Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book off the shelf and found himself attracted by the notes in the margin (页边). The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind. In front of the book, he discovered the previous owners name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort, he located her address. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. During the next year and one month, the two grew to know each other through the mail. A romance was developing. John requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldnt matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting 7:00 p.m. at Grand Central Station in New York. “Youll recognize me,” she wrote, “by the red rose Ill be wearing on my coat.” So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose. A young woman in a green suit was ing towards him, her figure long and slim and her eyes were blue as flowers. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, and just at this moment he saw Hollis Maynell a woman well past 40. The girl was walking quickly away. He felt as though he was at a loss, so eager was his desire to follow her, and yet so deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly acpanied him and upheld his own. He did not hesitate. He squared his shoulders and said, “Im John, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?” The woman smiled, “I dont know what this is about, son,” she answered, “but the young lady in the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should tell you she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!” Its not difficult to admire wisdom. She was that child star the sweet little girl whose movies helped brighten some of the darkest days the US has known during the Great Depression. It is hard today to imagine the hit that was Shirley “Americas Little Darling”. She sang and danced her way to the top of the box office in such films as Bright Eyes, Curly Top and Heidi. By 1940, she had appeared in 43 films. Temple teamed with Bill “Bojangles” Robinson in four movies, and their tap dance on a staircase in The Little Colonel is still a legendary (传奇性的) film moment. She even has an Oscar statuette. Temple received a special honorary Academy Award in 1934 for her outstanding contributions as a child film star. She was six years old! In the 1930s, her name on a movie subtitle assured a packed house. She inspired dolls, dresses, dishes even a drink (alcohol-free, of course). US President Franklin D. Roosevelt once famously said that “as long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right”. Unlike so many of todays child stars, Temple didnt end up with her name splashed across (四 处沾染) the headlines for bad behavior. Instead of getting her face on front pages or struggling with drugs and alcohol, Temple went on to a second career in diplomacy (外交), including presidential appointments as ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. By most accounts, she surprised a lot of skeptics with her grace, knowledge and eagerness to serve. In fact, her career in public service (20 years) was longer than her career in movies (19 years). The role she treasured most, however, was as wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. The world has lost a treasured Hollywood legend. But her movies will allow that little energetic lady to continue charming audiences for a very long time. 31. What is special bout Shirley Temple Black? A. She won a lot of awards in films. B. Shirley was the best actress in the Great Depression. C. Shirley brightened the dark days in the Great Depression. D. All the people in the US like the performance of Shirley 34. Which of the following statements is true about Shirley? A. Although addicted to drugs, she managed to win a career. B. She was successful both in career and family. C. But it was not a valuable book; and so, a poor man, who could read a little, bought it for only a few coins. The book wasnt very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin piece of vellum (牛皮纸) on which was written the secret of the “Touchstone”! The Touchstone was a small pebble (鹅卵石) that could turn any mon metal into pure gold. The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this: the real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles are cold. Hesitant for several days, he decided to have a try. So the man sold his few belongings, bought some simple supplies, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up ordinary pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold, he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this, but none of the stones he examined was the Touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. He picked up a pebble. It was cold, so he threw it into the sea. He picked up another. He threw it into the sea. The days stretched into weeks and the weeks into months. One day, however, about mid- afternoon, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He had formed such a strong habit of throwing each pebble into the sea that when the one he wanted came along he still threw it away. So it is with opportunity. Unless we are cautious, it is easy to fail to recognize an opportunity when it is in hand, and its just as easy to throw it away. 1. Why did the poor man buy the book? A. The same team that proved obesity and smoking spread in networks has shown that the more happy people you know, the more likely you are yourself to be happy. Moreover, getting connected to happy people improves a persons own happiness, they reported in the British Medical Journal. “What we are dealing with is an emotional interaction,” Nicholas Christakis, a professor of medical sociology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, said in a telephone interview. Christakis and James Fowler, a political scientist at the University of California, San Diego, have been using data from 4,700 children of volunteers in the Framingham Heart Study, a giant health study begun in Framingham, Massachusetts in 1948. They have been analyzing a series of facts from tracking sheets dating back to 1971, following births, marriages, death, and divorces. Volunteers also listed contact information for their closest friends, co-workers, and neighbors. Then, they assessed happiness using a simple, four-question test. “People are asked how often during the past week, one, I enjoyed life, two, I was happy, three, I felt hopeful about the future, and four, I felt that I was just as good as other people,” Fowler said. The 60 percent of people who scored highly on all four questions were rated as happy, while the rest were designated unhappy. People with the most social connections friends, spouses (配偶), neighbors, relatives were also the happiest, the data showed. “Each additional happy person makes you happier,” Christakis said. And happiness is more contagious than unhappiness, they discovered. “If a social contact is happy, it increases the likelihood that you are happy by 15 percent,” Fowler said. “A friend of a spouse or a sibling (兄弟姐妹), if they are happy, increases your chances by 10 percent,” he added. A happy third-degree friend a friend of a friend increases a persons chances of being happy by 6 percent. “But every extra unhappy friend increases the likelihood that youll be unhappy by 7 percent,” Fowler said. 41.
