2019-2020学年高一英语上学期课练七Dear Friend,The recent success of childrens books has made the general public aware that theres a huge market out there. And theres a growing need for new writers trained to create the $3 billion worth of childrens books bought each year plus stories and articles needed by over 650 publishers of magazines for children and teenagers.Who are these needed writers? Theyre ordinary folks like you and me.But am I good enough?I was once where you might be now. My thoughts of writing had been pushed down by self-doubt, and I didnt know where to turn for help. Then, I accepted a free offer from the Institute to test my writing ability, and it turned out to be the inspiration I needed. The promise that paid offThe Institute made the same promise to me that they will make to you, if you show basic writing ability:You will plete at least one manuscript(手稿)suitable to hand in to a publisher by the time you finish our course.I really didnt expect any publication before I finished the course, but that happened. I sold three stories. And I soon discovered that was not unusual at the Institute.Since graduation, I have authored 34 nationally published childrens books and over 300 stories and articles.Free test and brochureWe offer a free ability test and will send you a copy of our brochure(小册子)describing our recognized home-study courses on the basis of one-on-one training.Realize your writing dream today. Theres nothing sadder than a dream delayed until it fades forever.Sincerely,Kristi Hill, InstructorInstitute of Childrens Literature1. The first two paragraphs tell us that _.A. magazines for children and teenagers have drawn public attentionB. there is a growing need for writers of childrens booksC. publishers are making $3 billion each yearD. childrens books are usually bestsellers2. You are promised to publish one manuscript when you _.A. show basic ability B. finish the courseC. have sold three stories D. have passed the test3. Kristi Hill mentions her own experience mainly to _.A. prove she is a qualified instructor B. introduce the home-study coursesC. show she has realized her dream D. promote the writing programIn ancient Egypt, the pharaoh(法老) treated the message runner like a prince when he arrived at the palace, if he brought good news. However, if the exhausted runner had the misfortune to bring the pharaoh unhappy news, his head was cut off.Shades of that spirit spread over todays conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut butter and sandwiches for an outing. As we walked light-heartedly out of the door, picnic basket in hand, a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said, “Oh boy, bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says its going to rain.” I wanted to strike him on the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, but for his smile.Several months ago I was racing to catch a bus. As I breathlessly put my handful of cash across the Greyhound counter, the sales agent said with a broad smile, “Oh, that bus left five minutes ago.” Dreams of head cutting! Its not the news that makes someone angry. Its the unsympathetic attitude with which its delivered. Everyone must give bad news from time to time, and winning professionals do it with the proper attitude. A doctor advising a patient that she needs an operation does it in a caring way. A boss informing an employee he didnt get the job takes on a sympathetic tone. Big winners know, when delivering any bad news, they should share the feeling of the receiver.Unfortunately, many people are not aware of this. When youre tired from a long flight, has a hotel clerk cheerfully said that your room isnt ready yet? When you had your heart set on the toast beef, has your waiter merrily told you that he just served the last piece? It makes you as a traveler or diner want to land your fist right on their unsympathetic faces.Had my neighbor told me of the uping rainstorm with sympathy, I would have appreciated his warning. Had the Greyhound salesclerk sympathetically informed me that my bus had already left, I probably would have said, “Oh, thats all right. Ill catch the next one.” Big winners, when they bear bad news, deliver bombs with the emotion the bombarded(被轰炸的)person is sure to have.4. What is the main idea of the text?A. Delivering bad news with sympathy is important in munication.B. Helping others sincerely is the key to business success.C. Receiving bad news requires great courage. D. Learning ancient traditions can be useful.CQixi Festival, the Chinese equivalent of Valentines Day that fell yesterday, was not only a disappointment for forgotten lovers, but also for businessmen left with empty pockets. The cold reception has prompted cultural experts to seriously worry that the lovers festival, marked for generations since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220),is dying out. Some have even called for legislation to make the festival a legal Chinese Lovers Day, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar year. But the effectiveness of such a measure is in doubt, although efforts to preserve traditional festivals deserve highly praise.A growing number of traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, share the same fate of the Qixi Festival.Young people are showing less interest in traditional culture as symbolized by these festivals. Even if all traditional festivals are finally made legal, the risk of them being purely formalized celebrations with little meaning is not removed. If the younger generation fails to identify with the cultural significance of these holidays, there is little that can be done. While plaining about traditional festivals fading appeal, decision-makers should reflect on cultural protection. Undeniably, our country has done a bad job of preserving culture and traditional festivals, pared to neighbouring Japan and the Republic of Korea(ROK).The 2,500-year-old Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The traditional customs and ceremonies of the occasion, which originated in China, have been better preserved in the ROK.Only a few years ago did China begin to realize the significance of preserving intangible(无形的)cultural heritage when the ROK planned to apply to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to list its version of the Dragon Boat Festival as an important example of intangible culture.Concern about the traditional holidays also reminds people of the growing influence of foreign cultures as the country opens wider to the outside world. With traditional festivals being less important and imports such as Christmas and Valentines Day gaining widespread popularity, the public including cultural professionals have tended to measure traditional Chinese festivals in economic terms.Business rather than culture has begun to play a dominant role. More and more people are preoccupied with how much money can be made during the holidays. In fact, what makes traditional festivals unique and what keeps them alive is their cultural elements. After all, it is unique culture that contributes to the worlds diversity with globalization.8. What makes Chinese cultural experts worry that the lovers festival is dying out?A. The disappointment for both businessmen and lovers.B. The cold reacting of the public to Qixi Festival.C. The failure to make traditional Chinese festivals legal.D. The action to preserve culture and traditional festivals.9. The public look at the effectiveness of the legalization of the Qixi Festival with a(n) _ attitude.A. indifferent B. positive C. doubtful D. hopeful10. From Paragraph 5 we can learn that _.A. traditional festivals are thought more highly of by the young people.B. legal celebrations reduce the risk of disappearing of traditional culture.C. the significance of traditional festivals should be more identified with.D. young people value traditional culture more while they can do little.11. The writers purpose for writing this article is to _.A. remind us that the cultural elements make traditional festivals live on.B. plain that Japan and ROK do a better job in preserving culture.C. inform the public of the dying out of traditional Chinese festivals.D. warn people against business role in celebrating traditional festivals.Online Friends and LoveIn so many ways, cyberspace mirrors the real world. _12_ Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love. Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a puter screen. Identity (身份) and appearance mean very little in cyberspace. _13_ So even the shyest person can bee a chat-room star. Usually, this “faceless” munication doesnt create problems. Identity doesnt really matter when youre in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies and it makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation. Where else can so many people e together to chat about their interests? _14_ Theyre looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others fail miserably.Supporter of online relationships claim that the Internet allows couples to get to know each other. Personal appearance doesnt get in the way. But critics of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. Why? _15_ Internet users can carefully make their words fit whatever image they want to give. In a sense, theyre not really themselves. All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace. _16_ With so many unknowns, its easy to let ones imagination “fill in the blanks”. This leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll: “Life in the real world is far richer than anything youll find on a puter screen.”A.When we talk with others on the line, we can express ourselves freely.B.But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with.C.People ask for information, play games and share hobby tips.D.Generally speaking, online friends and love are worth seeking for.E.Because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them.F.Rather, a persons thoughts or at least the thoughts they type are what really count.G.But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship.第一节 完形填空(共20小题, 每小题1分,共20分)I was born in New York City. A. held B. chose C. changed D. foundPeople are interested in eating raw foods or whole foods partly because eating these types of food reduces the risk of acid accumulation(酸堆积)in our body.Raw and whole foods are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and processed foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes(酶)that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes, our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream. In both cases, the result is obesity. When too many nutrients are absorbed at once, the body grows fat.Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the appetite system that tells us when weve had enough to eat; as a result, people often overeat. Processed foods also upset the digestive cycle. The body will either identify these foods as allergens and then store them safely away from the organs as fat, or the remains of undigested food will bee acidic and enter the bloodstream as acid waste, which will stick to the blood vessel walls(血管壁)and block the passage of vital oxygen and nutrients heading for the bodys cells. The bodys metabolism(新陈代谢)bees inactive, and the result is weight gain and obesity. To stop this vicious circle in its tracks, people need to consume food and supplements that will balance the acid already accumulated in body. Eating the right types of raw and whole foods can help. Its also important to restore our enzyme balance. We need to identify and avoid the foods that cause acid accumulation and consume the foods that increase enzyme production. If we truly want to change and help our body heal itself, we need to take an active approach.41. We can learn from the 2nd paragraph that _.A. it is essential for us to digest some fatB. cooked and processed foods are healthierC. foods with natural enzymes help us keep fitD. absorbing many nutrients is beneficial to our health42. Processed foods will probably _.A. stop bodys metabolism B. be difficult to digestC. destroy bodys cells D. lead to obesity43. To change and help our body heal itself, we need to _.A. consume enough acid foodsB. identify enzyme productionC. avoid restoring our enzyme balanceD. eat the right types of raw and whole foodsOver the last 25 years, British society has changed a great deal or at least many parts of it have.1. Ideas about social class whether a person is “working - class” or “middle - class” are one area in which changes have been extremely slow.In the past, the working-class tended to be paid less than middle-class people. The typical working man would collect his wages on Friday evening and then, it was widely believed, having given his wife her housekeeping, would go out and squander the rest on beer and betting. The old style of what a middle-class man did with his money was perhaps nearer the truth. He was-and still is - inclined to take a longer-term view. Not only did he regard buying a house as a most important thing, but he also considered the education of his children as extremely important.小题2 .Only in very few cases did workers have the opportunity (or the education and training) to make such long-term plans.小题3. In a large number of cases factory workers earn as much as their middle class supervisors (管理者). Social security and laws to improve century, have made it less necessary than before to worry about tomorrow. Working-class people seem slowly to be losing the feeling of inferiority(自卑感). In fact there has been a growing tendency in the past few years for the middle-classes to feel slightly ashamed of their position.小题4.They generally tend to share very similar tastes in music and clothes, they spend their money in having a good time, and save for holidays or longer-term plans when necessary. There seems to be much less difference than in precious generations.小题5. As long as this gap exists, there will always be a possibility that new conflicts and jealousies will emerge, or rather that the old conflicts will re-appear, but between different groups.ANowadays, a great deal has changedBBoth of these provided him and his family with securityCAs a result, differences in life styles and attitudes came into existenceDHowever, we still have a wide gap between the well paid and the low - paidEIn recent years, the working class people have begun to design long term plansFIn some ways, however, very little has changed, particularly where attitudes are concernedGThe changes in both life styles and attitudes are probably most easily seen among younger people.第二节 语法填空(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)Hardly can you succeed_41_doing something very well the first time you do it. Although I still dont consider_45_(me) a perfect one, Im much more confident behind the wheel than_46_I was when I started. In general, it is useless working hard for doing something_47_(perfect)when you do it for the first time. You_48_(be) setting the bar so high that you just feel bad when you are unable to meet the level you have set. Also, perfection is just another way_49_(delay), so trying to be perfect is just_50_waste of time.
