With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone the animal and save these in a dangerous situation. Thats a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called Noahs Ark.Noahs Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of these animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & Ms College of Veterinary, Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future. It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles will probably become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years. This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal. The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete. The nuclear transfer of one species to another is not easy, but the lack of available panda eggs could be a major problem, Kraemer believes. They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and its difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort, adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A&M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog. They are trying to do something thats never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noahs Ark. Were both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and theres a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. The cooperation between us is very much needed.1. The final aim of Noahs Ark project is to_. .A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas B. save endangered animals from dying outC. collect DNA of endangered animals to study D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another答案解析:答案为B。 最后一段第二句 “Were both trying to save animals that face extinction.” B。2. According to Professor Kraemer, _.A. the long time lasting cloning research could be successful.B. the eggs transfers immediately result in having a baby.C. the lack of nuclear transfer could be a major problem to have new pandas.D. if species should die out, basic building blocks would heal them. 由倒数第二段第一句话 “but the lack of available panda eggs could be a major problem”可知,C选项错误。由该段第二句话 “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby).” 由该段第三句话 “It takes a long time and its difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works.” 第二段提到 “If certain species should become extinct, there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.”,而 D选项 “如果物种灭绝,基础建设材料将治愈他们”夸大了基础建设材料的作用,与原文不符,故错误。3. The best title for the passage may be_.A. Chinas Success in Pandas CloningB. Helping Ways to Avoid ExtinctionC. Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas D. The Practice in Noahs Ark答案解析:答案为C。 4. From the passage we know that_.A. Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a pandaB. scientists try to implant a pandas egg into a rabbitC. Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researchesD. about two thousand species are to die out in a century答案解析:答案为D。 由第三段第一句话 “It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles will probably become extinct in over 100 years.” A选项明显错误;由第四段第一句话 “This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit.” 由最后一段最后一句话 “The cooperation between us is very much needed.” CHumans are naturally drawn to other life forms and the worlds outside of our own. We take delight in the existence of creatures and even whole societies beyond our everyday lives. This sense of wonder is universal. Look at the efforts that scientists have made to find out whether life of some kind exists on Mars, and the popularity of fantasy(幻想)literature or movies like The Lord of the Rings. This sense of wonder draws us to each other, to the world around us, and to the world of make-believe. But have we gone so far in creating worlds of fantasy that we are missing the pleasure of other worlds that already exist all around us?Human beings, as biologists have suggested, possess an inborn desire to connect with and understand other life forms. However, people, especially in big cities, often lead rather isolated lives. In a study of British schoolchildren, it was found that children by age eight were much more familiar with characters from television shows and video games than common wildlife. Without modem technology, a small pond could be an amazing world filled with strange and beautiful plants, insects, birds, and animals. When we lack meaningful interaction with the world around us, and sometimes even with our families and friends, we seek to understand and communicate with things that exist only in our imaginations or on a computer screen. The world of make-believe is not necessarily bad, but when the world of fantasy becomes the only outlet for our sense of wonder, then we are really missing something. We are missing a connection with the living world. Other wonderful worlds exist all around us. But even more interesting is that if we look closely enough, we can see that these worlds, in a broad sense, are really part of our own.36. What man is curious about is mainly _.A. the unknown worldB. the unusual eventsC. the daily triflesD. the isolated lives37The popularity of The Lord of the Rings proves .Athe close connection between man and the fantasy worldBthe wonderful achievements of fantasy literatureCthe fine taste of moviegoers around the worldDthe general existence of the sense of curiosity38What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?APeople are far less familiar with the world of fantasy.BThe world around us could serve as a source of wonder.CThe world of fantasy can be mirrored by a small and lively pond.DModern technology prevents us from developing our sense of wonder.39If our sense of wonder relies totally on the world of make-believe, we will _.Afail to appreciate the joy in our livesBbe confused by the world of make-believeCmiss the chance to recognize the fantasy worldDbe trapped by other worlds existing all around us40. What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To show us the hidden beauty in our world.B. To warn us not to get lost in the fantasy world.C. To argue against the misuse of the sense of wonder.D. To discuss the influence of the world of make-believe.