Write your Chinese version in the proper space on the Answer Sheet.Scientific research is by nature an uncertain undertaking. Like any exploratory process, it is not possible to predict what one will find or what its eventual utility might be. That is the whole point of research-investigating what we do not know. In other walks of life we have come to grips with the notion of stochastic phenomena that are not individually predictable, but can be tackled as a group. Mutual fund managers do not expect every investment to have the same return, nor do actuaries expect every person to live precisely to the life expectancy. The whole point of a mutual fund, or an insurance company, is to create a portfolio of unpredictable entities that in the aggregate yield to statistical prediction. Given a sufficiently large portfolio of research projects, and enough time to bring them to fruition, the track record is clear: Science is a tremendous, and very predictable, investment.Yet this is not how science is viewed by those who fund it in government or industry. Therefore, projects are subjected to a scrutiny wholly inappropriate to their nature. The most reliable way to get research funds is to predict the research results up front, to guarantee low risk of failure, and to present a clear and certain path from results to great commercial utility.【答案】科学研究一项不确定的事业。 8. 单选题( )the advances of science the discomforts of old age will no doubt always be with us. A.As forB.ExceptC.BesidesD.Despite【答案】D【解析】考查介词。A: as for “至于” ;B: except “除之外”;C: besides “除之外(还有)”;D: despite “尽管”。 9. 单选题It is announced that a wallet has been found and can he ( ) at the managers office.问题1选项A.declaredB.obtainedC.reclaimedD.recognized【答案】C【解析】考查动词辨析。 10. 单选题A classic series of experiments to determine the effects of overpopulation on communities of rats was reported in February of 1962 in an article in Scientific American. The experiments were conducted by a psychologist, John B.Calhoun, and his associates. In each of these experiments, an equal number of male and female adult rats were placed in an enclosure and given an adequate supply of food, water, and other necessities. The rat populations were allowed to increase. Calhoun knew from experience approximately how many rats could live in the enclosures without experiencing stress due to overcrowding. He allowed the population to increase to approximately twice this number. Then he stabilized the population by removing offspring that were not dependent on their mothers. He and his associates then carefully observed and recorded behavior in these overpopulated communities. At the end of their experiments, Calhoun and his associates were able to conclude that overcrowding causes a breakdown in the normal social relationships among rats, a kind of social disease. The rats in the experiments did not follow the same patterns of behavior as rats would in a community without overcrowding. The females in the rat population were the most seriously affected by the high population density: They showed deviant maternal behavior: they did not behave as mother rats normally do. In fact, many of the pups, as rat babies are called, died as a result of poor maternal care. For example, mothers sometimes abandoned their pups, and, without their mothers care, the pups dieD.Under normal conditions, a mother rat would not leave her pups alone to die. However, the experiments verified that in overpopulated communities, mother rats do not behave normally. Their behavior may be considered pathologically diseased. The dominant males in the rat population were the least affected by overpopulation. Each of these strong males claimed an area of the enclosure as his own. Therefore, these individuals did not experience the overcrowding in the same way as the other rats diD.The fact that the dominant males had adequate space in which to live may explain why they were not as seriously affected by overpopulation as the other rats. However, dominant males did behave pathologically at times. Their antisocial behavior consisted of attacks on weaker male, female, and immature rats. This deviant behavior showed that even though the dominant males had enough living space, they too were affected by the general overcrowding in the enclosure.Non-dominant males in the experimental rat communities also exhibited deviant social behavior. Some withdrew completely; they moved very little and ate and drank at times when the other rats were sleeping in order to avoid contact with them. Other non-dominant males were hyperactive; they were much more active than is normal, chasing other rats and fighting each other. This segment of the rat population, tike all the other parts, was affected by the overpopulation. The behavior of the non-dominant males and of the other components of the rat population has parallels in human behavior. People in densely populated areas exhibit deviant behavior similar to that of the rats in Calhouns experiments. In large urban areas such as New York, London, Mexican City, and Cairo, there are abandoned children. There are cruel, powerful individuals, both men and women. There are also people who withdraw and people who become hyperactive. The quantity of other forms of social pathology such as murder, rape, and robbery also frequently occur in densely populated human communities. Is the principal cause of these disorders overpopulation? Calhouns experiments suggest that it might be. In any case, social scientists and city planners have been influenced by the results of this series of experiments.1.Paragraph 1 is organized according to( ).2.Calhoun stabilized the rat population( ).3.Which of the following inferences CANNOT be made from the information in ParA.1.4.Which of the following behavior didnt happen in this experiment?5.The main idea of the paragraph three is that( ).