Many people slowed down their paces and put some money into the hat before him.The next day, when the young artist came to the gate of the subway station, different than the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it on the ground. He then adjusted the violin and began playing. It seemed more pleasant to listen to.Before long, the young violinist was surrounded with people all attracted by the words on that paper. It said, “A gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please e to claim it soon.”It caused a great excitement. After about half an hour, a middleaged man hurried there and rushed through the crowd to the violinist and grabbed his shoulders and said, “Its you. You did e here. I knew that youre an honest man and would certainly e here.”The violinist asked calmly, “Are you Mr. George Sang?”The man nodded. “Did you lose something?”“Lottery.” The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sangs name was seen. George seized the lottery ticket and kissed it.The story turned out to be this: George Sang bought a lottery ticket with which he won a prize of $500,000. When he passed by the violinist, he felt the music so wonderful that he put 50 dollars in the hat. However the lottery ticket was also thrown in. The violinist studied at an Arts College and had planned fly that morning to attend advanced studies in Vienna. However when he was cleaning up he found the lottery ticket. Thinking that the owner would return to look for it, he cancelled the flight.Someone asked him: “You needed to pay the tuition and had to play the violin to make the money. Why didnt you take the lottery ticket?”He said, “Although I dont have much money, I live happily; but if I lose honesty I wont be happy ever since.”Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. Americans hold both the fork and the knife in their right hands throughout the meal, so they continually change their forks to the left hand when they have to cut their meat. It seems to be funny for the Europeans to see Americans busy changing their dinner sets, making a lot of noises. A few explanations for this American style are as follows:(1) Americans are practical and efficient. Since most of us are right-handed, it is reasonable to keep our working tools at all times in the right hand that can use them most efficiently.(2) Americans, the master of the New World are rebels(叛逆者).They use the zigzag method to break the rules in the Old World and in this way they are thumbing their nose at Mother England. Americans are a restless kind. They do not like to sit in one spot for very long when dining.(3) Forced to do so, they respond by “playing” with the silver.Whatever the reason for the practice, it is now certainly as American as apple pie. Europeans recognize this and are quick to attack it as evidence of American innocence(无知)of form. Arguments against the zigzag method rest not only on grounds of efficiency but also on those of tradition. In Old World dining, the knife is held in the right hand continually because it can serve as an instant defense against the uninvited intruders(入侵者).However, such alertness(警觉) is out of place in the New World, as every American believes that this is the home of the brave. Americans juggle their silverware, perhaps, to show that they are not afraid and that one of them holding a fork is worth any number of them holding blades(刀).31. Americans use _ to hold their fork to pick up the salad.A. the right hand B. the left hand C. both hands D. either of the two hands32. As the masters of the New World, Americans use a different cutting method from that in the Old World to _.A. show their independence of Mother EnglandB. show their disrespect to Mother EnglandC. add a new tradition to those in Mother EnglandD. show off their creativeness to Mother England33. In the last sentence, the word “juggle” probably means _.A. hold B. play with C. pick up D. lay down34. Also in the last sentence, the two “them” refer to _.A. Americans B. Europeans and Americans separatelyC. Americans and Europeans separately D. Europeans 35. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. European people hold the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right hand.B. The zigzag eating method is related to American characteristics.C. The zigzag eating method has bee an American feature.D. European people will use the American method because of its efficiency.C From bankers to factory staff, employees in the West face a cold prospect of losing their jobs as a global recession(衰退) starts to bite. For colleagues in the East, the pain is more likely to e through a pay cut.Human resource experts say cultural differences explain why Asian panies try harder to preserve jobs in difficult times, which will prevent unemployment and may help Asian economies survive at a time of slowing exports. The East Asian attitude may also make it easier for panies to recover quickly from the economic downturn since they will not need to rehire or train new staff, but build up a more loyal and devoted group.“In the Confucian mindset(儒家思想), the right thing to do is to share the burden, which is the sense of collective(集体的) responsibility. While in the West, its more about individual survival,” said Michael Benoliel, associate professor of organizational behavior at Singapore Management University (SMU).In contrast, local Western panies from General Motors to Goldman Sachs plan to lay off workers by the thousands, but at the Asian units of Western multinationals or western units of Asian groups, job cuts will probably be less severe.Japans jobless rate was 4 percent in September, up from 3.8 percent in January, while Hong Kongs was flat at 3.4 percent. But US unemployment is expected to have jumped to 6.3 percent last month from below 5 percent in January.Experts say that while there are noticeable differences in labor practices in East and West, the gap will narrow as more firms bee more multinational and petition forces firms to adopt the best practices of rivals from abroad.36. The underlined word “prospect” in the first paragraph most probably means _.Aweather Bscene Cfuture Dplace37. pared with job cuts, pay cuts can bring the following benefits EXCEPT that _.Aits helpful to the economy recoveryBit costs the pany less money to survive Cit will keep the experienced and skilled workersDit can form a team working harder and more loyally38. According to Michael Benoliel, the Confucian mindset focuses on _.Ahuman rights Bsharing responsibilityCpersonal profits Dindividual survival39. In which pany can we infer the job cuts will be probably the most severe? AA local American group.BA small Japanese pany.CA German branch of a Korean multinational.DA Hong Kongs unit of a French pany.40. The passage mainly tells us _.Athe difficulties all the panies around the world will meet with todayBthe cultural differences between Eastern and Western world at presentCthe ways to cut down the cost of the panies in economic downturnDthe different labor solutions of Asian and Western in global recessionD Are you having difficulty falling asleep? Try drinking a glass of warm milk. If that doesnt work, listen to some soft, beautiful music. Still no luck ? Try thinking about sheep jumping over a fence. If you are still awake, take a sleeping pill. But people who take pills often bee dependent on the drugs. So you lie awake knowing that the new workday will soon arrive. If you have been in such condition for at least one month, you may have primary insomnia (失眠症). A new study has found that you might fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep longer if you try cerebral hypothermia. It is not a plex medical process. It just means cooling down your brain. Eric Nofzinger and Daniel Buysse from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School led the study. They examined twelve people who had sleeping problems. Twelve others had no sleep problems. Each of them wore a soft plastic cap on their head at bedtime. The caps had tubes inside filled with water. The researchers moved the water through the tubes and then changed the temperature of the water. Other studies showed that people who had sleeping problems often had more chemical reactions in the front of their brain. The researchers thought cooling down the brain might help. On the first two nights of testing, the patients wore caps with no water. On the next two nights, the caps were worn, but the water was not cooled. Then the researchers cooled the water a little for another two nights. On the final two nights of the study, the temperature of the water was made much cooler. The researchers found that the water caps didnt help the patients until the temperature was about 140C. Most of the patients fell asleep faster and slept better when the coolest water was moving around their head. Dr. Nofzinger and Dr. Buysse noted that this was only the beginning of the brain temperature study. But they believed they had discovered something important that needed more research.41. The first paragraph is written to A. explain how serious insomnia is B. bring forward the topic of the passageC. tell us the causes of sleeping problems D. tell us the danger of having sleeping problems42. From the passage we know that cerebral hypothermia is actually _ A. a plex medical process B. a psychological treatmentC. a simple physical treatment D. a difficult scientific theory43. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The cause of the study. B. The function of the caps.C. Some details of the study. D. Peoples reactions to the study.45.