【参考答案】36-40. ADBAB 阅读理解-BIn the United States, there were some well-constructed houses for native Indians, ranging from the simple brush shelter to the five-storied pueblo. In the eastern United States, one of the existing types was that commonly know under the Algonkian name of wigwam in which the Iroquois Indians lived. The wigwams were of wagon-top shape with straight sides and ends, made by bending young trees to form the round shape. Over this shape pieces of tree bark were laid to protect the Indians from bad weather. Over the bark dried grass was added. A small hole allowed smoke to escape from the top. Doorways at each end served also as windows, The Iroquois Indians built trunk walls all around their villages. The wall had only one opening, They could quickly close this opening if their enemies came near.Interestingly, the Choctaw Indians in Mississippi also lived in a wigwam of a most primitive(原始的) construction, but different from those of the Iroquois Indians. The Choctaw Indians wigwams, made from mud, cane and straw, were in the form of a bee-hive. The covering was made of a long, tough grass. A post in the centre supported the roof. A hole in the top admitted the light, and allowed the smoke to pass out.The tipi tent-housing of the upper lake and plains area was put up with poles set lightly in the ground, tied together near the top, and covered with bark and grass in the lake country. It was easily portable, and two women could set it up or take it down within an hour. The Pawnee, Mandan and other Indian tribes (部落) along the Missouri built solid ring-shaped structures of trunk, covered with earth and dried grass, housing a dozen families. The Wichita and other tribes of the Texas border built large ring-shaped houses covered with dried grass. KS*5U.CApart from the regular housing, almost every tribe had some style of housing.( ) 1.Which of the following pictures shows the house for the Iroquois Indians?( ) 2. According to the passage, the Pawnee Indians built their houses _.A. with openings in the trunk walls B. large enough for several families C. in a ring shape with bark and mud D. by bending young trees to form the shape( ) 3. All the native Indian houses described in the passage were_. KS*5U.CA. of the same shape B. covered with grass C. built with a post in the centre D. built with doorways at each end ( ) 4. The passage suggests that _A. all the native Indians built trunk walls all around their houses B. all the native Indian houses were built with poles tied togetherC. the Iroquois Indians took safety into account while building their wigwams D. the Choctaw Indians in Mississippi built their wigwams with straight sides and ends【语篇解读】本篇文章为记叙文。 72.答案A。 根据第二段第二句“The wigwams were of wagon-top shape with straight sides and ends”可知,选项A符合题意。73. 根据第五段中“The Pawnee, Mandan and other Indian tribes housing a dozen families”可知,应选B项。74. 根据第二段最后一句“They could quickly close this opening if their enemies came near”可以推断出the Iroquois Indians建造房屋的时候把自身的安全考虑在内了。因此可推断出C项DA MENTORING program (导师制) is giving life changing opportunities to Banbury youth. Young Inspirations was founded two years ago to provide mentoring sessions for students and unemployed young adults aged 11 to 21.Alex Goldberg, the programs founder, said: We set up Young Inspirations because we wanted to give young people experiences which will potentially be life changing and broaden their outlook.”We try to create work experience opportunities that will really make a difference to our youth. For example, weve secured internships (实习) with world-famous firms such as Honda.”At a time of funding cutbacks where schools are finding it more and more difficult to offer this kind of mentoring, it is extremely important that these opportunities are available both to help youth with their school work and grades and to give them opportunities which may help shape their futures. Kieran Hepburn, 14, is one of a group of Banbury youth who has benefited from the program so far. In October the Banbury School pupil was accompanied by Young Inspirations staff to Paris where he was an observer at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) International Youth Forum (论坛).The event was held for young people from around the world, to seek their views on how the future of youth and education should look. Kieran joined several hundred observers mostly in their 20s and was the only UK school pupil to attend the event. Kieran thinks the trip was a life changing experience. Before we left I didnt quite know what to make of it but when we got there we didnt stop, it was amazing, he said, We went to three or four hours of debates each day and then did something cultural each afternoon. The main theme of the forum was how youth can drive change in political and public life. It dealt with issues such as drug abuse, violence and unemployment.Kieran said: It has really helped me to improve my confidence and social skills as well as my school grades and I was voted most improved pupil at school in August. The Young Inspirations mentoring sessions take place each Friday in Banbury.
