changed and knew the truth of “survival of the fittest” very well ,he neither changed himself nor put himself into the cruel competition to adapt! the changed society .Instead ,he said: “My home is gone ,to me ,living at Twelve Oaks ,there was a real beauty to living ,I belong to that life. And now it is gone and I am out of place in this mew life , Im afraid”. He humbled himself in the corner of the new world like and old man recalled the old memory , he saw little present and future. Meanwhile , he was supported by Scarlet and Melanie in material and soul. How did he del with Starlets feeling ?On the one hand ,he knew exactly they were two persons who belonged to two different worlds, which couldnt make a successful marriage .To keep his gentlemen identity and faith to his wife ,he eluded Scarlet. On the other hand , he was attracted by Starlets vigor and enthusiasm ,he eluded Scarlet. On the other hand ,he was attracted by Starlets vigor and enthusiasm ,he couldnt help admiring Scarlet .All of these didnt discourage Scarlet from seeking her pure love ,Finally ,Melanies death awoke Scarlet from her years dream .She was to frightened by Melanies death that she had expected a strong and comforted Ashley to relieve her sorrow and fear. To her surprise , she saw the blank ,bewildered and frightened eyes in him than hers. At the moment , her sense recovered and she became aware of the brave gentleman she relied upon and upheld her through so many years were her imagination. He was nothing but a childish toy she hadnt got ten years ago. Therefore , with Melanie gone ,her girlish dream vanished like mist.4.2 Love of the real If Ashley was a dreamer Rhett was a realist .He came into Starlets sight with his bad reputation. As a rebel of his family and the upper-class , he despised earthly rules ,indulged his behavior ,but kind and generous .Tempering himself in different circumstances many years he formed his own moral standard and unique personality .He criticized the war reasonably. Witnessing Scarlet expressed her emotion to Ashley , he saw hearty touched by Starlets courage and frankness. He said:“ Miss OHara, you are a girl of rare spirit ,very admirable spirit ,and I take my hat to you.” He felt in love with Scarlet , because ht discovered they had many place in common. However, both of them were go proud that the feeling was conveyed in a special way .Whenever they met , sweet words were beyond the ears reach ,satire and quarrel were the theme of their conversation. Therefore , Scarlet failed to feel the romantic love between them. Although Rhett had been concerning about her for years.When the 17-year-old girl had to wrap in the black mourning aress , her young heart was tortured. It was Rhett who broke the traditional chains of lock and freed her from the widowed prison ,encouraged her to think for herself rather than to follow their ways to opposite her own will he offered the beautiful life to Scarlet .After Atlanta was occupied ,Scarlet was madly homesick and wanted to return home as soon as possible. It was Rhett who ran risk of his life to escort her. When Tara was in trouble , he lent money to Scarlet to set up her lumber mills. In course of seeking the development of business ,she was Rhett who supported and comforted her as he did .But what did she do to repay him ,After her plan borrowing money from him failed ,she hoped he would be hanged. After they married , Scarlet still indulged herself in her imaginary love. Their daughter died young , she contributed her death to him. Until seeing Ashley standing like a child in front of her , she knew Rhett would compel horror in her .Suddenly ,she became aware of the fact she had been accustoming Rhetts care so long without noticing it . She couldnt wait to tell him , but she saw a tired eyes and a broken heart. With she sound of Rhetts feet dying away , she sensed that something strong unyielding ,and confident in himall these qualities she and looked for in Ashley but had never been found .Fate played a joke with Scarlet ,as she knew the genuine feeling ;she lost her best life partner. As a woman , Starlets marriage was a tragedy .Its an inevitable outcome of the accident ,for she did know neither Ashley nor Rhett . If she knew Ashley ,she didnt admire a coward ,she escapist who hesitated to move forward .If she knew Rhett ,she didnt ignore a realist ,a pioneer who dared to challenge himself .Whats more ,she didnt know herself at all ,didnt know that her feeling had changed when time changed .Thus ,her ignorance was doomed the failure of her marriage .Chapter 5 Fortitude5.1 Courage to Confront the Reality The Civil War took away everything the people had possessed-money and position ,and a ruined world came everyones view .But different people made different reactions .Some people like Gerald OHara ,their weak nerves could not bear the sudden disaster .They lost their senses and lived in their dreamlike world .More people like Ashley ;they lived in the memory of the past .In the new world ,everything had changed but the old forms and manners .These previous ladies and gentlemen ,to reserve and prolong the old world ,they acted and talked as they had done before .Maybe they didnt know where their nest meal was coming ;they were willing to hold a magnificent party as before .Maybe they lived in the open air ;they squandered money to set up the grand tombs .They talked to the