AThere are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other forts of life, one bees happy and the other bees unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing(批评) and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation(模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit. Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most mon politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact(接触) with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one bees mixed up in their quarrels. 21. People who are unhappy _. A. always consider things differently from othersB. usually are affected by the results of certain things C. usually misunderstand what others think or sayD. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things22. The phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means “_”.A. have a good taste with social lifeB. make others unhappyC. tend to please others openly D. enjoy the pleasure of life23. We can conclude from the passage that _.A. we should pity all such unhappy people B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social lifeC. people can get rid of the habit of unhappinessD. unhappy people can not understand happy persons24. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should _.A. prevent any munication with them B. show no respect and politeness to themC. persuade them to recognize the bad effectsD. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakesBIt is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are being horribleEverybody knows that the nicest men would bee fierce tigers behind the wheelIt is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the drivers seat is another matter altogether.Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense tooIt takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude drivingOn the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fightingA friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditionBut such behaviors of politeness are by no means enoughMany drivers nowadays dont even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerousTypical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oning cars that may be not able to stop in timeThe same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want toIt always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies (奶奶).An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelingsUnfortunately, modern drivers cant even learn to driveYears ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road usersIt is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.25According to the passage, troubles on the road are often caused by .Aroad conditions Bthe behavior of the driversCthe speed of modern life Dthe large number of cars26In the writers opinion, .Aunskillful drivers should be punished Bstrict traffic rules are badly needed Cdrivers should show road politeness properlyD. drivers should avoid traffic jams27 The underlined word “give-and-take” in the passage means .Apoliteness and impolitenessBgood manners and bad manners Cwillingness to give in to each others wishesDoffering help to others as much as possible28What is the best title of the passage?ATraffic Problems BRoad Politeness CBad Manners on the Road DGood Drivers and Bad Drivers C Climate change, pollution, overuse of water and development are killing some of the worlds most famous rivers including Chinas YangtzeIndias Ganges and Africas NileWWF said on TuesdayAt the global launch of its report “Worlds Top 10 Rivers at Risk”,the group said many rivers could dry out. affecting hundreds of millions of people and killing unique aquatic(水生的)life “If these rivers die, millions will lose their livelihoods, biodiversity(生物多样性)will be destroyed on a massive scale, there will be less fresh water and agriculture, resulting in less food security,”saidRayi Singh, secretarygeneral of WWFIndiaThe report, launched ahead of“World Water Day”today, alsocited the Rio Grande inthe United States, the Mekong and Indus in Asia,Europes Danube, La Plata in South America and Australias MurrayDarling as in need of greater protection Rivers are the worlds main source of fresh water and WWF says about half of the available supply is already being used upDams have destroyed habitats and cut rivers off from their flood plainswhile climate change could affect the seasonal water flows that feed them, the report saidFish populations, the top source of protein and overall life support for hundreds of thousands of munities worldwide, are also being threatened, it foundThe Yangtze basin is one of the most polluted rivers in the world because of decades of heavy industrialization, damming and huge influxes(流入)of sediment (积淀)from land conversion. Aa magazine Ba newspaper Can organization Da reportD Twenty years ago, most experts believed that differences in how boys and girls behaved were mainly due to differences in how they were treated by their parents, teachers, and friends. Its hard to cling to that belief today. Recent research has shown that there are biological differences between boys and girls. Understanding these differences is important in raising and educating children. For example, girls are born with more sensitive hearing than boys, and the difference increases as kids grow up. So when a grown man speaks to a girl in what he thinks is a normal voice, she may hear it as yelling. Conversely (反过来), boys who appear to be inattentive in class may just be sitting too far away too hear the teacher. Likewise, girls are better in their expression of feelings. Studies reveal that negative emotions are seated in an area of the brain called the amygdala. Girls develop all early connection between this area and the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层), enabling them to talk about their feelings. In boys these links develop later. So if you ask a troubled adolescent boy to tell you what his feelings are, he often cannot say much. Dr. Sax, an advocate of single-sex education, points out that keeping boys and girls separate in the classroom has yielded striking educational, social, and interpersonal benefits. Therefore, parents and teachers should try to recognize, understand, and make use of the biological differences that make a girl a girl, and a boy a boy. 32What is the main idea of the passage? A. Boys tend to pay less attention in class than girls. B. Girls are better than boys in their ability to detect sounds. C. Single-sex schools are not good because they keep boys and girls separate. D. Boys and girls behave differently because of biological differences. 33Why do girls express negative feelings better than boys? A. Girls are more emotional than boys. B. The links between certain parts of the brain develop earlier in girls than in boys. C. The amygdala is located in different areas of the brain for boys and girls. D. Girls have more brain cells than boys.34Which of the following does the author believe? A. Boys and girls should be educated in different ways. B. Girls need more training in munication. C. Parents should pay more attention to boys. D. Sex differences should be ignored in education。35What does the phase “cling to” in the first paragraph mean?
