New Caledonian crows actually do understand how to make water displacement work to their advantage, experiments showed. The results suggest that the birds are, at least in some aspects, as smart as first-graders, according to the study.Researchers, led by Sarah Jelbert at the university of Auckland in New Zealand, presented six crows with tubes filled with water. Inside the tubes, a worm or piece of meat on a piece of wood was floating, just out of reach of the crow. In front of the tubes, the researchers arranged a bunch of heavy rubber erasers that would sink, and light plastic objects that would float. The crows found out that they could drop the heavy objects into the tubes in order to raise the water level and get their snack. However, the birds handled awkwardly in experiments in which they could choose to drop objects in either a wide tube or a narrow tube to get a snack, the researchers said. Dropping objects into narrow tube would lift the water level by a greater amount and put the treat within reach after just two drops. In contrast, it took around seven drops to raise the snack to the same level in the wide tube. The crows obviously didnt realize this, and most of them went for the wide tube first.Previous studies showed that chimps and human children can solve similar tasks. In a 2011 study, chimps and kids found out that they could put water into a tube to reach a peanut that was floating in small amount of water at the bottom. 24. What does the text focus on? A. But the British, when they are in Britain, do not regard themselves as Europeans. The Europeans, to them, are those rather excitable foreigners from the other side of the English Channel, who have never learnt how to speak English. Europe is “the Continent”:a place full of interest for British tourists, but also the source of almost all the wars in which Britain has ever been involved. Thus, although geographically speaking Britain is a part of Europe, yet the fact that it is a separate island has made its people feel very, very insular (孤立的). They feel, and in many ways are, different from the rest of Europe and they sometimes annoy continental nations by failing to support them, or even to understand them, in time of need.Where did the British people e from? This is an extraordinary interesting question, since they are a mixture of many different races, and all these races invaded Britain at various times from Europe. Nobody knows very much about Britain before the Romans came during the first century BC., but there had been at least three invasions before that. The first of these was by a darkhaired Mediterranean race called the Iberians. The other two were by Celtic tribes: first the Gaels, whose descendants are the modern Scots and Irish, some of whom still speak the Gaelic language;and second the Britons, who gave their name to the whole island of Britain. These were the people whom the Romans conquered. The Romans gave the Britons a good deal of their civilization, but they never settled in Britain in very large numbers, so the British race survived until the overthrow of the Roman Empire by the“barbarians”, ie. the numerous Germanic tribes which overran the whole of Western Europe.28The purpose of the passage is to_Atalk about EuropeansBdiscuss the origin of British peopleCargue for the superiority of British peopleDpare the Europeans with Africans and Asians29It can be known from the passage that_Amost people think white people are EuropeansBthere are many Africans and Asians living in EuropeCwhite men are Europeans in the eyes of Africans and AsiansDthe British people think of themselves as Europeans30Why do the British people feel very insular?AThey are different from those people in the continent.BThey sometimes fail to support the continental countries in time of need.CThey are separated geographically from the continent.DThey are considered very difficult to understand.31Which of the following might be discussed after this passage?AThe Germanic tribes which invaded Britain.BThe civilization the Romans gave Britain.CThe Romans who did not settle in Britain.DThe survival of the British people in the first century.DFinally , a cell phoneThats a phoneWith rates as low as $3.75 per week !“ Well , I finally did it .