old friends who refused to change as themselves ,they remembered and enjoyed the glowing past ,for a while they neednt think the present .At the same time ,if someone made his living by accepting a position or doing something different from them he was regarded as a traitor . Hardships can make and break people .Scarlet belonged to the former . After escaping a bare death to Tara ,she had expected to unload the ton her young shoulder .However ,at the end of the road was a sea of bitters waiting for her ,which she had never seen-Tara was ruined ,Mother was dead ,Father was stunned ,the negroes had gone and sisters were ill .Tara a dying old her father? Or did she blame everyone and everything? No, instead of escaping ,the Irish girl started to see the thing with new eyes for the first time .She knew now she was not a lady any more ,but her fathers eldest daughter .No ,I could not let them live out their lives in my aunts homes as poor relation ,the OHaras did not take charity.” “Father , penniless ,had raised Tara ,I was his daughter ,I could to as well as he had done.” As misfortune befalling ,most people resigned themselves to their fate, or exaggerating it to gain others sympathy ,or find excuses to free themselves from the responsibility they should take .However, to brave Scarlet ,the first step she did was to accept it ,remained cool-headed and steady to face the reality whatever it was like ,not to sink in the abyss of self-pity .Because she knew that the bright life wasnt given by others but created by her .Thus ,she wasnt threatened by the ruthless reality .On the contrary ,her strong responsibility gave her strength to stand before the real life; her strong confidence had her believe herself to overcome difficulties ;her decision never yielding to the fate made her have enough courage to challenge the dark future.5.2 Overcoming Difficulties and Strikes How hard the situation was !Since all value of the courtesy and good manners could not keep the family from hunger ,could not prevent the cold from the house ,could not get rid Tara of the exploit of the local government ,the apple of her parents eye ,who had never raised her hand to pick up her discarded stockings ,was trapping down the rough road almost barefoot and walking miles to look for vegetables with her blistered hand .The fried cakes could be smelled in her dram .Every day ,she woke up hungry and went sleep hungry .Hungry gnawed at her empty stomach and strengthened her determination to eliminate it in the meantime .As she said:“ As God is my witness, Im going to live through this ,and when it is over ,Im never going to hungry again .No ,neither any of my folks”. In the following days , she worked in the fields ,planted rice and raised animals .Before the winter came ,the whole family could go to bed without hunger .As Scarlets life was stepping into the ordinary routine ,Taras former housekeeper ,who had been dismissed by her mother .The present local governor attempted to fascinate Tara with his power .As she knew Scarlet couldnt pay the extra taxes for Tara .He was half right .and he bet a wrong horse .As soon as knowing his evil purpose .Replacing bowing scraping ,Scarlet ,like a guardian angel standing at the stairs ,her face wrathful, green eyes blazing roared: “Ill tear this house down ,stone by stone ,and burn it and sow every acre with salt before I see either of you put foot over this threshold”. The rampart rogue got nothing but biting remarks and they had to retreat depressed .At last ,when she found that her husband Rhett was the only person she had loved and he was going to leave her without any emotion .She was overcome with sorrow ,but different from Ashley ,she said to herself: “Tomorrow ,Ill think of some way to get him back .After all ,tomorrow is another day .” At the beginning of difficulties, it seemed the end of the world ,the hardship was boundless .But in any case ,the inner force and a sense of mission pushed her to break down any barriers to fulfill her purpose .When she went through this .the pain looked weakened.” she looked back and wondered how she could have been so frightened ,frightened like a child noise. And what a child she had been to think that Yankees and fire and defeat were the worst thing that could happen to her ! How easy she would find it now to be brave before an invading army .” Difficulties didnt mean unlucky! Now hunger couldnt swallow her ,she would conquer it with her diligent hands; power couldnt overcome her .She would defeat it with her stern just ;love couldnt fail her ,she would light it with sincerity and hope .Just these unusual experience, shaped her to be clear whom to love and whom to hate. Whether frustration or blow , from outer or inner ,thee brave woman could hold her proud head and go forward.Chapter 6 ConclusionScarlet spent 10years in the flames of war .During this period, the confrontation between conscience and desire ,love and money ,etc .she was mould from an arrogant and conceited young girl to a firm and persistent woman .The four characters are isolated .Scarlet wowed a lonely seed in her ,for she was distained while looking down upon others .She reaped a regretful harvest in her ,for she unconsciously let the happiness slip through her fingers .She kept the youth and vigor everlasting in her ,for she released her free idea and valued life .She rooted a confident belief in her ,for she d
