If full committee review is necessary,this can take up to 8 weeks,.,If you plan on registering for 799A in the fall, make sure this is taken care of the previous spring as many faculty are not available during the summer.,PLAN AHEAD!,This is,your,responsibility. For human subjects, even if you are using existing data collected with IRB approval,your,use must still be approved. Do not rely on your thesis adviser; always double check with the IRB for it will be,you,who suffers the consequences!,Procedures continued,The,SDSU Dissertation and Thesis Manual,(,DTM,) is the required text for 799. When conflicts occur with the,DTM, the,DTM,takes precedence. You will be using this for citing sources plus anything the,DTM,does not include. To meet the “without-risk deadline, contact them during the prior semester; to meet the last-day-to-submit deadline, at the beginning of the semester.,There are SDSU Thesis Templates (for MS Word and LaTeX) available from the DTR website (TEMPLATES link).,FREE BATS workshops in Word and the Thesis Template. To take the template workshop, you must also take the “Word Intermediate: Document Formatting workshop. These are offered as a set 5x per semester. The first 3 workshops (prior to the without-risk deadline) always fill up; you need to pre-register. If there IS a bug, I need to know about it to fix it.,Manuscript Options,MPH and ENS have developed a new thesis structural option to encourage students to publish their research.,Formatting regulations remain the same, but the thesis is written and organized to facilitate submission of an article to a journal, therefore citation of sources in the text and reference list entries will follow the regulations of the journal (as opposed to APA for traditional theses).,Manuscript Options:Traditional Structure,A traditional thesis is typically organized into five chapters, plus appendices, if any, as follows:,Chpt 1 Introduction,Chpt 2 Comprehensive Literature Review,Chpt 3 Methodology,Chpt 4 Results,Chpt 5 Discussion,References, followed by appendices, if any,Sometimes there are only 4 chapters when the Introduction and Lit Review are consolidated.,Within each chapter, there are typically sections and subsections.,Manuscript Options:,Journal Structure-MPH/ENS,A thesis prepared using the alternative “journal option has 3 parts (actually 2 chapters plus an appendix):,Chpt 1 Comprehensive Literature Review (Part 1),Chpt 2 Journal Article (Part 2), in which the Appendix is referenced.,Appendix At least 1 containing supplemental data.,Chapter 1 Comprehensive Lit Review,Cite sources in the text according to the Journal selected. Include as the last section of the chapter, a reference list formatted according to the journal selected (except for page layout, which would follow the DTM).,Manuscript Options:,Journal Structure-MPH/ENS,Chapter 2 Journal Article. This chapters,sections,will be comprised of what is normally found in a traditional 4-chapter thesis, plus references:,Section 1 Introduction (with brief lit review),Section 2 Methodology,Section 3 Results,Section 4 Discussion,Section 5 References (only those cited in Chpt 2; follow the same instructions as for Chpt 1).,All sections will start with 1,st,-level,heading,formatting. The first 4 will typically include subsections and sub-subsections, etc.,Manuscript Options:,Journal Structure-MPH/ENS,Appendices,There will be at least 1 appendix with supplemental data (e.g., a more detailed methodology, extended data sets/data analysis, and/or additional tables or figures.),Additional appendices containing the traditional material may also be added (IRB approval, surveys, raw data, etc.),Before actually submitting to a journal, you would need to:,Delete reference(s) to appendix(ces),Reformat page numbering, running heads, title and heading format,Move graphics to separate pages and inserting reference tag in their place (i.e., “insert Figure 1 here).,Manuscript Options:,Journal Structure-ENS,An alternative structure for the “journal option, used by many ENS students, is to have the traditional “look & feel of a4-chapter thesis, with the comprehensive lit review in an appendix. This structure is good if the methodology and results sections do not need supplementation.
