From the first day he entered my junior-high classroom, Willard P. Franklin existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me, his teacher. My attempts at establishing a friendly relationship with him were met with complete indifference. Even a “Good Morning Willar” received only an inaudible grunt. I could see that his classmates fared no better. Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his barrier of silence.,Shortly after the Thanksgiving holi- day, we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district. “Christmas is a season of giving,” I told my students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food, clothing and toys for these needy people. We start the collection tomorrow.”,When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten. Except for Willard P. Franklin. The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he strolled up to my desk. Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container. “I dont need no milk for lunch,” he mumbled. For a moment, just a mo- ment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk.,That night, after school, I took our meager contributions to the school principal. I couldnt help sharing the incident that had taken place. “I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I told the principal.,“Yes, I believe it sounds hopeful,” he nodded. “And I have a hunch we might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us. I just received a list of the poor families in our school who most need help through the Christmas collection. Here, take a look at it.” As I gazed down to read, I discovered Willard P. Franklin and his family were the top names on the list.,A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one.,Learning experiences happen to us throughout our lives. Not long ago, I had one that I would like to share. I was going to Marblehead with my sailboat team. The team was racing down the highway at 85 mph when we realized we were hungry. Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand-new $20 bill. I was so excited because I had never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on food seemed like throwing it away.,We all rushed into the pizza line. Finally I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About halfway through the meal, I realized I had not actually handed any money to the cashier. I had just walked out, and nobody had noticed. I felt terrible.,My conscience opened its mouth and swallowed me in one big bite. I couldnt get it over. I just couldnt go back to the cashier and pay for my stolen pizza. I was so upset that I refused to give myself the pleasure of an ice cream in fear that someone would say, “Hey, Jeff, why dont you use the change from the pizza instead of that nice, new $20 bill?” I was not so proud of my cash now.,For the next two years, whenever I was reminded of the “pizza incident”, I would say to myself, “Dont think about it” I have learned two things from this experience. Maybe I was a fool for giving in to my conscience, and being too stupid to appreciate a free pizza. But the real lesson is that even if you get away from what you have done, your conscience will catch up with you.,This reflects the saying, “A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one.” I was a coward and have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I had been a “hero” and gone back to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only once, or maybe twice.,A teenager lived alone with his father, and the two of them had a very special relationship. The father believed in encouragement. Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always in the stands cheering. He never missed a game. This young man was the smallest of the class when he entered high school. His father continued to encourage him but also made it very clear that he did not have to play football if he didnt want to.,But the young man loved football and decided to hang in there. He was determined to try his best at every practice, and perhaps he would get to play when he became a senior. All through high school he never missed a practice or a game, but remained a bench warmer all four years. His faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for him. When the young man went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a “walk-on.”,Everyone was sure he could never make the cut, but he did. The coach admitted that he kept him on the roster because he always puts his heart and soul to every practice, and at the same time, provided the other members with the spirit and hustle they badly needed. The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and was sent season tickets for all the college games. This persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four years at college, but he never got to play in the game.,It was the end of his senior football season, and as he trotted onto the practice field shortly before the big play off game, the coach met him with a telegram. The young man read the telegram and he became deathly silent. Swallowing hard, he mumbled to the coach, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?”,The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son. And dont even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.” Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football gear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were astounded to see their faithful teammate back so soon.,“Coach, please let me play. I have just got to play today,” said the young man. The coach pretended not to hear him. There was no way he wanted his worst player in this close playoff game. But the young man persisted, and finally feeling sorry for young man, the coach gave in. “All right,” he said. “You can go in.” Before long, the coach, the players and everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes. This little unknown, who had never played before, was doing everything right. The opposing team could not stop him. He ran, he passed, blocked and tackled like a star. His team began to triumph.,The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this young man intercepted a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown. The fans broke loose. His teammates hoisted him onto their shoulders. Such cheering you have never heard! Finally, after the stands had emptied and the team had showered and left the locker room, the coach noticed that the young man was sitting quietly in the corner all alone. The coach came to him and said, “Young man, I cant believe it. You were fantastic! Tell me what got into you? How did you do it?”,Young man looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?” The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, “Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and I wanted to show him I could do it!”,需要重点积累高频词汇,accept achieve add agreement as avoid bear before, beyond birth blind board book break bridge bright,中考作文1,你校美籍学生Tom 和Mary向学校的“知心信箱”投了自己的求助信。 He / She Gives me the Greatest Help 的征文活动,请你投稿,谈谈他(她)是怎样帮助你的,你取得了哪些进步,你有什么感想或受到了哪些教育。 得分注意:请不要写出真实校名和姓名。 提示词语:grow up, learn, take care of, understand, love, think,中考作文3,汶川地震(Wenchuan Earthquake)发生后,9岁学生林浩(Lin Hao)救了两名同学,然后步行7个小时到达安全地点。 请你就林浩同学的事迹,以“Learn from the Hero”为题给你校英语专刊投稿。内容包括林浩同学事迹简介,你对这件事的感受,以及你要向他学习什么。 提示词语:a student, nine years old, happen, save, walk, to safety, be deeply moved, brave, give up,中考作文4,假设你叫刘京,是美国中学生托尼的笔友,你收到了他的来信。请给托尼写一封回信,回答他的问题,介绍北京良好的公交服务,并谈谈你的感受。,Hi!
