Health Is Better Than WealthC. Something Is Better Than Nothing D. Better Late Than Never B Each child has his individual pattern of social, as well as physical, development. Some of it depends on his home life and his relationships with the people who love him. Children in large families learn how to get along with others through normal brother- sister play and tussles (打斗). An only child, on the other hand, may have to learn his lessons in social living through hard experiences on the playground or in the classroom. Twins who always have one another to lean on may be slow in responding to others because they do not need anyone else. A child who is constantly scolded and made to feel he does everything wrong may have a difficult time developing socially. He may be so afraid of displeasing the adults around him that he keeps to himself (where he cant get into trouble)or he may take the opposite route and go out of his way to create trouble. Like the deserted child, he too may return to infantile (幼稚的)pleasures, developing habits that will satisfy him, but create barriers toward social contact.40. Which of the following may have effect on childrens pattern of social development? A. Age B. Education C. Home life D. Gender(性别)41. Which of the following is implied by the passage? A. All children developed in the same ways.B. Deserted children often exhibit quicker social development.C. Too much scolding of children may make their social development difficult.D. Children who are constantly scolded may learn to get along with others quickly.42. We can infer from the passage that_. A. continual scolding is not harmful to the childB. continual scolding has no effect on obeying ordersC. continual scolding has no effect on physical developmentD. continual scolding holds back healthy social development43. Where does the passage say the only child learns his social lessons? A. Home and playground B. Classroom and playgroundC. School and home D. All of the aboveC According to the US government, wind farms off the Pacific coast could produce 900 gig watts of electricity every year. Unfortunately, the water there is far too deep for even the tallest windmills (see picture) to touch bottom. An experiment under way off the coast of Norway, however, could help put them anywhere. The project, called Hywind, is the worlds first large-scale deepwater wind turbine (涡轮发电机). Although it uses a fairly standard 152-ton, 2.3-megawatt turbine, Hywind represents totally new technology. The turbine will be fixed 213 feet above the water on a floating spar(see picture),a technology Hywinds creator, the Norwegian pany StatoilHydro, has developed recently. The steel spar, which is filled with stones and goes 328 feet below the sea surface, will be tied to the ocean floor by three cables (缆索); these will keep the spar stable and prevent the turbine from moving up and down in the waves. Hywinds stability in the cold and rough sea would prove that even the deepest corners of the ocean are suitable for wind power. If all goes according to plan, the turbine will start producing electricity six miles off the coast of southwestern Norway as early as September. To produce electricity on a large scale, a mercial wind farm will have to use bigger turbines than Hywind does, but its difficult enough to balance such a large turbine so high on a floating spar in the middle of the ocean. To make that turbine heavier, the whole spars to design a new kind of wind turbine, one whose gearbox (变速箱) sits at sea level rather than behind the blades (see picture ).Hywind is a test run, but the benefits for perfecting floating wind-farm technology could be extremely large. Out at sea, the wind is often stronger and steadier than close to shore, where all existing offshore windmills are planted. Deep-sea farms are invisible from land, which helps overe the windmill-as-eyesore objection. If the technology catches on (bees popular), it will open up vast areas of the planets surface to one of the best low-carbon power resources available.44. The Hywind project uses totally new technology to ensure the stability of _.A. the spar which is floating in deep-sea water B. the cables which tie the spar to the ocean floorC. the blades driven by strong and steady sea wind D. the stones filled in the spar below the sea surface45. To balance a bigger turbine high on a flatting spar, a new type of turbine is to be designed with its gearbox sitting _.A. on the sea floor B. on the spar top C. behind the blades D. at sea level 46. Wide applications of deepwater wind power technology can _. A. make financial profits by producing more turbinesB. settle the arguments about environmental problemsC. explore low-carbon power resources available at sea D. solve the technical problems of deepwater windmillsD When Mary Moore began her high school in 1951, her mother told her, Be sure and take a typing course so when this show business thing doesnt work out, youll have something to rely on. Mary responded in typical teenage fashion. From that moment on, the very thing I never thought about doing was taking a typing course, she recalls. The show business thing worked out, of course. In her career, Mary won many awards. Only recently, when she began to write Growing Up Again, did she regret ignoring her mom, I dont know how to use a puter, she admits. Unlike her 1995 autobiography, After All, her second book is less about life as an award-winning actress and more about living with diabetes (糖尿病). All the money from the book is intended for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization she serves as international chairman. I felt there was a need for a book like this, she says. I didnt want to lecture, but I wanted other diabetics to know that things get better when were self-controlled and do our part in managing the disease. But she hasnt always practiced what she teaches. In her book, she describes that awful day, almost 40 years ago, when she received two pieces of life-changing news. First, she had lost the baby she was carrying, and second, tests showed that she had diabetes. In a childlike act, she left the hospital and treated herself to a box of doughnuts (甜甜圈). Years would pass before she realized she had to grow up -again-and take control of her diabetes, not let it control her. Only then did she kick her three-pack-a-day cigarette habit, overe her addiction to alcohol, and begin to follow a balanced diet. Although her disease has affected her eyesight and forced her to the sidelines of the dance floor, she refuses to fall into self-pity. Everybody on earth can ask, why me? about something or other, she insists. It doesnt do any good. No one is immune (免疫的) to heartache, pain, and disappointments. Sometimes we can make things better by helping others. Ive e to realize the importance of that as Ive grown up this second time. I want to speak out and be as helpful as I can be.47. Why did Mary feel regretful? A. She didnt achieve her ambition. B. She didnt take care of her mother. C. She didnt plete her high school. D. She didnt follow her mothers advice. 48. We can know that before 1995 Mary .A. had two books published B. received many career awards C. knew how to use a puter D. supported the JDRF by writing 49. Marys second book Growing Up Again is mainly about her .A. successful show business B. living with diabetesC. service for an organization D. remembrance of her mother 50. When Mary received the life-changing news, she . A. lost control of herself B. began a balanced diet C. had to get a treatment D. behaved in an adult way 51. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. Mary feels pity for herself. B. Mary has recovered from her disease. C. Mary wants to help others as much as possible. D. Mary determines to go back to the dance floor. E Most people who are thought of as being successful often owe their success to people in their lives that they consider to be a coach. In fact, the most successful people on the planet have their own personal coach. The reason for this is simple. While friends, family and colleagues can be wonderful supporters, they often provide guidance to you based on their own purpose. Their purpose is often a well meaning one, but the bottom line is: its “their purpose. While their wants for you may sometimes agree with your own life desires and goals, it is difficult for them to be pletely unbiased (公正的) in actions. None of us can be truly “unbiased” in the ways we interact (相互作用) with those closest to us because our lives are so directly intertwined with one another. Thats where a personal coach es in The purpose of a personal coach is to provide you with a professional who is skilled at unbiased listening and whole-hearted helping. Your coach expertly assists you in creating a strong personal foundation that allows you to dream big and achieve those dreams about what you can or cannot acplish. A coach is your personal trainer in life. A coach helps you discover your undeveloped potential and works with you to develop every aspect of your personal greatness. With the right coach you cant
