That is, the sounds made by a killer whale in one part of the ocean may be very different from the sounds of a killer whale from another area in the sea ,just as people from the southern United States sound different from New Englanders. David Bain studies the underwater sounds of two killer whales at Marine World, in Vallejo, California. Despite their different dialects he says the mammals learned to municate with one another by eventually learning to make each others sounds. The change of tones also colors meaning, just as it does with people.Researcher Bain says,“Theres a lot of information in the tone of voice. You can get a sense of whether theyre being sarcastic or not. Yes, they do have a tone of voice.” Researchers hesitate to call the sounds language, but the sounds clearly do help whales municate with other whales and other mammals may even be familiar with it. The ability of whales and dolphins to imitate sounds helps develop something of a crossspecies language. When the dolphin Bayou was separated from the Orca, Yaka, Bayou began uttering Orcalike sounds, presumably to get the whales attention. Researchers here say dolphins are such good imitators, one even learned to let out a loud and tough cry like a bird.Brenda McCowan tries to connect dolphin behavior with their whistlelike sounds. By recording and analyzing the sound patterns, shes also e up with what looks like an extensive vocabulary. She says, “We found, using a statistical technique that produced about 102 whistle types, overall, their whistle types consist of that.” But she is still not sure what any of it means,“we just dont know yet and were slowly trying to pull apart the pieces to find out how plex it is.” 21How do the two killer whales talk with each other?ABy learning to make each others sounds.BBy speaking their own different dialects.CBy saying their own languages in the sea.DBy studying the underwater sounds of them. A。22The underlined word“that” in the passage means _.AvocabularyBtypeCwhistleDtechnique答案:A词义猜测题。 A。23According to Brenda McCowan, it can be inferred that _.Awhales and dolphins are able to imitate each others soundsBthe meaning of the whistles still needs to be researched furtherCshe has e up with about 102 types of soundsDthe structures of dolphins and whales are not so simple答案:B推理判断题。 But she is still not sure what any of it means可知,她还是不确定所含意义是什么,所以还需要进一步的研究,故答案选B。B(xx北京卷)The Boy Made It!One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area.Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didnt have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.Nicholas had no idea where he was.He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV.It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed out.The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow.If he didnt, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.Using his skis,Nicholas built a snow cave.He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket,to stay as warm as he could.By that evening,Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldnt lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last,Nicholas did the only thing he couldhe huddled(蜷缩)in his cave and slept. The next day,Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldnt find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter,he could die that night. On Tuesday,Nicholas went out again to find help.He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow.Nicholas was saved.Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV.He had often watched Grylls survival show Man vs. Wild.Thats where he learned the tips that saved his life.In each episode(一期节目)of Man vs. Wild,Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out. When Grylls heard about Nicholas amazing deeds,he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive. 24What happened to Nicholas one Sunday afternoon?AHe got lost.BHe broke his skis.CHe hurt his eyes.DHe caught a cold. 根据第一段第四句,“Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone!” A。25How did Nicholas keep himself warm?AHe found a shelter.BHe lighted some branches.CHe kept on skiing.DHe built a snow cave. Using his skis.Nicholas built a snow cave.He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket,to stay as warm as he could. D。26On Tuesday,Nicholas_.Areturned to his shelter safelyBwas saved by a searcherCgot stuck in the snowDstayed where he was答案:B细节理解题。 He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. B。27Nicholas left Grylls a very deep impression because he_.Adid the right things in the dangerous situationBwatched Grylls TV program regularlyCcreated some tips for survivalDwas very hardworking答案:A推理判断题。根据最后一段.he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive. A。CTwenty volunteers were immunized in the United States. Scientists at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) described the resultsas“promising”. The research is published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). None of those immunized suffered major sideeffects and all produced antibodies.Dr Anthony Fauci of the NIH told the BBC,“On safety and on the ability to produce a proper immune response we can call this test an unqualified success, even though it was an early Phase One test.”The volunteers were divided into two groups, receiving either a low or high dose. The antibody response was stronger among those receiving the higher dose. The researchers found that seven of the high dose and two of the low dose volunteers produced Tcell immune responses, which may be important in protection against Ebola viruses. The vaccine uses a chimpanzee cold virus which has been genetically engineered to carry a noninfectious Ebola protein on its surface. There are four tests under way of this experimental vaccine. The US vaccine is aimed at giving protection against the Sudan and Zaire strains of Ebola. It is the latter which is responsible for the current outbreak. Tests of a monovalent vaccineagainst the Zaire strainare also under way in Oxford, Mali and Switzerland. If these also give positive results then the monovalent vaccine will be offered to thousands of health workers in West Africa.Dr Fauci said,“It will be this large Phase Two/Three test in West Africa which will show whether the vaccine works and is really safe.” He added, “If the outbreak is still going on six months from now and the vaccine at that point is shown to be effective, it could have a very positive effect on the current epidemic.”But he said the longterm aim was to produce a vaccine which would protect against future outbreaks. If the vaccine does work, it is unclear how long the protection would last. 28The underlined word “promising” in the first paragraph means _.AhopefulBfearfulCtearful Dthankful答案:A词义猜测题。 A。29According to the experiment, what may play an important role in protection against Ebola viruses?AThe higher dose.BThe lower dose.CPhase One test.DTcell immune responses. 根据题干“什么在抗击埃博拉病毒中可能起着重要作用”和文章第三段中which may be important in protection against Ebola viruses可知,答案为D。30Where are the tests mainly being carried out according to the passage?AOxford, Mali, Zaire and Switzerland.BThe US, Oxford, Mali and Switzerland.CSudan, Mali, West Africa, America.DZaire,Switzerland, the US and Oxford. Tests of a monovalent vaccine. are also under way in Oxford, Mali and Switzerland和该段首句The US vaccine is aimed at giving protection. B。31What type of writing is the article likely to be?AA medicine report. BA science report.CA news report.DA health report. Dr Anthony Fauci of the NIH told the BBC可知,该篇文章属于一篇新闻报道,故答案选C。 C。DMost teachers use silencing methods, such as flicking the lights, ringing a call bell, raising two fingers, saying “Attention, class,” or using Harry Wongs Give Me 5a mand for students to: 1.Focus their eyes on the speaker 2.Be quiet 3.Be still 4. Empty their hands 5.Listen. There is also the “three fingers” form, which stands for stop, look, and listen. Fortunately ,none of these involve medical jokes. Lesser known techniques are described below and listed by grade bands:How to Quiet Kindergarten and Early Elementary School ChildrenA novelty successfully catches young students attention, such as the sound of a wind bell or rain stick. Beth,in Cornerstone for Teachers, tells her students, “Pop a marshmallow in.” Next she puffs up her cheeks, and the kids followsuit. Its hard to speak with an imaginary marshmallow filling your mouth.Late Elementary and Middle Grade Attention Getters Back when I taught middle school students, I would announce,“Silent 20,” as a way to end an activity. If students returned to their seats and were pletely quiet in 20 seconds, I advanced them one space on a giant copy of Game of Life.Quieting High School StudentsSometimes, noisy high school classrooms need a little longer to ply. In An ELT Notebook article, Rob Johnson advises that teachers write the following instructions in bold letters on the chalkboard: If you wish to continue talking during my lesson, I will have to take time off you at break. By the time Ive written the title on the board you need to be sitting in silence.
