阅读训练专题故事类(A) When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my fathers friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul. Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call us. Dad and I would go to Bernies place. Wed sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we would bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heartthe reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free partand throw away the rest. Bernie was my fathers ideal of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernies wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon. What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you dont take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy lifes small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life. For many years, I forgot that lesson Id learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could. Well, Ive relearned it. Neither of us knew what to do.After we realized what had just happened, the truck we hit started to drive over to the parking lot so we followed. We parked next to the truck and got out of the car. To make the situation worse, it was raining hard, so we were wet all over. We were about to walk over to the driver when he started shouting at us and I felt so bad but I didnt know what to say to him. I felt like crying. When I got home, I was expecting to be yelled at or even got my car away, but it was just the opposite. My parents just talked to me calmly and said that they were so glad I was okay and that it was not a big accident. They told me to be more careful next time and this was something to learn from. You have no idea where you are. You passed the last house two hours ago. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device (装置) which uses satellites (卫星) to find the users position (位置). It can find your position within 20 metres. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street. There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting the Earth. The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates (计算) its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well. Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate(精确的). There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Its the whale shark.Although the whale shark is our biggest fish and lives in many oceans around the world, few people have ever heard of it. Scientists have not been studying whale sharks for very long. Much more needs to be learned about them.A whale shark is sometimes called a “gentle giant (温柔的巨人)”. It likes to be alone and doesnt care a bit about divers or humans. The biggest whale shark weighed 24,250 pounds and was nearly 40 feet long. This makes it heavier and longer than a school bus. Inside its huge mouth are great numbers of very small teeth. To count all of them, youll need to do some maths. The whale sharks teeth are arranged in rows. There are between eleven and thirteen rows on each jaw (颚) and around three hundred teeth in each row. However, the whale shark rarely uses its teeth. It does not chew or bite its food. Large amounts of water are pulled into its mouth and then pushed out through its gills (鳃). For a few months every year, a group of whale sharks comes to Ningaloo Reef, off Western Australia. This gives scientists a wonderful chance to study the large fish. Whale sharks do live in other oceans of the world, but no one knows their population. It is possible that our biggest fish may need protecting.