问题1选项A.reasonsB.experimentsC.examplesD.definition问题2选项A.when it was double the number that could live in the enclosure without stressB.by removing young ratsC.at a constant number of adult rats in the enclosureD.all of the above are correct问题3选项A.Calhouns experiment is still considered important today.B.Overpopulation causes pathological behavior in rat populations.C.Stress does not occur in rat communities unless there is overcrowdingD.Calhoun had experimented with rats before. A.All the male rats exhibited pathological behavior.B.Mother rats abandoned their pups.C.Female rats showed deviant maternal behaviorD.Mother rats left their rat babies alone. A.dominant males had adequate living spaceB.dominant males were not as seriously affected by overcrowding as the other ratsC.dominant males attacked weaker ratsD.the strongest males are always able to adapt to bad conditions【答案】第1题:B第2题:B第3题:A第4题:A第5题:B【解析】1. 由题干可以定位到文章第一段中 “A classic series of experiments to determine the effects of overpopulation on communities of rats was reported in February of 1962 in an article in Scientific American.” 由题干关键字rat population可以定位到文章第一段中 “Then he stabilized the population by removing offspring that were not dependent on their mothers.” 由B项可以定位到文章中 “Calhoun and his associates were able to conclude that overcrowding causes a breakdown in the normal social relationships among rats, a kind of. social disease.” 则排除B选项;由C选项可以定位到文章中 “The rats in the experiments did not follow the same patterns of behavior as rats would in a community without overcrowding.” 由B项可以定位到文章中 “For example, mothers sometimes abandoned their pups.” 则排除C选项;由D项可以定位到文章中 “Under normal conditions, a mother rat would not leave her pups alone to die.” 根据B项 “主导性的雄性老鼠并不像其他大鼠一样严重地受到过度拥挤的影响”可以定位到文章第三段第一句“The dominant males in the rat population were the least affected by overpopulation.” 11. Directions: Put the following pas sage into Chinese. Write your Chinese version in the proper space on the Answer Sheet. This greater interdependence is not limited to the financial sector. The new challenges of today are global in nature and therefore, they demand a global response. This applies to issues such as climate change, eneigy security, terrorism prevention, trafficking and organized crime. We can no longer meet these challenges by closing the door and simply looking after our own house. Instead, we must reach out and seek cooperation, wherever cooperation is more effective. The world is currently witnessing the broadest and deepest wave of globalization ever producing great opportunities but also some risks. Globalization has helped hundreds of millions from poverty and provided businesses with the possibility to invest and expand abroaD.But those same businesses know that they can no longer live on past achievements. When we speak of globalization, it is important to understand that openness and interdependence are the rules of the game. Our cooperation in the fight against climate change is particularly important. We all know that climate change is real, that it is caused by human activity, and that its consequences are universal and will be felt first and foremost by the poorest. It will serve little purpose if other countries do not join in common action. Yes, there is a cost to reducing emissions, but the cost of global warming and not just in the long term is going to be far higher, including for China.【答案】我们之间日益加深的相互依存并不局限于金融领域。 12. 单选题The sheer diversity of tropical plants represents a seemingly( )source of raw materials, of which only a few have been utilize.问题1选项A.exploitedB.quantifiableC.controversialD.inexhaustible【答案】D【解析】考查形容词词义辨析。A: exploited “开采;利用”;B: quantifiable “可以计量的”;C: controversial “有争议的”;D: inexhaustible “无穷无尽的”。 13. In contrast to the science of classical antiquity, modern science is basically unfinished whereas ancient science had the appearance of something completed to which the notion of progress was not essential. Modern science progresses into the infinite.Modern science has realized that a finished and total world-view is scientifically impossible. Only when scientific criticism is crippled by making particulars absolute can a closed view of the world pretend to scientific validityand then it is a false validity. Those great new unified systems of knowledgesuch as modern physicshave grown up in the scientific times only with single aspects of reality. And reality, as a whole, has been fragmented as never before; whence the openness of the modern world is contrast to the closed Greek cosmos.【答案】和古典时代的科学相比,现代科学基本上是未完成状态,然而古老科学有完成某样东西的表象,而且进步的概念对此非常重要。 14. 单选题In most cases politicians are( )as they seldom tell the truth.问题1选项A.skepticalB.pessimisticC.incredulousD.incredible【答案】D【解析】考查形容词辨析。A: skeptical “怀疑的,多疑的”;B: pessimistic “悲观的”;C: incredulous “怀疑的”;D: incredible“难以相信的”。 15. 单选题At first, the( )of color pictures over a long distance seemed impossible but with painstaking efforts and at great expense, it became a reality.问题1选项A.transactionB.transmissionC.transformationD.transition【答案】B【解析】考查名词词义辨析题。 16. 单选题In the eyes of the linguists, there exists no( )among the languages in the world.问题1选项A.statusB.scaleC.hierarchyD.gauge【答案】B【解析】考查名词词义辨析。A: status “身份;地位”;B: scale “规模;等级(层次),级别”;C: hierarchy “等级 制度(尤指社会或组织)”;D: gauge “(常指用某种仪器)测量”。 It can be said that any form of human civilization is a large information system. The first stage is language. Only with language can we share experience and have collective memory as well as accumulate knowledge collectively. The second step is to write down. Writing has offered a form of memory that is less likely to disappear and more easily transmitted. Then printing greatly has increased the dissemination of information.Modern electronics is providing us with new and more powerful ways to collect, process, process and deliver. It is a remarkable feature of this development that greatly increases ability without posing burden on energy or scarce materials.
