Although he broke his leg when jumping from the Presidents box seat to the stage, Booth escaped from the theater with his panion.Five hours later, they knocked on the door of Samuel Mudd, a doctor living in Southern Maryland. Dr. Mudd knew nothing about the assassination(暗杀) of the President, and acting as any doctor would, set the leg and persuaded the two travelers to stay in his house for the rest of the night.Because of this merciful act, Dr. Mudd was arrested and tried on the charge that he was a friend of Booths and therefore helped plan the assassination. Dr. Mudd insisted that he knew nothing of the plot. But the court, angry at the Presidents death, sentenced the unfortunate doctor to life imprisonment. Dr. Mudd was imprisoned at Port Jefferson, an island fortress (要塞) 。As horrible and unjust as this punishment must have been, a greater plight secretly presented itself at Port Jefferson. The warm and wet climate was a perfect breeding (繁殖) ground for mosquitoes. Again and again ,these pests spread, yellow fever germs (病菌) to prisoners and guards alike. When the fever struck, Dr. Mudd volunteered his services, because no one else on the island could treat the disease. In spite of the fact that the guards and other prisoners called him “that Lincoln murderer”, and treated him very badly, he worked hard, even after he was infected(传染)himself.Meanwhile, his wife was working heroically in Washington for her husbands cause. After a four-year struggle, she secured a pardon for himfor a crime he never mitted.Soon after Dr. Mudd regained his freedom, Port Jefferson was abandoned. Today, the one-time prison sits in ruins, occupied only by birds and mosquitoes.24. Why was Dr. Mudd put in prison?A.He helped Booth escape. B. He was the only doctor at Port Jefferson.D. He thought it would help get him a pardon.27.Which word can be used to describe Dr.Mudd?A. Greedy. B. Generous. C. Careless. D. Optimistic.CNuclear power is currently produced by fission (裂变) .This method produces dangerous by-products which are difficult to get rid of. Fusion(聚变) ,on the other hand, is a relatively safe process which does not rely on dangerous fuels. Most people have heard of Einsteins formula, E=mc, but what does it mean? In fact, it is a description of how mass is turned into energy, and it is this energy that powers the stars, including our own sun. If we can reproduce this process on earth, we will have an unlimited source of energy which does not rely on fossil fuels such as coal, gas or oil. One source of fuel for nuclear fusion is deuterium, which is found in ordinary water. Traditional ways of producing power are wasteful. Typically, 60-90% of the energy produced is lost, meaning that we can only use 10-40%.There is also the problem of waste materials and pollution. Nuclear fusion is more than ten million times more efficient (高效的) than burning coal as a source of energy. The main difficulty in recreating the process of fusion on earth is the extremely high temperature which must be produced. Fusion occurs naturally in the sun ,which is at a temperature of ten million K. This temperature must then be kept long enough for the reaction to take place. The first machine to reach the required temperature was the Tokamak, which was developed by Russian scientists in 1968.The Tokamak is a chamber(室)surrounded by magnets (磁铁) ,which create a strong electric current. The Tokamak could only keep this temperature for a few milliseconds, but this was the first time it had been achieved. Scientists are now working to increase the temperature It seems that it may be only a matter of time before we are able to produce enough power for all our needs, from a plentiful source, without causing damage to the planet. If so, imagine the benefits it would bring. 28. Which of the following may nuclear fusion need?A. Coal. B. Gas. C. Oil. D.Water. 29. How does the author develop the third paragraph?A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing a problem.C. By making parisons. D. By explaining an experiment. 30. What does the author think of the Tokamak?A. It was a total failure.B. It had no practical role.C. It produced enough power for fusion.D. It provided a basis for further research. 31. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to ?A. Fission. B. Fusion. C. The planet. D. The temperature DVictorian gentlemen tipped their hats to show respect, and ladies waved fans to show elegance .It was the fashion to have calling cards, which were like business cards but fancier. When you dropped by someones house, you left your card on a tray(托盘) by the door. To show that youd e in person rather than sending a servant ,you folded the cards top right corner. Folding the top left corner meant congratulations, the bottom left, condolences (哀悼)。These customs sound pleasing but also exhausting. Whod want to return to the period of the delicate creature who spent her days in her parlor(客厅) or under a sun umbrella? Wearing gloves all the time would make it difficult to text and the constant fainting (晕厥) would really restrict ones behavior. But not all of the times many rules focused on appearance and ceremony. Some experts advised not turning you back on someone, paying attention to the little things that might make a guest feel more fortable, and governing yourself to be patient. The code served as a mutual agreement on how to treat people with consideration and respect, avoid offense and make others feel relaxed. In our age of admiration for those who are loud, proud and headstrong, niceness can be connected with weakness. The Victorians, however, knew that good manners were a sign of strength. Politeness often goes hand in hand with self-discipline(自律),requiring us to hold our tongues, take our time, delay our own satisfaction to meet another persons needs. When we greet the world with kindness and expect kindness in return, we know were not alone. Most of us dont have time to host afternoon at-homes with a silver tea service, and our friends would probably be too busy to attend anyway. That shouldnt keep us from bringing more politeness to our 21st-century lives. We can take more interest in each others conversation, honor others opinions, or let someone else be first in line. However troubled our modern times ,we can make politeness our calling card, reminding those around us , You matter.32. What might be the purpose of the first paragraph?A. To introduce the topic of niceness.B. To stress the importance of politeness.C. To show the history of customs in the UK.D. To encourage people to behave like the Victorians. 33. Which corner of a calling card should be folded to show sympathy in the Victorian period?A. The top left corner. B. The top right corner.C. The bottom left corner. D. The bottom right corner. 34.What can be inferred about Victorian women?A. They were in poor health. B.They always wore a pair of gloves.C.They couldnt greet guests outside. D.They had no interest in outdoor activities. 35. What should we learn from the Victorians?A. To be kind to others. B.To have a delicate life.C.To be proud of ourselves. D.To ignore others weaknesses.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 When I was a preteen, I was very focused on looks and clothes, and, as most preteen and teenage females are, trying to be “pretty.”36 But it also gets me thinking about how the importance of looks is drilled into us from early on. In movies and shows, the actresses are not only just made to look beautiful, but their characters are usually praised for their looks by others frequently. 37 It seems life is better or love is easier to find just because you are pretty.Back to my personal story, I got diagnosed (诊断) with a skin condition called vitiligo in the middle of junior high . Vitiligo caused large white spots on my legs and neck. I started to wear long jeans as often as possible to cover my legs. 38 I tried everything I could to hide my vitiligo. Two years ago, I finally decided to stop hiding my skin disease with jeans and just wear shorts, skirts and dresses. I stopped using makeup to cover my vitiligo and just accepted my body the way that it was.39 That summer program did not only improve my self-esteem(自尊) but also made me more ambitious. I became concerned with taking on a heavy course load, getting a job and doing more munity service. Looks just stopped mattering so much to me when I realized how many more things I could be doing .And I stopped being so caught up in trying to make my legs and neck “pretty.”40 .A.
