What makes one person a genius(天才), like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear. We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to bee dull and unintelligent.Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”21. The words “intelligent” and “brilliant” in the first paragraph probably mean _ while “dull” in the second paragraph means _.A. bright and splendid; slow in thinking and understandingB. pretty and handsome; ordinary-lookingC. great and important; monD. hopeful and helpful; careless22. According to the context we can guess that a genius is _ while an idiot is _.A. a normal person; a funny personB. a strong person; a weak personC. a highly intelligent person; a foolish or weak-minded personD. a famous person; an ordinary person23. A person _ is more likely to bee a genius.A. whose parents are cleverB. often thinking about difficult problemsC. often helped by his parents and teachersD. born with a good brain and putting it into active use24. It is better for parents _.A. to praise and encourage their children more oftenB. to be hard on their childrenC. to leave their children alone with nothing to doD. to give their children as much help as possible25. Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?A. Parents play an important part in their childrens growth.B. The less you use your mind the duller you may bee.C. Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.D. What makes a person bright or stupid is still under discussion. BMr. Fitzpatrick has given much attention to his “Weight reduction” (减轻体重) programs. Just last year, for example, when he was the main speaker at the pany dinner, he said he put on twenty pounds instead of losing thirty he promised he would. The year before that, he joined a health club. He exercised every day and ate less food. At the end of three months, however, he began making excuses about why he couldnt go there more often. After the health club failed to work, he joined Weight Watchers but stopped going because he was the only man there. And he hated following any of the diet programs. Fitzs latest idea is to join a walking club to “walk off” the weight.26. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercises and brain development. Judy Camerson, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels(血管),including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to think better. As she says, “While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.” The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can result from a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning.” says Margaret. Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors who have a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not be too simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as with yoga or taichi helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brains flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.29. What is the main idea of this passage? A. How exercise makes people strong. B. How to get good scores in a test. C. How exercise helps the brain develop. D. How the brain can change ones memory.30. According to the passage, what is the connection between exercise and brain development? A. Exercise helps soften our blood vessels. B. Physical exercise helps us think better. C. The brain needs special mental exercise. D. The more exercise, the bigger the brain.31. For ordinary people, the smallest amount of exercise required to gain any benefit is _.A. two hours per week B. 40 hours per week C. three hours per week D. 40 hours per month32. Why is yoga suggested for seniors? A. It does good to the joints of old people. B. It does not increase the heart rate. C. It includes learning new actions. D. It can be done in groups. DIf you wish to bee a better reader, here are four important points to remember about rate, or speed, of reading:1.
