His father wanted him to take over the family business when he grew up, but he wasnt interested. To help Ben decide on a career, Josiah took him on long walks around Boston so he could observe men doing the work of their trade. Benjamin learned how to do many things during these excursions, but he didnt want to pursue(追求,追赶) any of the trades. When Ben was twelve years old his father sent him to his older brother James, who was a printer. Ben worked twelve hours a day in the printing shop, but still found time to educate himself. Though he only had two years of formal schooling, he taught himself foreign languages and read books on grammar, science, and math.Later Ben went to Philadelphia. He started his own successful printing business and published a newspaper. He refused to patent(注册专利) the Franklin stove and the lightning rod because he thought more people would benefit from the inventions if he did not patent them.He proved that lightning and electricity are the same thing using a kite, string, and key in a thunderstorm. But, believe it or not, they were emotionally whole when they were born. A few weeks ago I came across a seven-month-old baby boy, whose emotions reflected immediately on his face. He didnt hide his feeling. However, about the time kids begin to walk and talk, their parents start to repress (压制) them. For example, many parents discourage the so-called negative emotions such as fear, sadness and anger. They believe that if they can make the children act happily and well behaved, they will bee truly happy and well-adjusted adults. To some degree, this management of emotions applies to both sexes. When boys or girls show feelings that their parents think are improper, their parents find some ways to repress them. Depending on their parenting style, they may ignore their children, shame them, educate them, distract them, or even physically punish them. It is rare to see a child who has never suffered from some forms of parental repression. But in general, little boys are required restrict even more of their emotions than little girls. Men in this society are given three traditional roles: providing, protecting, and procreating (生育). In order to perform those roles, little boys are required to repress more of their emotions. Boys are raised according to a set of masculine (男性化的) principles, some beliefs that influence how they think feel, and behave. These principles encourage boys to be petitive, focus on success, stand physical pain, and repress their emotions. When boys fail to achieve these things, it is not unmon for them to be laughed at, or shamed. Societys goal is not to cause emotional injury to the boys but to harden them to face the difficulties men have always had to face.12. The author mentions the seven-month-old baby boy in the first paragraph to show that _.A. not all men are emotionally blockedB. men are not born to repress their feelingsC. babies are sensitive to the people around themD. babies are better at expressing feeling than adults13. Which of the following shows how parents shame a child?A. Go Play with your toys.B. All right young man! Youre going to get the belt!C. Did that big dog scare you? Look, theres a bird!D. When you cry like that, you sound like your baby sister.14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Men are more valued than women in society.B. Men are performing too many roles in society.C. Men are not allowed to express their feelings in social life.D. Great social pressure forces men to repress their feelings.15. What would be the best title for the text?A. Why men repress their emotionsB. How men can be successful in societyC. Why masculine principles are importantD. How men can express themselves more freely二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共15.0分) How to Bee Best Friends with Your Dormmates Do you feel nervous and stressful about living in the dormitory?
