第卷第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AMany people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of ones own. Then, in the country one can rest from the noise and hurry of the town. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend ones free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables e up, one has the reward of one who has shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dancehalls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnights (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want; the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night. 21Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. People who like country things prefer to live outside the city. B. People who work in London prefer to live in the country. C. Because of certain disadvantages of living outside London, some people who work in London prefer to live inside London. D. Because of certain advantages of living outside London, many people who work in London prefer to live outside London. 22. One can use the same money for _ to buy a little house with a garden in the country.A. getting a small flat with a garden B. having a small flat with a gardenC. renting a small flat without a garden D. buying a small flat without a garden 23. When the flowers and vegetables in the garden e up, those _ have the reward of one who has shared the secret of Nature. A. who live in the country B. who have spent time working in the garden C. who have a garden of their ownD. who have been digging, planting and watering 24. People who think happiness lies in the town would feel that _ if they had to live it outside London. A. their life was meaningless B. their life was invaluable C. they didnt deserve a happy lifeD. they were not worthy of their happy life BA serious problem for todays society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem. First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a pany must take lifelong responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a mercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs. Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor. In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. Furthermore, some in-situation should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a fortable life for them. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young. One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent. To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some bination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.25. What can be concluded from the passage? A. There is no single solution to the problems of the old. B. Employers should allow their workers to retire at a later age. C. Being independent should be the goal of most old people. D. Taking care of the old is mainly an issue of money.26. The text is most likely to be found in a book about_. A. historical events B. social science C. political problem D. political systems27. What is the writers main purpose in writing this article? A. To point out the need for government support for old people. B. To make general readers aware of the problems of retired people. C. To discuss some possible solutions to an important social problem. D. To instruct retired people on how they can have a happier life.C It is true that human beings need some rest to stay alive, but it doesnt matter when and how much a person sleeps. And thats what all doctors thought , until they heard about Herpin. Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves. When the doctors paid a visit to him in his home in New Jersey, he was 90 years old. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw him sleeping. In fact , he did not even own a bed. He never needed one. The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a fortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure. Herpin died at the age of 94.28. The main idea of this passage is that_.A. a person was found who actually didnt need any sleepB. large numbers of people do not need sleepC. everyone needs some sleep to stay aliveD. people can live longer by trying not to sleep29. The doctors called on Herpin, expecting_.A. to cure him of his sleeplessnessB. to find a way to free people from the need of sleepingC. to find out why some old people did not need any sleepD. to find that his sleeplessness was not really true30. After watching him closely, the doctors came to believe that Herpin_.A. needed some kind of sleep B. needed no sleep at all C.was too old to need any sleep D. often slept in a chair31. Herpins condition could be regarded as _.A. a mon one B. one that could be cured C. an unusual one D. very healthy D Some time ago , I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg I didnt think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended , as there were a whole lot of antique shops near my home So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception I was quite wrong The man wouldnt even look at my chair The second shop , though slightly more polite , was just the same , and the third, and the fourthso I decided that my approach must be wrong I went into the fifth shop with a plan in my mind I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper , “ Would you like to buy a chair ?” He looked it over carefully and said, “Yes , not a bad chair How much do you want for it , sir ?” “Twenty pounds ,” I said “OK ,” he said , “Ill give you twenty pounds ” “Its got a slightly broken leg ,”I said “Yes I saw that , its nothing ”Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited “What will you do with it ?” I asked “Oh , it will be easy to sell once the repair is done ” “Ill buy it ,” I said “ What do you mean ? Youve just sold it to me ,” he said “Yes , I know but Ive changed my mind Im sorry , Ill give you twenty-seven pounds for it ” “You must be crazy ,” he saidThen suddenly the penny dropped “ I know what you want You want me to repair your chair” “ Youre right ,” I said “ And what would you have done if I had walked in and said , Would you mend this chair for me ?” “I wouldnt have agreed to do it ,” he said “We dont do repairs , not enough money in it and too much trouble But Ill mend this for you , shall we say for a five?” He was a very nice man and was greatly amused (感到有趣) by the whole thing 32We can learn from the text that in the first shop the writer _.Aasked the shopkeeper to repair his chair Bwas warmly received Casked the shopkeeper to buy his chair Dwas rather impolite33The expression “the penny dropped” in the last paragraph means the shopkeeper Achanged his mind Bsaw the writers purposeCaccepted the offer Ddecided to help the writer 34How much did the writer pay ?A20 B7 C5 D2735From the text , we can learn that the writer was _. We dont have enough water, oil or forest in many places. On the other hand, people keep cutting down more trees and letting out more carbon dioxide. At the same time, everyone can see that the environment is getting worse. People suffer from more disastrous weather such as typhoons and tornados nowadays. Whats worse, air and water pollution is being more and more serious. In my opinion,we students should do something to stop wasting. We can save food, water, paper, electricity, etc. in our daily life. Meanwhile,we should take buses instead of cars, refuse to use chopsticks which are only used once and should not use plastic bags.
