In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasonsfor example, economic(经济的) reasonswhy they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed? In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响)its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏)the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的)and do not like change.Although we have to respect peoples feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move_things_forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice. 21What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?ASome of them are not attractive.BMost of them are too expensive to preserve.CThey are more pleasing than modern buildings.DThey have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area. 22Which of the following is true according to the author?AWe should reproduce the same old buildings.BBuildings should not dominate their surroundings.CSome old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.DNo one understands why people speak against new buildings. 从第三段的“It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in , but the same can be said of some old buildings too”可知答案。23By “move things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means “_.”Adestroy old buildingsBput things in a different placeCchoose new architectural stylesDrespect peoples feelings for historical buildings答案:C 词义猜测题。由下一句话“If we always reproduced what was there before , we would all still be living in caves(如果我们总是重复以前的建设,我们还一直生活在洞穴中)”可知,上一句话意为:改进建筑风格是建筑师和计划者的责任。故选C项。24What is the main purpose of the passage?ATo explain why people dislike change.BTo warn that we should end up living in caves.CTo admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.DTo argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas. BSome people make art with paint, and others use pencil or clay(粘土). But Italian artist Maurizio Savini prefers to use bright pink gumafter it has been chewed.Savini makes huge sculptures(雕塑) of bears and even people out of used chewing gum. Each sculpture requires thousands of pieces of gum.“I like to use chewing gum because it seemed to me a material that can be used in many ways pared with those used by the traditional arts such as painting,”Savini says. How does he do it? The process is a lot like working with clay. “I work the chewing gum when it is warm and shape it with a knife,”says Savini. Then, he puts a chemical onto each gum sculpture to make the gum stay in place. Savinis sticky art has been shown in cities like London, Paris, and Rome, where he lives today. Savini isnt the only artist to work with gum. His pink sculptures have inspired artists all over the world to get creative with the sticky matter. London artist Ben Wilson paints small paintings onto flat pieces of chewed gum he finds stuck to streets and sidewalks. In Canada, Jason Kronenwald uses different colored gum to make portraits of famous people.Kronenwald seldom chews gum himself. Instead, his friends help chew gum for him while hes working. “At times it can make me disgusted (令人作呕的),but I just pay attention to the colors I need and get the sculpture going,” he says.In America,Jamie Marraccinis art depends on color, so he tests different kinds of gum before using them. To find out what color the chewed gum will bee once hardened, he lets it age for up to six months.“Ive created 30 works totaling more than 35,000 pieces of gum,” says Marraccini. Thats a lot of gum!So think twice the next time you throw away a wad of gum. Maybe what seems like trash could actually be the beginning of a great piece of art. 25The gum Savini used to make art is _.A. expensive B. secondhandC. hard D. tasteless答案:B细节判断题。根据第二段的“Savini makes huge sculptures of bears and even people out of used chewing gum.” 26Who made other artists begin to work with chewing gum?A. Famous arts. B. Strange artists.C. Sticky sculptures. D. Chewing gum. CPhyllis Pearsall was born in Britain in 1907. She stayed there until she left school. Then, she travelled around France. She earned money by painting peoples pictures and writing for a newspaper in Paris. She married an artist and went with him to paint in Spain. In the 1930s, she left Spain and returned to London. She worked for her fathers pany and made maps of the world. She thought there was a need for new street maps of London and started working on a book of maps. She collected a lot of information. She walked along every street in London and wrote down the important buildings and even the house numbers. She kept the information about the streets on cards in small boxes. One day a box with cards of all the streets beginning with “Tr” fell out of her window. She found most of her cards, but some landed on the top of a bus and she never saw those cards again. When she sent everything to the painter, someone asked her, “Why isnt Trafalgar Square in your book?” It was because she had lost the card! She called her book A to Z. The first A to Z was in the shops in 1936 and sold very well. Now it is a popular book of London street maps. Besides the street names, it shows important buildings, government offices, museums, theaters and schools; parks and public gardens; sports facilities; train and underground stations.Later Phyllis Pearsall returned to the streets of London to paint pictures of many of the citys famous buildings.29According to the passage, there wasnt Trafalgar Square in A to Z because _.APhyllis forgot to write itBthe cards beginning with “Tr” were lostCit wasnt importantDit wasnt a place in London答案:B由第二段倒数第五、六句可知,原因在于以Tr开头的卡片丢了。30How did Phyllis get to know about roads so well?ABy getting firsthand information.BBy making cards for local people.CBy falling out of her window.DBy taking pictures. 31What is an A to Z?AIts a book of London street maps.BIts a book of paintings.CIts a map of theaters.DIts a map of buildings. DAmmie Reddick from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, was only 18 months old when she had the accident that had scarred (给留下疤痕)her for life. The curious child reached up to grab the wire of a hot kettle in the family kitchen and poured boiling water over her tiny infant frame. Her mother Ruby turned round and, seeing Ammie horribly burned, called an ambulance which rushed her daughter to a nearby hospital. Twenty percent of Ammies body had been burned and all of her burns were thirddegree. There, using tissue taken from unburned areas of Ammies body, doctors performed plex skin transplants to close her wounds and control her injuries, an operation that took about six hours. Over the next 16 years, Ammie underwent twelve more operations to repair her body. When she started school at Maxwelton Primary at age four, other pupils made cruel ments or simply wouldnt play with her. “I was the only burned child in the street, the class and the school,” she recalled, “some children refused to bee friends because of that.”Today, aged 17, Ammie can only ever remember being a burned person with scars; pain is a permanent part of her body. She still has to have two further skin transplants. Yet she is a confident, outgoing teenager who offers inspiration and hope to other young burns victims. She is a member of the Scottish Burned Childrens Club, a charity set up last year. This month, Ammie will be joining the younger children at the Graffham Water Center in Cambridgeshire for the charitys first summer camp. “Ill show them how to get rid of unkind stares from others,” she says. Ammie loves wearing fashionable sleeveless tops, and she plans to show the youngsters at the summer camp that they can too. “I do not go to great lengths to hide my burns scars,” she says, “I gave up wondering how other people would react years ago.” 32How many operations has Ammie already had?ATwelve.B.Thirteen.CFourteen.
