(5分)阅读理解 Years ago when I was at the Grand Canyon, I remember someone coming up to the canyons edge (边缘), taking a shot with their camera and then walking away, like got itdone, barely even glancing at the magnificent scene sprawling (展开) in front of them, Linda Henkel, a scientist at Fairfield University, US told Live Science.Henkel was surprised by how obsessed (着迷的) people are with taking pictures these daysbefore dinner, during friends birthday parties, on museum tours and so on. You know people just like that, dont you? They keep taking pictures because they think that it helps record the moment, but as Henkels latest study has just found out, this obsession may prevent their brains from remembering what actually happened, reported the Guardian. In her study, Henkel led a group of college students around a museum and asked them to simply observe 15 objects and to photograph 15 others. The next day the students memory of the tour was tested, and the results showed that they were less accurate in recognizing the objects and they remembered fewer details about them if they photographed them. When people rely on technology to remember for them counting on the camera to record the event and thus not needing to attend to it fully themselves, it can have a negative impact on how well they remember their experiences, Henkel explained. But there is also an exception: if students zoomed in(放大) to photograph part of an object, their memory actually improved, and those who focused the lens (镜头) on a specific area could even recall parts that werent in the frame. So basically, this study is saying that constantly taking pictures can harm your memory. But shouldnt reviewing pictures we have taken help wake up our memories? This is true, but only if we spend enough time doing it.In order to remember, we have to access and interact with the photos, rather than just amassing them, Henkel told The Telegraph. However, previous research has shown that most people never take the time to look over their digital pictures simply because there are too many of them and they arent usually very organized on their computers.(1)The author mentioned Henkels trip to the Grand Canyon to _. A . describe the great view of the Grand CanyonB . complain about some tourists bad habitsC . point out peoples obsession with taking picturesD . give suggestions on how to enjoy ones tour(2)Which of the following statements about Henkels study is TRUE? A . Taking pictures in a museum tour helps students recognize objects better.B . Reviewing pictures always helps people bring back memories.C . Pictures that focus on the details of objects are likely to improve peoples memories.D . People should spend more time taking pictures than studying real objects.(3)The underlined word amassing in the last paragraph probably means _. A . displayingB . collectingC . ignoringD . remembering(4)What is the article mainly about? A . Some skills to learn for taking pictures.B . Peoples obsession with taking pictures and its influence.C . How pictures remind us of our past.D . How to deal with pictures after taking trips.30. (5分)任务型阅读 When it comes to the letter grade on your test or homework, you might notice that there is no letter E. Have you ever thought about why that is so?In the A, B, C, D and F grading system, the first four letters are typically considered passing grades. An F in this system simply stands for fail. The word fail happens to start with the letter F, which seems to leave out the letter E.The first college in the US to use a letter grading system like the ones we use today is Mount Holyoke College. In 1897, they began to use the following grading scale;A: 95-100% (excellent) B: 85-94% (good) C: 76-84% (fair)D: 75%( nearly passed) E: below 75% (failed)We can see the inclusion of E instead of F.Gradually, the letter grading system became more popular all over the US. However, many schools decided to drop the E grade and go straight to F. There is no evidence(证据) to really support this, but one possible explanation is that teachers were worried that some students and parents might mistake E for excellent. Why do we have letter grades? Well, part of the reason is that they made grading simpler during a time of great change for schools. As the 20th century began, growing cities and an increase in immigration led to larger school classrooms. Most teachers at that time thought this new letter grading system was an easy, fair and clear way to grade students.Today, more and more people think that letter grades dont fully show students learning. However, as teachers try to improve grading methods, many parents continue to prefer the letter grades they got as kids, as they are familiar and easy for parents to understand. So while they might not be perfect, the letter grades probably arent going away any time soon.(1)When was the letter grading system first used in the US college? (2)What is one possible reason for dropping the E grade? (3)If youre a teacher, do you prefer the letter grades? Why or why not? 31.
