Unit 5 Travelling abroad Learning about language课时作业阅读理解AAs an adult, I like nothing better than to sit on the beach reading. If I have a satisfying reading time on the beach, I will be happy for many days. However, Im sad to say it isnt really a thing for children. Most children would rather play in the waves or play with sand. But the truth is that even when children are on vacation, they need reading time that we, adults, look forward to. The method is getting them to sit for 5 or 10 minutes to enjoy the pleasure of reading. Books can probably get wet or filled with sand, They are then pretty much ruined. Some book chapters (章节) may be a little long. Your children may be willing to sit for 10 minutes. However, they may be annoyed at reading if it takes longer than 10 minutes. And if your children are similar to my daughter, they are likely to love reading on the beach. Every time I go to the beach with my daughter, I will bring a magazine for her. Generally, magazines are not too heavy. They can also be thrown away if they get wet. Besides, they provide just the right amount of reading when my daughter is ready to sit under the sun umbrella. Literary (文学的) magazines like Cricket, Spider and Ladybug will allow your children to read wonderful fiction. Discovery magazines like Click, Dig, and Faces have articles on all sorts of topics that will excite and interest your children. And like the short stories in the literary magazines, these articles have the right length (长度) for reading on the beach. So dont leave magazines behind when you pack your bags! That would have been, Kane, a boy. Kane was the two-year-old son of Jolene, my new neighbor. At a glance Kane was a sight. Hed been born with hard sticks for legs. And on that morning I witnessed the effect that Kanes physical shortcomings had on his family. But I also witnessed much more than that.I saw an extraordinary family that embraced this special child. A family that wouldnt allow Kane to know he was different. Jolene had constructed a small cart just a few inches off the floor for his son to get around. Using his hands to move about, Kane moved the cart to “go to” any place just as everyone else was able to do. Kane worked that little cart like a master. Kane was a vital focus of the entire family. He was more than just a member of the family; he was the soul. This child was the driver, the motivator, and the founder of much of the interaction.Much later in my life, I came to realize that God had sent this child to help some of us who just werent getting what love was all about. Even with my limited capacity for understanding at the time that Kane was a highly developed spirit with great wisdom.Kane demanded attention, but not because of his mobility challenges or other apparent shortcomings. In his mind, he had no challenges or shortcomings. The truth is that he received attention because he was alive and real and had so much to offer.Kane was and still is a lot of warm and powerful energy sent to us all, so we might learn that love surpasses all things. Kane, a fragile yet lovely baby, was here to teach us all an important lesson. And at the age of two he did just that.5.How did the author think of Kanes family members?A.They were strange because they locked Kane at home.B.It was respectable for them to start their own business.C.It was ridiculous for them to make a cart for Kane.D.They were greatly brave to face all the difficulties.6.How did Kane “get to” everywhere he wanted to go?A.By moving his cart with his own hands.B.By asking his father to lead him ahead with a stick.C.By asking his grandparents to push hin everywhere.D.His parents specially employed a babysitter for him.7.Kane needed attention because he wanted to show _.A.he can challenge his difficulty in movingB.he had challenges or shortcomings in his lifeC.he himself needed to be looked after by othersD.he had the power to prove he was capable too8.What can we learn from Kanes story?A.Love me, love my dog.B.Love is above all things.C.Many hands make light work.D.Pure gold fears no fire.CLUKLA, NepalQomolangma, known as Mount Everest in the West, once negatively recognized as the “worlds highest junkyard,is set to become cleaner as 30,000 porters(搬运工) have been mobilized(动员)for waste collection and disposal from the mountains southern side. The cleanup drive was launched recently near Lukla Airport, one of the worlds most dangerous airports yet a vital gateway to the worlds highest peak. “Our major task is to keep Everest, which is the pride of the world, clean. This campaign aims to transport 100 tons of nonbumable garbage from the Everest region to Kathmandu in 2018,” Ang Dorje Sherpa, chairman of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee said. The SPCC,an environmental conservation organization, has made it mandatory(强制性的) since 2013 that every climber should carry down 8 kilograms of trash, but for trekkers there is no such regulation. Due to this, more than 100 tons of waste gets collected in the region annually. According to Nepalese government statistics, nearly 50,000 domestic and foreign trekkers visit the Qomolangma region annually, while more than 400 mountaineers attempt to scale the peak. The collected waste mostly includes empty beer bottles and cans, oxygen bottles, tom tents and sleeping bags, food bins, and discarded mountaineering and trekking equipment. The trash was collected by local groups in more than a dozen villages while the waste was transported down the mountain in sacks (麻袋)by porters and animals. The cleanup covered settlements from up to 5,000 meters near the base camp,to Lukla Airport located at an altitude of 2,805 meters. On the first day of the campaign, several tons of waste was sent off to Kathmandu from Lukla on planes belonging to Tara Airlines, one of the leading private airlines in Nepal. The airlines have set an ambitious target of flying out 100 tons of waste from the region in 2018, as a part of its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals against climate change. The companys CEO Umesh Chandra Rai said,“We hope that this campaign will help the local people to maintain a pristine (未受损害的), natural and unspoiled environment so that more trekkers will come from everywhere, making the trekking industry here more sustainable.9.Whats the first paragraph mainly about?A.The basic situation of Mount Everest.B.The introduction of the cleanup campaign.C.The unique way to prevent environmental pollution.D.The description of the most dangerous airport in the world.10.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.The rule for visitors made by the local travel agencies.B.The cleanup campaign launched by Ang Dorje Sherpa.C.The demand on the climbers made by the SPCC.D.The law for the local people made by the Nepalese government.11.How does the author indicate that the cleanup campaign is very tough?A.By listing figures.B.By making comparisons.C.By giving some examples.D.By analyzing some causes.12.Whats Umesh Chandra Rais attitude towards the cleanup campaign?A.Doubtful.B.Curious.C.Enthusiastic.D.Unfavorable.DWinnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne Winnie-the-Pooh has been introduced and reintroduced to generation after generation as a model of a childs best friend. However, not everyone has found Pooh is lovely. This classic has been banned (禁止) in a variety of countries at one point or another, including Russia, Turkey, and even its home, England. In fact, even some places in the United States have banned this book! So why would anyone ever like to keep children from the joy of Milnes classic?
