The right to choose is central to everyone. Yet sometimes we make bad decisions that leave us unhappy or full of regret. Can science help? Most of us know little about the mental processes that lie behind our decisions. Luckily, what psychologists are finding may help us all make better choices. Here are some of their amazing discoveries to help you make up your mind.Consider your emotions. You might think that emotions are the enemy of decision-making, but in fact they are a part of it. Whenever you make up your mind, your brains emotional centre is active. University of Southern California scientist, Antonio Damasia, has studied people with damage to only the emotional parts of their brains, and found that they were unable to make basic choices about what to wear or eat. Damasia thinks this may be because our brains store emotional memories of past choice, which we use to help the present decision-making.However, making choices under the influence of an emotion can greatly affect the result. Take anger for example. A study by Nitika Garg of the University of Mississippi and other scientists found the angry shoppers were more likely to choose the first thing they were offered rather than considering other choices. It seems that anger can lead us to make quick decisions without much thinking. All emotions affect our thinking and motivation,so it may be best to avoid making important decisions under their influence. Yet strangely there is one emotion that seems to help us make good choices. The American researchers found that sad people took time to consider the various choices on offer, and ended up making the best choices. In fact many studies show that people who feel unhappy have the most reasonable view of the world.31. What does the underlined word “central” mean? A. in the middle B. easy to reach C. important D. having power 32. According to the text, what may help us make better decisions?A. To think about happy times.B. To make many decisions at a time.C. To stop feeling regretful about the past. D. To learn about the process of decision-making.34. Why are angry shoppers more likely to choose the first thing they are offered?A. They often forget their past choices.B. They make decisions without much thinking.C. They tend to save time when shopping. D. They are too angry to bargain.35. What do we learn from the text?A. Emotions are a part of decision-making.B. Sad people always make worse choices.C. No emotion seems to help us make good choices.D. Only sad feelings affect our thinking and motivation. CFor those of you who where born in the year of the pig, good luck and much success! This is your year. When talking to a Westerner, however, youve got to be a little careful when you talk about pigs. Chinese people view the pig as a smart and prosperous animal. Western ideas tend to be a little more negative. A pig in the West is seen as a dirty, lazy, and fat animal. If anyone ever called you a pig, you wouldnt be smiling. When a person doesnt like someone, sometimes he will call that person a pig. The physical sensation(感觉) of warmth encourages emotional warmth, while a cold drink in hand prevents you from making unwise decisionsthose are the practical lesson being drawn from recent research by psychologist John A. Bargh. Psychologists have known that one persons perception(感知) of anothers “warmth” is a powerful determiner in social relationships. Judging someone to be either “warm” or “cold” is a primary consideration, even trumping evidence that a “cold” person may be more capable. Much of this is rooted in very early childhood experiences, Bargh argues, when babies conceptual sense of the world around them is shaped by physical sensations, particularly warmth and coldness. Classic studies by Harry Harlow, published in 1958, showed monkeys preferred to stay close to a cloth “mother” rather than one made of wire, even when the wire “mother” carried a food bottle. Harlows work and later studies have led psychologists to stress the need for warm physical contact from caregivers to help young children grow into healthy adults with normal social skills. Feelings of “warmth” and “coldness” in social judgments appear to be universal. Although no worldwide study has been done, Bargh says that describing people as “warm” or “cold” is mon to many cultures, and studies have found those perceptions influence judgment in dozens of countries. To test the relationship between physical and psychological warmth, Bargh conducted an experiment which involved 41 college students. A research assistant who was unaware of the studys hypotheses(假设), handed the students either a hot cup of coffee, or a cold drink, to hold while the researcher filled out a short information form: The drink was then handed back. After that, the students were asked to rate the personality of “Person A” based on a particular description. Those who had briefly held the warm drink regarded Person A as warmer than those who had held the iced drink. “We are grounded in our physical experiences even when we think abstractly,” says Bargh. 41. According to Paragraph 1, a persons emotion may be affected by _. A. the visitors to his office B. the psychology lessons he has C. his physical feeling of coldness D. the things he has bought online 42. The author mentions Harlows experiment to show that _.
